Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Culebra - Casa SuMarco

2 BRs, 1 bath, sleeps 4, full kitchen, in/outdoor showers, wash machine, carport

Enjoy wide-open water views and sip a cool drink on Casa SuMarco's huge wrap-around deck overlooking one of the most beautiful bays in the entire Caribbean. Only a few hundred feet from the water's edge and cooled by tropical breezes, this comfortable 2-bedroom house sleeps up to 4 people, perfect for a family or couples. Enjoy the privacy of having your own house and landscaped grounds in a small, safe and friendly neighborhood on the bay.

Both bedrooms are air-conditioned, all other rooms have ceiling fans. Prepare your own meals in the fully equipped kitchen or sample island cooking at Culebra's unique variety of restaurants. Casa SuMarco has a washing machine, dvd/flat screen tv with a varied movie library, cd/ipod stereo, outdoor gas grill, broadband internet access with wifi & ethernet, indoor & outdoor showers. Your private parking area is right at the front gate in our own outdoor car-port. The spacious grounds have flowering shrubs and palm trees. A perfect island getaway.

Our secret island paradise. Shhh, don't tell . . .: Culebra is among the 'Best Secret Islands on Earth' (Travel & Leisure), has one of the '6 Caribbean Beaches to See Before You Die' (New York Times), and nearby Flamenco Beach is 'One of the Top 10 in the World' (Travel Channel). Flamenco Beach is just 6 minutes from Casa SuMarco by car or scooter. Its central location on the island is convenient to all restaurants, shops, town, ferry and airport. A few friendly watering holes in town have live music or karaoke on some nights. Restaurants range from simple island cooking to elegant gourmet dining. Small local markets and unique island gift shops provide for all your needs. A weekly open-air produce market offers a cornucopian array of fresh fruit & vegetables.

All you need are flipflops and sunblock: Nature is the local attraction on Culebra. Endless white sandy beaches dot the island. Many are within a few minutes' ride from the house. Deserted beaches, beautiful reefs, fabulous snorkeling and diving. No malls, resorts or golf courses. No passport or fancy clothes required. English is spoken everywhere. To get the most from your visit, renting a car will give you the best mobility and opportunity to explore and experience all aspects of the island.

Kick back, relax: Come for the simplicity and beauty. Enjoy snorkeling the colorful reefs, scuba diving, nature walks, photography, biking, kayaking, fishing and boating. Hiking, observing hawksbill or leatherback turtles nesting and hatching in spring and birdwatching in the extensive Culebra Wildlife Refuge are favorite activities for nature lovers.

Bring your sunblock, camera, a good book . . . and relax.

About Susan Lusk

My husband and I retired from book publishing in New York, where we still live most of the year. We love the slower pace, simplicity, and natural beauty of Culebra — it's the perfect antidote to city life.

Susan Lusk purchased this house in 2004

Why Susan Lusk chose Culebra

We visited a few different islands in the Caribbean and whenever we asked about Culebra, we got the same answer: 'Oh no, you don't want to go to Culebra — there's nothing there.' That was exactly what we were looking for and it was perfect! Fifteen years later, it still is.

What makes this house unique

Simplicity of lifestyle, genuinely nice people, beautiful surroundings, tropical weather.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a great stay in your house. The views were beautiful and everything was very comfortable. As a professional in a technical field I cannot but compliment you on how well you have organized the house and labeled everything and seemingly anticipated the guests questions of where stuff is and how it works. We enjoyed a profound sense of relaxation and a refusal to be bothered with anything but the basics of swimming, sunning, eating, snorkeling, body surfing and doing nothing.

If we have friends that want to visit Culebra based on our glowing reviews, we will certainly recommend your place. Thank you again for making our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

Sweet is an understatement!

  • 5 of 5

The first thing we noticed when we walked into Casa SuMarco was how clean, comfortable and organized it was. The second thing we noticed was the view (more on that in a minute). The third thing we noticed was that the house is furnished with love and genuine thoughtfulness for those who rent it. Everything was easy and natural to find, and if it wasn't, there was a little sign or note for a hidden light, or help with electronics. Susan has thought of everything.

The view, as everyone else has commented, is nothing short of stunning, and the breezes on the wrap around deck were incredibly welcome after a day at the many beaches. At the house, we read, watched movies, cooked great dinners (everything you need is there except the food), and lounged around doing absolutely nothing at all! LOVED IT! I can also see a family with children really enjoying the house, as it is private, comfortable, relaxed and lived in.

Having a car, we tooled around the island quite a bit, and were always thrilled to come back to the house. We spend most of our days on Tamarindo beach (get there early to get a shady spot) and Zoni beach (WOW! Just WOW) where there were few people and little nooks of shade as you walk down from the lot. We ate at Susie's one night and highly recommend it, and had lunch at Zacos Tacos (got there right when it opened and there was a line… so go early). Other than that, we did not venture out much into town or to other restaurants because we enjoyed just relaxing at the house and cooking.

I can not say enough about the house, but probably the most wonderful part of it is Susan herself (I never met her). Her email responses were quick, informative and genuinely cheery. If you are thinking about Culebra (it is not for everyone, and hopefully you've done your research), I invite you to consider Casa SuMarco as your home away from home for 5 days, a week or two! You will not be disappointed by any of it.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Mitch-- it was great to "meet" you too :) I've really enjoyed our emails. Sounds like you both got the most out of your time on Culebra and I'm really pleased the house suited you so well. We try to make it as comfortable for guests as we like it to be for us. And you're right that Culebra is not for everyone-- its simple style and pleasures are for a certain kind of traveler. But if it clicks for you, it's a true discovery. Thanks for your enthusiasm and kind words. You're welcome back anytime!

Quaint Casa with Incredible Views

  • 4 of 5

This cute little Casa is in a quiet, secluded part of Culebra whilst being accessible to all parts of the island within ~ 15 minutes.

It's hard to leave the deck and go anywhere - in one direction you're looking at the bay entrance, and in the other towards the town over moored yachts floating in the harbor. The Casa is high enough that the breezes are ample and with the shutters open in every room we found absolutely no need for air-conditioners.

If you want to walk out directly on to a beach this Casa is not for you, but we were quite happy to trundle to places in our rented golf cart.

Susan provides a plethora of useful information, and it takes no time at all to discover the shops and restaurants.

The Casa is well equipped with everything one needs for the style of vacation one has on Culebra.

My only 2 reasons for not giving it 5 stars are;

1. the 2nd bedroom is very small and really not suitable for a family of 4 unless the 2 children are quite young - once the trundle bed is pulled out there is no room left for bags, etc., and

2. it would be preferable to have a later check out.

Stunning views, quaint house.

  • 4 of 5

My husband, son, nephew and myself recently stayed in this quaint little Casa. It is exactly as the description on all vacation websites it is listed and is really comfortable. The views are spectacular (location and Culebra are to be thanked for that), and everything functions well. We found that opening all the shutters allowed a wonderful breeze to cool the house to a perfect temperature without ever having to turn on the air-conditioners (things I'm not keen on). The casa is well located to be reasonably close to everything whilst being in a quiet safe neighborhood. If you want to walk out of the house and straight on to a beach this is not the place for you, but if you are wanting to explore the whole island and are prepared to rent a jeep or golf cart, it is perfect. My husband and I spent a lot of time relaxing on the deck in the mornings whilst the boys slept. It would be very easy not to venture anywhere.

The owner (Susan) provides a plethora of useful information and is very easy to deal with in the lead up to your vacation.

The only reason I did not give it the 5th star is because for 2 15 year old boys who liked to sleep late and spend time lying on their beds the 2nd bedroom was a little small. With the trundle bed pulled out and lifted there is no other room. For a couple or a family with 1 child, this casa is perfect.

My final (very mild) criticism is that check out is at 10am. Noon would be much appreciated. This brings a really abrupt awakening to the fact that one's vacation is over.

Owner's Response: Thanks Amanda! It's wonderful when families can spend time relaxing and just enjoy being together-- I'm glad you had that with your two boys. We love our location too, convenient to town and the beaches, yet in a quiet, pleasant neighborhood. We try to make the most efficient use of space in our little corner of paradise :) and the 2nd bedroom is compact, so when two people use it, tucking the pull-out bed underneath makes it functional during the day. The spacious wraparound deck gets the most mileage. If there are no incoming guests the day of departure we're fine with a noon check-out. But when new folks are arriving the same afternoon, prepping the house needs an earlier start, so you can always leave your packed bags at the house and go out for that last swim if you have a later departure. It's usually not an inconvenience since most guests take an early flight or ferry. Thanks again for choosing Casa SuMarco. We look forward to hosting you again!

The perfect place to get away from it all!

  • 5 of 5

My partner & I just spent a glorious week here last month and are already talking about a return visit next year. All the positive reviews have pretty much said it all and there's not much more to add. If you really want a comfortable place to unwind and just relax this is it. From the amazing view, to all the amenities you could possibly need, every creature comfort has been thought of. My only worry is that change will come someday to this island...it's so unspoiled & charming ( no chain retail stores, cruise ships or Sandals Resorts :-) We got around fine with just a golf cart, but will probably rent a jeep next time (to get to those hard to reach corners of the island). Zoni Beach was our favorite spot and be sure to go there at night for the star watching. Also, be sure to check out The Homeless Dog Cafe for a catered meal you'll never forget. We just can't wait to return to this very special place someday!

Super nice, quiet location and cute vacation home.

  • 4 of 5

Susan's home is adorable, set on a hillside with a great view and even better ocean breeze. Culebra is a delightful, quiet and uncrowded destination. Perfect for relaxing on Sue's covered deck, snorkeling with fish and turtles right off the west shore of the island, or spending some beach time at one of the most beautiful beaches (which is not only devoid of crowds, but compared to most places, can be considered almost deserted!). Sue had everything set up and ready for us with easy instructions, and helpful information about local sites and restaurants. The home is clean, well kept, and centrally located. We have 4 in our family including 2 teenage children. the house was great. The only drawback (if I had to find one) is the bedrooms are small. Not a big issue at all- the house, host help and instructions were super! We look forward to returning sometime in the future.

Casa SuMarco is in a small, friendly and safe neighborhood overlooking Culebra's main bay, Ensenada Honda, considered by many to be the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean. The sunrise-to-sunset panoramic view is breathtaking. We're convenient to all the great beaches, to town, restaurants and shops, markets, the airport and ferry. By car or scooter it's about 6 minutes to Flamenco Beach, 12 minutes to Zoni Beach, 7 minutes to the center of town and the ferry dock.
