Mrs. Gráinne Hanley
We moved to the Charente Maritime from Ireland in Summer 2007. Our children were then aged between 4 and 8yrs and thankfully, they easily settled in.
They were speaking French fluently by that December, probably because they were truly thrown in at the deep end, going to the local school (taking the bus each morning and evening), dining in the school canteen and being involved in lots of local sports clubs. It was much harder for us adults of course.....
We initially bought the house as a holiday home for ourselves and very swiftly decided to bite the bullet and move, for a year or two, just to try something different. The years flew by, we fell in love with here and we ended up staying.
After some years, the opportunity arose for us to purchase the adjoining part of what was originally one large house. We moved next door and now run our original house (complicated!!) as a gite.
Above is a photo of Christmas last in the gite.
As I was unable to host, Nanny & Grandad arrived to save the day. They stayed in the gite and we had a lovely day “visiting” and dining next door!
Last Summer was our first year running the property as a gite, and we truly enjoyed the experience. We had French, Irish and United Kingdom guests, all with children, and all a joy to have (seriously!).
I look forward to welcoming guests again this year but, wherever you choose, I wish you a wonderful break away.
