Luxury self-catering manor house, 4 star (french tourist board) sleeps 12 adults in 6 bedrooms with 5 bathrooms (including one ground floor suite) in sunny southern Charente. Smaller parties at reduced rates out of high season - please ask. Private rural setting with large pool, sauna, games barn with badminton, table tennis, table football and BBQ, extensive gardens including an enclosed child-friendly back garden. Country views all round. Spacious rooms and living areas. Fully equipped kitchen with Smeg oven and American style fridge/freezer, study, TV room with DVD, large dining and sitting rooms. Welcome hamper, shopping service, 3hrs cleaning per week, occasional meals by arrangement. Central heating if required. Flexible accommodation includes twins, doubles and family rooms. Near Cognac and wine growing areas of Bordeaux and St Emilion (both World Heritage sites), sheltered beaches and the rivers of Charente and Dordogne. The southern Charente: The area around La Vaure is characterised by beautiful rolling countryside, punctuated by vineyards that produce Cognac, Pineau des Charentes and red and white wines. The countryside is criss-crossed by charming rivers such as the Charente, and the Dronne which can be explored by hire canoe or kayak. Nearer the coast the landscape changes, becoming much flatter. This is where oysters are farmed in the estuaries of the rivers, and in the oysterbeds that punctuate the picturesque island of Oleron and Ré. The whole area benefits from being between the great weather systems to the north and to the south, a micro climate that gives us sun to rival the Cote d'Azur.

Close to the beautiful towns of St Emilion and Bordeaux, both famous for their wines and both UNESCO World Heritage sites due to their beauty and international importance, and also close to Cognac where you can take tours around the famous makers of this delicious spirit. Not far from the coast, with its extensive beaches, beautiful towns such as La Rochelle, and resorts such as the isles of Oleron and Ré, and within striking distance of regions such as the 'Venice Vert' or the Marais Poitevin where you can hire a punt to spend the day amongst the secluded canals and waterways. Within 20 minutes drive are many Romanesque villages with weekly markets, Aubeterre with its extraordinary underground cathedral, and the beautiful river of the Dronne which you can explore by hiring canoes. There is also horse riding nearby for all ages, and La Vaure is 5 minutes' drive from a swimming lake with a sandy beach and restaurant, a great change for young children.

Golf: There are several golf courses nearby, with 18 hole courses at Angouleme and Cognac, both less than an hour away, and 9 holes at Longeveau near Aubeterre, about 20 minutes away.

  • All double bedrooms also have single beds which can be made up as sofas/day beds. All double bedrooms can be made up as twin room or family rooms. All double rooms have their own bath or shower room and toilet. The 2 twin rooms share a large family bathroom with toilet. Up to two cots can be provided. The downstairs double room has french doors opening onto the back garden, has its own bathroom and seperate toilet, and communicates with the rest of the house without the need to use any stairs.

Notes:
Accommodation is designed to sleep 12 adults/teenagers, with up to 4 additional smaller children. The TV room is adjacent to the dining room and is intended to be child friendly (easily clean-able leather sofa, for example). The sitting room contains a stereo, and has a study leading from it, with a desk, telephone point, broadband internet and a well stocked library. The first 10 euros of phone calls are included, and any phone usage above this is itemised and payable at standard France Telecom rates. The ground floor can be accessed from the back of the house and from the back garden without steps (e.g. by wheelchair). The back garden can be secured with a high gate (to contain toddlers, for example). The pool has an alarm, and the whole pool area is surrounded by a fence that will prevent toddlers reaching the pool. There is also a large (14 foot) trampoline.
