East Lothian is a golfers paradise. Several renowned Links courses are within 15 minutes drive - Dunbar and Muirfield - both championship standard. Archerfield and Craigielaw are recent high quality developments. North Berwick, Musselburgh and Gullane are well renowned courses. Whitekirk is quality inland course.

SURFING:

Recently the area has become a focus for this sport in the South East of Scotland. there are several agencies providing tuition and equipment hire. The clean waters and beaches are one of the reasons this sport is being so successful in the area.

The immediate area is often referred to as 'Sunny Dunny' due to the DUNBAR area repeatedly being one of the sunniest localities in Scotland as per Met Office records.

OTHER INTERESTING THINGS TO DO: MUSEUM:

The SCOTTISH MUSEUM OF FLIGHT, is only a 10 minute drive. Many attractions including CONCORDE are on display. It's worth visiting East Fortune Sunday Market if you do go to the Museum of Flight - it's next door, and is the one of the largest markets in the Lothians - almost everything is on sale here!!

4X4 DRIVING:

More adventure can be had at the local 4X4 Driving School - which is one of the top traing schools in the UK. Quad bikes and 4x4 Driving Instruction is available, as are various corporate/family type days out.

DIVING:

Sub Aqua Diving - St Abbs, about 15 mins drive, is one of the most popular venues for this activity sport and many attractions for divers to explore.

Walking + General Interests: The cottage is only a short drive from the Eastern end of the Southern Upland Way which crosses Scotland from St Abbs head through the Border counties to the west coast.

The Lammermuirs border East Lothian, and provide the source for the countys water supply. They are expansive and very wild with wide open spaces and remote areas of heather and conifer. This area is completely different from the fertile coastal plains.

Barnyards Cottage, is located in the village of SPOTT. The local Glen - Spott Glen is only 2 minutes walk from the cottage. This glen has Kestrels, Herons, Buzzards and Woodpecker, together with Pheasant, Owl and Partridge.

Animals present include, Deer, Badger, Otter and Fox. Walk and enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

Additionally, Woodhall Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve is only 1 mile away and is an area of interest and scenic beauty.

Other interesting visits in the locality include, Scottish Museum of Flight - which has CONCORDE and many other attractions.

Top location, excellent equipment, perfect owner

With four people we have spent 5 days around new years day (2007/2008) at this excellently-maintained, clean and silent place in Spott, a small village near Dunbar which is approx. 35-45 car minutes away from Edinburgh (approx. 20 min. by train). The appartment in this classic cottage is newly renovated and offers perfect modern equipment (e.g. kitchen & bath, TV, radio, microwave, washing machine, toaster, cooking facility, oven, water heater, etc.) combined with a lovely and romantic outfit (e.g. log fire, thick/warm carpets, cute-looking kitchen - which is big and allows for eating in this room with at least four people). Two cute bed rooms are located on the first floor, water is hot at all times over the day even when four people take longer showers and the central heater is working reliably and quickly (and is independent of the log fire). The owner is very helpful in all respects, gives a lot of tips where to go and what to do, suggests nice restaurants in the region nearby and even got some tickets from eBay for us for the central Edinburgh new years eve celebration which were officially sold out even before we had arrived. The sea is reachable within a few minutes by car offering a lot of leisure activities such as surfing (better conditions compared to French Atlantic coast), sailing and even diving. There are several sea-view golfing parks around and a few minutes drive towards the hills leaves you in the middle of nowhere, forest around, nice views from the top of the hills towards the sea and country-side, no civilization noise and all kinds of wild animals. We would certainly come back to this place and can only warmly recommend this place to anybody who likes to stay in Scotland for a while.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for this extremely positive review. If all guests treat the cottage with similar care then I will be very well pleased. The cottage was treated with care and respect. The guests recognised the special qualities that the cottage has in terms of character and in terms of location. The aspect of quietness and tranquility is perhaps priceless, and the cottage has these aspects.
The guests suggested a couple of improvements - a coffee machine, just bought one! and internet access. I'm working on the internet one - there are line problems, but a solution is possible - although it may only be WiFi.
For any guests who have previuosly stayed, a 10% minimum reduction will apply, additionally, anyone booking via a referral from a former guest will also receive a similar discount.

Excellent cottage, almost like coming home!

Like last time, we had a wonderful time. The holiday starts with a warm welcome by Douglas and Catherine. The cottage is warm and cosy and you will feel at home immediately. Everything is there. A well equipped kitchen, a lovely and spacious bathroom and two bedrooms. We were very lucky with the weather (again!) and spent hours in the garden. We spent many lazy hours on the garden furniture which is also available in the shed. A real bonus!
The environment is great. Lots of green and in May the yellow fields are wonderful. We are really looking forward to our stay in May 2014 again. It is a pity that we can't come over sooner, but we have something to look forward too in 2014! Thanks again and see you next year.

Wonderful week here!

We are packing to drive north tomorrow, but want to thank our landlords for a wonderful week in this beautiful cottage! Everything was organized very well. We had a bottle of wine and some bread and other goodies waiting for us when we arrived. The house is very well kept, it's been a true pleasure to be here. We ended up using the sofabed downstairs, even if there're only four of us, since our teenage boys found the twinbed upstairs a bit small for them to share. But that was fine, since there was an extra bed to use easily.

We are sorry to have to leave these gorgeous rooms soon, as we will have to let some other lucky ones come here! We'll be talking about this place to our friends back in Finland!

Cottage in East Lothian Review

There were 4 of us, 2 Danish and 2 from the US. The cottage was located about 30 minutes from Edinburg in the country. It was furnished very nicely - 2 bedrooms ample for us and a large bathroom. The living room had a couple of couches and chairs and many pamphlets on sights and a nice tv. The kitchen was modern and we ate breakfast there every day and several evening we cooked meals as there is a large grocery store, ADA, a branch of Walmart, about 5 minutes from the cottage. The country side is beautiful, green and filled with history. We were treated to an orientation drive the second day we were there and given suggestions as to what to see while visiting. Dunbar has several very nice restaurants which were recommended. You couldn't ask for better landlords, as they live nearby and answered any questions we had. I'd highly recommend the cottage and hope to go back again.

It sure was a long way to travel - United States to Spott, and they were not disappointed!!!
I believe them when they say that they want to return - everyone seems to come back for 2nd and 3rd visits. cant explain it but the cottage has something special.
A very nice couple with a very positive attitude - thaey want to explore and visit and to enjoy, and they do!!

Stunning cottage, lovely atmosphere

We arrived on a Friday and felt welcome immediately. There was a welcome package (which I enjoyed a lot) and the house was warm en comfortable. Plenty of towels and kitchen linen, everything you could wish for was available. Not only the house was great, the garden was enclosed and full with flowers. We enjoyed many days sunbathing in the garden on the comfortable chairs with cushions (again: everything was there!).

Douglas and Catherine, the owners of the cottage are a stone's throw away and are so friendly. I really appreciate all they have done for us. Thanks again for everything!

Lots to do in the area like birdwatching, walking, cycling (a bit hilly) or dining in one of the restaurants nearby.

We will be back next year. Unfortunately we can not come earlier than May 2013, but I would have loved to come back earlier! I bet the cottage and area is lovely in all seasons.

Dunbar - an Open Championship qualifying course, which also holds the Seniors and Scottish Boys Championship is less than 5 minutes away.

There are many famous Links courses that await you - Gullane, North Berwick and Musselburgh are all easily reached. Many new high quality golf developments have recently taken place - some are Craigielaw, Archerfield and Whitekirk.

Separately, Dunbar Winterfield - a links course, is a very popular, and represents good value for money.

East Lothian is an area that is simply a Golfing Paradise! No course in the county is more than a 20 minute drive!

St Andrews - and the world famous OLD COURSE is about 90 minutes drive.

Kitchen is fully equipped - supplied with all the basics - cleaning materials, washing up goods, tinfoil, cling film etc + welcome start pack of basic provisions/groceries. Seating for 4/6 (extending table). The floor covering is vinyl . The kitchen is a comfortable day room for sitting in. The upstairs gallery also provides an area to sit and read in.
