Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Galmpton - Barnacle Cottage
Comfortable open plan living downstairs with 2 bedrooms and bathroom upstairs.

Barnacle Cottage is located in the village of Galmpton, in the heart of the Dart Valley (within the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and a few miles from Brxiham harbour. The location is perfect for a holiday and has everything within a short drive, whilst offering much character as well as a quiet and rural village life. It lies only a mile from the coast with sandy beaches and provides local shopping and a pub. The self catering cottage -- awarded 3 stars - caters comfortably for 2 + 2 people with a double and a smaller bedroom. The open plan ground floor incorporates a comfortable seating area with 2 sofas, dining table and a well equipped kitchen. There is a front stable door and to the side off road parking. With no houses in sight and country views from every room the cottage boasts a very traditional cosy atmosphere with original beams, open stone walls, turning wooden staircase etc. To the rear stone steps lead up to a breathtaking garden with lovely views.

Additional Accommodation: Next door, Port Hill Cottage has two lovely bedrooms with private bathroom available for extra friends or family! The rooms are located away from the residential bedrooms and offer quiet and separate accommodation for up to 4 people. Please see pictures named Port Hill Cottage to see details of the rooms and bathroom. If you would be interested in extra rooms please ask for prices when you email me.

Local Sights and Activities: The picturesque village of Galmpton offers a friendly village shop and butcher and a pub/restaurant, which is exactly half a mile from Barnacle Cottage.

The immediate area offers a wealth of activities including stunning coastal walks, beautiful beaches and river cruises. Try a passenger ferry ride over the Dart to Dittisham for a drink at The Ferry Boat Inn.

The Greenway House & Gardens on the banks of the River Dart run by National Trust is easily accessed from the village. Once Agatha Christie's summer home, the house has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is newly opened to the public. It offers a glorious day with enchanting views, a cafe and a shop to browse. See the National Trust website for more information and to prebook car parking etc.

Blue Flag awarded sandy Broadsands Beach is just over a mile from the Cottage. Enjoy many river and coastal walks in this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Charter local skipper Pete for a river trip to yourselves for a day :dartcharters.co.uk

Brixham and Dartmouth: Nearby Brixham offers much in the way of a quaint and working fishing town with an abundance of nautical activities such as boat trips, sailing and fishing. Choose from many good restaurants where locally caught fish is always on the menu.

The historic town of Dartmouth can be reached via passenger or car ferry and offers great restaurants, markets, music festivals in May and a Regatta in August.

The medieval historic town of Totnes has an abundance of independent shops, markets, tea rooms and riverside restaurants. From here the wonderful South Hams beaches are easily accessible as is Dartmoor National Park.

Steam railway trips and Paington Zoo are among the wealth of childrens' activities.

Charter local skipper Pete for your own day or half day out on the River Dart, with catering and optional tuition. See more detail on the boat charters at Dartcharters.co.uk.

About Phyllis Norman

Been lucky in my life to become well travelled since childhood which gave me permanent itchy feet, but now fairly settled here in Devon for the past nine years with one son, two dogs and a cat.

I feel as if I am on permanent vacation here in glorious South Devon and never tire of the fabulous beaches and scenery, coastal paths and walks in the surrounding Dart Valley and along the coast

I am truly blessed to be living in such a glorious place. More importantly it is the celebration of food and produce that I am really passionate about. Yes, whilst living in London you can have a delivery of organic vegetables but here it is just right here on your door step, Sorry veggies, but I drive past the herd of cows daily that I know I am going to find in my own butchers in a matter of weeks and I drive through the countryside where passionate organic farmers battle with the changing climate to bring us the real thing to our plates. Some even have tried the rat race themselves and come home to where it matters.

Phyllis Norman purchased this cottage in 2004
Why Phyllis Norman chose Galmpton

The minute I saw the property and location of the cottages for the first time, I was in love. Coming down for a weekend from busy, stressed out London to house hunt, I saw the two gorgeous cottages and never looked back. Went back to London and immediately put in an offer and a few months later was here. I only saw the one property! Mad? Yes, but I have no regrets.

What makes this cottage unique

I think visitors enjoy all the benefits I saw in this lovely, serene area directly surrounding the property. The peacefulness, the night sky full of stars, just the feeling that you are alone and without interference from others. The 'silence' is sensational, just the bird song. I love it!

Beautiful little cottage

4 out of 5
Review Submitted: 19 June 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
We stayed in Barnacle cottage for a week over easter and had a wonderful time. The cottage is small but beautiful and really well set up, very comfortable beds and a pub within walking distance! We were welcomed by the owner with some home made scones and clotted cream which was a lovely start and we had arranged with her to have an organic food delivery from Riverford farm. There was lots of information about the area and the owner gave us recommendations too. There was plenty to do with the kids, mackeral fishing, crabbing, beaches, horse riding and beautiful walks. It's also dog friendly and lots of pubs were too. I definitely recommend the peoperty.

Perfect Retreat

Review Submitted: 21 May 2012 Date of Stay: May 2012
A friend and I were looking for a relaxing few days away and came across Barnacle Cottage.
It looked lovely on the website and certainly didnt disappoint in real life. it was extremely comfortable, had everything you could possibly need and was a great base to come back to. The location is great with it being so central and is within easy driving distance of so many lovely places.
We were both made to feel very welcome as was our little dog. We couldnt have wished for a nicer place to stay and certainly intend to return when staying in Devon. The beds were extremely comfortable, we both slept like logs ! Cant fault anything at all - a perfect place to stay.
Phyllis was a joy to deal with and the Cream Tea on arrival was much appreciated after a long drive down.

Beautiful Cottage in a lovely setting

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 15 April 2012 Date of Stay: April 2012
We have just returned home following our second holiday at Barnacle cottage and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Barnacle cottage is cosy, comfortable and well equipped to meet all your needs during your stay with extremely comfortable beds. The location is perfect, with far reaching views over fields and a huge garden that the whole family loved. We found it the perfect base to explore the picturesque local beaches, River Dart, go for long walks and visit the many attractions within the area. These included the Greenways walk, crabbing off of Dittisham Pier, Elberry Cove, Broadsands, Goodrington sands, riding on the steam railway, shopping in Dartmouth and the kids loved Woodlands Leisure park!

Phyllis is the perfect hostess, nothing is too much trouble and her 2 dogs are lovely!

We'll definately be visiting again in the not too distant future

Just returned from 4 day stay with my 2yo granddaughter, welcomed by owner with Scones, jam & cream. Cottage in delightful location on a quiet country road but close enough to walk to local village, great shops with very friendly and helpful staff, supplying local produce, butcher is a great source of knowledge. We had a great time and were lucky to have sunny weather each day. Would rate this cottage A*

Pink-washed perfection in South Devon

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 22 October 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
If you're searching for a cosy, well-equipped and charming holiday rental on the English Riviera, look no further than Barnacle Cottage. We stayed here for a fortnight this June and had an absolutely wonderful time.

Not only does it look like everyone's idea of the picture-perfect, pink-washed, wisteria-covered Devon cottage, it's just so well-equipped with TWO SAT-TVs, WiFi internet access and every gadget or piece of kitchen equipment you could possibly need. Add to this 2 charming bedrooms with really comfy beds and the use of the lovely, large, sun-trap garden, what more could you ask?

Galmpton itself is a pretty village (do walk down to the quay) with excellent pub, well-stocked village store and even a common to walk the dog and is so near to Brixham and Torquay and yet away from all their noise and bustle.

Quite apart from being a great cottage for a family bucket-and-spade break, Barnacle is also excellently located as a touring base, with the Dart Estuary and Dartmouth on the doorstep and Totnes, Dartington, Dartmoor and Exeter all within easy reach. Agatha Christie's Greenway is just along the lane and half a dozen other National Trust places are nearby, including Art-Deco Coleton Fishacre and its glorious gardens.

The owner is so friendly and helpful - we were welcomed with a Devon Cream Tea in the garden on arrival - and Barnacle is also very dog-friendly. Your (well-behaved) pooch will be made most welcome but be aware that resident hounds Gip and Jenny expect their four-legged guests to be as nice as they are.

We'll certainly be back!
