STYLISH FAMILY HOLIDAY BARN - PEACE & RELAXATION, CLOSE TO BEACHES & ATTRACTIONS

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday barn in Moutiers les Mauxfaits - Maison1601 - Barn Conversion

Sleeps 6, 2 double 1 twin bedroom, massive open plan living area, private garden

The house was built around 1601 from the ancient fossilized stone of the original monastery of Moutiers Les Mauxfait, it was originally built to house cattle but was later turned into a home, the large oak beamed roof structure is original and we’ve managed to retain many interesting features.

Excerpts from guest review...

'We wanted a short break in France and came across this beautiful converted barn. From the outside it's a pretty stone building surrounded by open fields, but inside it's a 5* contemporary pad! All mod cons provided, a fantastic base for exploring the area including the many beaches, or just crashing out and having a bbq whilst enjoying plenty of local wine!'

Things to do...

Indian Forest Adventure has marked trails in the forest, as well as 122 different challenges. Suspended on safety harnesses, you are able to climb, swing, dismount and even slide across the forest at a height of 20ft above the ground. There is also an adventure area for toddlers, with themed bouncy castles, a ball park, rock climbing and an inflatable park. This is an excellent day out for both children and adults and is just 2 minutes from our Gîte. Puy du Fou is where time stands still, and will be an instant hit with children and adults alike. You'll see villages from different eras, gladiators still doing battle and Vikings launching attacks on fortified castles! In the summer, there are 28 evening/night shows with 300 fireworks per show, 2000 digitally-controlled projectors, 1500 computerised fountains, 4500 costumes and many more special effects. There are minstrels in the heart of the woods and master falconers in the meadows. Maison1601 is just a 40 minutes drive from the delightful shops and quayside restaurants of La Rochelle. From the port, you can take to the water and visit Ile d'Aix - and even the famous Fort-Boyard. The Parc des Floralies (under 10 minutes away) is open all summer and entry is free. The park has a forest of oak and pine trees which cover seven hectares. During the spring, blooming tulips, narcissi, hyacinths, crocuses and amaryllis all produce the most wonderful scents! La Rochelle's wonderful Aquarium boasts 10,000 specimens from the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the tropics. With three million litres of water and 64 different aquariums.

Moutiers les mauxfait

Local Town and situated in the South Vendee region, Moutiers les Mauxfaits and the surrounding area are known for their outstanding warmth and charm.

Moutiers les Mauxfaits is a pretty picturesque French village/town. Its main attraction is its 18th century market hall, built in 1765 on the site of an earlier structure, it has 41 Doric stone pillars (pictured above) with a total of 60 Oak posts, imposing king posts and other timber structures supports the 4 piece tiled roof. The hall has been the venue of a market Fair since the middle ages, and it is still in use today.

The church of St Jacques de Moutiers les Mauxfaits which dates from 1170 is built on the site of an earlier church and monastre and was originally named St Michel, it took the name St Jacques on 9th July 1451. From earliest times it has suffered badly, burnt down by the Huguenot in 1568 and by the troops of Soubise in 1622. During the Vendee wars the church went into another period of deteriation being turned into a granier before in 1817 seeing the start of reconstruction.

The village/town has an array of shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, post office and a bank.

About Neil & Angela

Two free spirits with a passion for adventure, we have a 4 year old son called Billy-Scott, we love to travel and appreciate the finer things in life, a deserted beach or a snowy mountain vista, oh and maybe the odd swanky restuarant and coctail bar ;-) we have a passion for action sports and both love to Snowboard, Mountain Bike and Kite Board.

Neil & Angela purchased this barn in 2006

Why Neil & Angela chose Moutiers les Mauxfaits

After travelling all over the world we decided that France was the place for us, we visited the whole of the French coast as we spent a year touring in a motor home travelling Europe, we chose this area in the Vendee as in our opinion it is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, great weather and very welcoming locals. When we first saw this house it was a beautiful ruin taken over by nature, originally built in 1601 as a cattle barn and built using ancient stone from the original monastery of Moutiers Les Mauxfait, it has taken a good few years to renovate, but all the hard work has really been worth it, we hope to retire there one day.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house had everything needed in it without the clutter, it was definitely a luxury home from home. Very comfortable beds, well laid out kitchen/dining and living room (large open plan). Good outer space for eating in the garden, plus a barbecue. It was well laid out with loungers and an eating space.

Around the house is very pretty with lots of wildlife, the beach was only a short drive and the area had lots of fun things to do for the kids. All in all we had a lovely time.

Secluded Luxury Gite

  • 4 out of 5
Lovely gite with above average fixtures and fittings. Quality kitchen, and lots of games, DVD's, Sky TV with UK TV programmes. We really enjoyed our time here, and were just a few minutes away from the sea. The local village has everything you need, butchers, bakers, supermarket with fuel, bars and restaurants. Neil and Angela are very helpful if you have questions.

Fantastic barn in rural area

Recommended to friends and family, some have already been to stay and they loved it too.

If you like wildlife, we saw local otter/beaver type creatures, deer, various birds all within 100 meters of the front door. Amazing!

Gite in Moutiers les Mauxfaits

  • 5 out of 5
A high standard of accomodation in a beautiful quiet setting, we found it to be clean and well maintained with everything we needed for a brilliant holiday. 2 minutes from the village centre where you can buy fresh bread from the local bakery and get most of your supplies from the supermarket, they have a street market a couple of times a week selling local produce. The Gite is set well back from the road down a track, there is a pond where otters live, the children spent hours watching them play around on the banks. The local beaches are a joy to visit totally natural and unspoilt, safe for children. There are many places of interest to visit close by and I would definately recommend this as a good family holiday to family and friends, we will be going back.

Set in a very beautiful peaceful location surrounded by countryside yet not too far from all the best attractions the south Vendee has to offer. The central section of this newly renovated stone farm building built in 1601, located 2 minutes from the pretty village of Moutier Les Mauxfait, part of a English owned renovation of 4 ancient stone holiday gites, 3 completed and one with internal restoration left to finish, but rest assured no work will be undertaken during your stay.

Situated just 8 minutes from the beaches on the south coast of the Vendee and only a 15 minutes drive from La tranche sur mer. This beautiful Gite has been decorated in a contemporary style while still retaining many original features.

The area is ideal for those who appreciate plenty of family fun, 40 minutes approximately from La Rochelle, Nantes and 20 minutes from Les Sables d'Olonne. The coast is very beautiful as it is backed by protected pine forests, you can if you wish take a boat trip and visit many islands (ile de re, fort boyard, ile d'aix, ile d'yeu, ile d'oleron). There is also ample outside space for relaxing or having barbecue parties.
