This beautiful lake region of Italy is not the best for skiing as you may imagine, despite its scenery, crisp air and near perfect visibilty and mountains capped in winter snow. It does however have Skiing opportunities at local resorts for a day out.
There is a small ski area on Mt. Lema, not more than 10 km from Lugano, but you have to be lucky to have enough snow for skiing. In Ticino, the local Swiss Canton, the best places to ski are probably either San Bernardino (south of the pass of the same name) or Airolo (south of Gotthard pass). Both are reachable in about 1 hour by car across the Swiss border.
There are direct trains to Airolo as well from Lugano and hence from Italian Stations. To S. Bernardino there is only a bus connection. For more snow try Andermatt (on the north side of Gotthard pass) which has normally good snow conditions and a good choice of runs.
The closest major ski resorts are St. Moritz and Madesimo toward the Splugen Pass which is approx.100km.
The vibrant cafe-lined centre of Tremezzo provides the ideal place for a morning cappuccino and sampling local cuisine. The famous wine bar of ‘La Cantina’ is situated in beautiful ancient cellars in the backwater of Tremezzo, set just off from the main cafes, guests can really experience authentic Italian ‘Aperitifs’ with fabulous meat and cheese selection boards, a wide variety of incredible wines and a romantic vine covered outdoor terrace to enjoy in the summer months. The stunning ‘Aqua Cheta’ boathouse bar is situated in Tremezzo’s beautiful landscaped lakefront park and here guests can enjoy drinks and aperitifs right by the waterside.
For those looking to dine out somewhere special than the famous lakefront ‘La Darsena’ and hillside Agroturismo of ‘La Fagurida’ are highly recommended! A wide variety is provided for guests from authentic inexpensive Pizzerias to incredible fine Italian restaurants so guests are really spoilt for choice along the central lake!
A selection of grocery shops, a paper shop, boutique clothes shop and hairdressers can also be found and a frequent bus and passenger ferry service also conveniently operate from the famous resort town.
The famous attractions of Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello are easily reachable from Tremezzo as is the picturesque resort town of Menaggio and the Cadenabbia car and passenger ferry service to the other famous golden triangle towns of Bellagio and Varenna.
