Kefalonia is a spectacular and varied island well worthy of exploration. A drive across to Sami will take you through valleys of well ordered vineyards and through traditional Kefalonian villages. You will come to the monastery of St Gerasimos the island Saint with it's 16th century church. A much larger and very beautiful church was built after the 1953 earthquake. The walls are covered in vibrant paintings and it's very ornate. Twice yearly on 16th August and 20th October there is a large festival and street market, everybody on the island attends.
A visit to the top of Mount Aenos, 162 m high with views of the whole island, the Greek mainland, Zante and Lefkas is a must. A new road goes right to the summit through pine trees and moss covered boulders. For walkers there are marked trails. It's really different up on the mountain and makes a welcome change from the beach but choose a clear day!
A relaxing lunch in one of the many excellent tavernas on Sami harbour watching the ferries and yachts coming in and out is a delight. Why not take the road to Anti Samos beach, a pebble beach in a wonderful setting. The ancient ruins of Sami are worth a visit. Ferries depart from Sami to various destinations including Ithaca. A day trip to Ithaca is well worth the effort, the views from the circular coast road are outstanding and Vathy, the main town unspoiled and interesting.
Further around the bay of Sami lies the village of Aghia Efimia again with numerous good tavernas. The road from Efimia to Fiskardo in the north of the island provides wonderful views. The views on the backward trip from Fiskardo to Argostoli via Assos with it's Venetian Castle and the nearby famous Myrtos Beach is also very scenic.
