LOVELY 18TH-CENTURY RURAL COTTAGE WITH OWN PRIVATE POOL

Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Saint-Jean-d'Angely area

Detached, self-catering farmhouse with 4 bedrooms sleeping 8 in comfort

A charming, beautifully restored detached stone cottage with private pool in a rural hamlet a few miles from the medieval market town of St Jean d'Angely, and under an hour's drive from the sandy beaches of the Atlantic Coast. The perfect location for those who want to be quiet without being too remote, and with plenty to keep the children occupied. Maison Guerin, which is believed to be around 175 years old, is situated on a quiet lane in the village of St Pierre de Juillers. At the bottom of the lane is a stone bridge crossing the small River Nie, with woodland, fields of corn, sunflowers, the odd vineyard and excellent cycling routes beyond. The house sits in its own walled garden, which includes a courtyard with old well and bread oven. Beyond is the swimming pool, which is 10m x 4m and 1.5m deep, and surrounded by a paved terrace on which are sunbeds, table, chairs and umbrella. Two games rooms offer full-size table tennis, pool, baby football and darts.

Suitability:

A truly relaxing stay in a lovely house. Loads to do in the area, but the weather was so good we spent most of our time around the pool! We must return. Thanks again.

Wonderful Relaxing Holiday

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at Maison Guerin for a week in August 2010 along with another family of four and we had the most wonderful holiday. The two spacious games rooms were very well used by our children; two aged 15, a 10 yr old and a 13 year old, but the highlight of the holiday was definitely the pool - it was used everyday and the children braved it even on the cooler days.

It was our first holiday to France and we drove down from Cambridge in approx 12 hours with stops, the drive was very easy and totally stress free with almost clear roads for the whole route.

The house itself was well equipped and had everything we needed. The farmer at the end of the lane is very friendly and everyone we came across was lovely. If you like running and cycling there are plenty of quiet and picturesque routes straight from the house.

St Jean d'Angely is an easy 10 minute drive away for shopping and restaurants. We visited Cognac, but found it very expensive and, (using the top tip in the brochure in the house), we found a beautiful beach with a free car park and great facilities in Royan - but we didn't venture much further as everyone was more than happy just to laze by the pool.

Our only moan would be that it would have been nice to have an outside table that we could all fit around - but we found plenty of tables around the house and put them together, so we could make the most of the balmy evenings and the beautiful starry skies. I understand that a large outside table is imminent now too.

If you like a relaxing, quiet, peaceful holiday then Maison Guerin ticks every box - our only regret is that we didn't go for two weeks!

Lovely Place

  • 5 out of 5
Went there with my two kids and partner ( 10 and 13 yrs ) plus my partner's sister / husband and their two kids ( 5 and 22 months )..

Was really pleased with all aspects, the pool really is as good as it looks and very clean. Table tennis, darts, table football and pool were all good fun. Along with the small extra cost for broadband all the kids well catered for including bike riding around the VERY quiet roads and tracks.

I was lucky enough to have a fan in my room ( life saver ) as it was very warm 30+ degrees on some days..

Contrary to previous poster we all found the pool temp fine fine, although it took a couple of mins to get used to on cooler days ( the thermometer showed 28 degress )

One thing i found is a must, the French Mosquito spray was no good so i'd recommend taking some UK Raid with the white cap and also some Jugle repellant spray ( Green can ) which works well..

Along with a lovely kitchen there is also a BBQ outside which was big enough for me to cook for 7 of us easily enough.

I would echo the previous posters re getting out and about and visiting places. I found the people very helpful and friendly even though i have almost no French vocab at all .. ( Needs attention )

All in all very nice indeed and will go again,,

Maison Guerin

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at the well equipped Maison Guerin in July 2010. It was perfect for us - four adults and three children. The children loved the games rooms with table tennis, table football, pool and darts and we all made good use of the pool as the weather was great. The surrounding countryside is very pretty and we enjoyed visiting St Jean D'Angeley, Cognac and Saintes. We would recommend the tour of the cognac producer Joan Brisson in Matha - http://www.cognac-brisson.com/content/5-visit-us.

Brilliant Holiday

  • 5 out of 5
Thank you immensely for the rental of your home this summer. Yes the weather was fantastic and so was your house! We had a wonderful, relaxing 2 week break, in a fabulous part of France.

I cannot thank Helen and David enough. They were so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had a great time, so a big thank you, once again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your delightful house in Courgeon, Charente Maritime, which
matched the description exactly. Can't say how great was our welcome to the house. Helen was wonderful and most helpful.

I would be glad to recommend it to others.

Corinne.

Lovely large house in hamlet in a rural area

  • 4 out of 5
We stayed here in July 2009. It is perfectly placed, about 10 minutes' drive from the nearest large town (St-Jean d'Angély), and about 30-40 minutes from places like Saintes and Cognac, and about an hour or just over to La Rochelle.

We used the pool a lot when the weather was warm, but it was a bit too cold (not heated) on cloudy days.

The small courtyard was great for cooking barbecues and eating out, and was just big enough for our 5 year old to enjoy playing boules and cricket.

We couldn't get the broadband wi-fi to work, but we were able to connect our laptop using a cable, which was fine by us.

We didn't hire the air conditioning - it didn't quite get hot enough while we were there. But there were a couple of nights when we would like to have had the use of a fan (would recommend you bring one if you stay here).

Save for the sound of cows, sheep, cockerels and pigeons, it was far quieter than you might imagine, even though it is surrounded by a few other houses, and is in the middle of a small hamlet.

All in all, a great place to stay. We enjoyed it very much.

St Jean d'Angely, about 5 miles away, is a beautiful medieval town with a fantastic market and loads of good restaurants. There are lots of interesting towns nearby to visit, including Saintes, Cognac, Surgeres and some beautiful beach resorts along the coast under an hour away, including La Rochelle, Royan, Ile de Re, Ile d'Oleron, Meschers, Fouras, Brouages, we could go on! For kids, there are water parks, zoos, an aquarium, boat trips, beaches, playgrounds, etc all within easy reach. Also not far, at Poitiers, is the highly recommended Futuroscope which is a fantastic day out for the whole family.
