Janet Hamilton purchased this apartment in 2003

Why Janet Hamilton chose County Down

Simply....the views are second to none! We have travelled the world and stayed in many wonderful places but the view of the mountains and the bay at Dundrum captured our heart. We plan to retire there and can't imagine ourselves ever parting with it! It has been our pleasure to share it with guests from all around the world and many return each year, sometimes twice or three times a year to enjoy it! I think it has captured their heart also!

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is one of only three properties at The Quay which have floor to ceiling corner windows taking in both the views of the Bay and the Mountains. We may be bias but we believe we chose the best spot! It is bright and spacious and as soon as you walk in through the doors, we guarantee you will relax! It is totally calm and peaceful and it wouldn't be hard to lose track of time kicking back and enjoying the ever changing views. We take pride in how we present the apartment for our guests and the furnishings, artwork, bedlinen etc are all of good quality. Believe me, we want you to have a wonderful experience and to enjoy your stay at the apartment as much as we do!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We received these lovely comments on a "thank you" card from our recent guests "Dear Janet, We had a really lovely holiday at your wonderful apartment. It is so comfortable and convenient and we will never forget the views of the bay and mountains. There are so many nice places close to Dundrum and we enjoyed walks at Murlough and around the mountains and the weather was mainly good. Many thanks for everything. Best wishes to you and your family"

Heavenly

  • 5 out of 5
In a quest to get away from it all I spent 3 nights at this beautiful and really comfortable apartment with its glorious views. The weather was changeable and I think I experienced 3 different seasons in as many days but the sea and landscape were captivating all the while. The view seemed to be ever changing and in tune with the elements and I could easily spend the days just watching and contemplating the majesty of it all. At times I honestly thought I had died and gone to heaven!

Wow is right. Beautiful place and area to visit.

  • 5 out of 5
I read the great reviews and I saw the pictures, and yet I still walked into this apartment and said "wow". The apartment was set up for us beautifully on arrival, exactly as depicted in the photos on the site. We got lucky in late September with weather and were still able to sit out on the balcony with a drink to truly take in the area.

This was a great location for two golfing couples to stay and play Royal County Down and Ardglass. We cooked our own meals and also enjoyed two excellent restaurants two minutes walk away. The apartment is modern and very stylish. It was a favourite stay in our 3 week trip around northern Ireland.

Great apartment with splendid views

  • 5 out of 5
Initially we chose the apartment due to its proximity to the National Trust Murlough National Nature Reserve as we were to take home our son who had been a volunteer there for a year. In the end we regretted not to have booked the apartment for a further week as we enjoyed our stay so much.
When we arrived after a two days car journey from Germany we found the apartment spotless clean, very welcoming and the four of us felt immediately very much at home and were amazed about the space we had. The views are just splendid and the photos shown in the internet don’t lie - the apartment is really that nice and spacious.
The area is great for walking either on the Reserve, along the beach to Newcastle (you not even need a car for that) or in the Mournes - the Mourne Wall is definite worth the effort. This time we did not visit Castle Ward or Mount Stewart which are also in more or less easy reach and really nice places to go to but tried to find our way through the Peace Maze in the Castlewellan Forestpark (I gave up in the end) and also enjoyed the tranquility in the walled garden there.
If ever I come to Northern Ireland again I will definitely come here again and perhaps then there will be a bit more time just to sit on the balcony or the sofa and admire the views.

Owner's Response: I am delighted that your stay at Dundrum worked out so well for you Heike. It was a pleasure having and your family visit all the way from Germany and I'm so pleased that you got to enjoy so much of this lovely area. The walks along Murlough Nature reserve, the beach and the Mourne Mountains are indeed beautiful. I'm equally glad that you found the apartment so welcoming and comfortable. I hope that we can welcome you back for that 2 week stay in the near future!

Could not ask for more!

  • 5 out of 5
I had high expectations of the place because of the past reviews and all were met. Dundrum is a small town but there were enough restaurants within walking distance for nice dinners - Buck Heads and lobster night at Mourne Seafood is a must...and after a long day of touring it was so nice to come back to this spectacular setting. The place is beautiful and so clean. My children enjoyed playing at the beach every evening. The views are spectacular and so such a great central spot to do any sight seeing. Janet was so prompt with answering any questions and returning the deposit! Do not hesitate booking this spot!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind comments Karen. I'm delighted that your expectations were met and that you loved the apartment and the views. It's a lovely sight watching the children play in the beach in front of the apartment. We will definitely have to try the lobster night at the Mourne Seafood Bar! Thanks again for staying with us and hopefully we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back soon.

Not to be missed!

  • 5 out of 5
I can't say enough good things about this property and it's owner, Janet. My husband I finished up a three week trip to Ireland that started with a week-long Brendan coach tour of Southern Ireland. (I'll never do one of their trips again, but I'll comment that on a different review) After the bus tour we rented a car and spent two days in Belfast and two days in Ballymena, my father's birth place and finished up our trip with a week at Janet's apartment at The Quay on Dundrum Bay. The apartment was sparkling clean, the bathrooms had clearly been recently redone and were very modern as was the kitchen. The living area had the balcony as shown in the pictures, but the rest of her description in my opinion does not event start to adequately describe the beauty of this place and it's surroundings. The is actually a two for one deal. Of course when the tide is in it is lovely to look at the water, but when the tide goes out you get an entirely different scenario for your enjoyment. We saw kayakers take their kayaks to the little rivers formed as the tide left, we saw parents with young children digging for clams in the sand, we saw people jogging along the water's edge as it receded and we saw people riding horses in the sand!It doesn't get any better then this. Janet was a wonderful person to work with, very attentive and helpful. You really wouldn't need a car to have your needs met. Excellent restaurants, and small grocery store to buy the necessary food to make simple meals are within a couple minutes walking distance .However, if you desire, larger grocery stores are just a short drive away. Also, although you get the feel that you are in a secluded small coastal town, you can drive a mile and come to another charming town, go an additional two miles to arrive at another small town (both of which have great pubs, etc.). The fireplace in the apartment actually throws enough heat to keep everything toasty warm on a damp day and throws off a lovely glow. Dundrum castle is a very short walk. My husband and I spent four hours hiking it's trail and walking in and around the castle. You can take absolutely magnificent pictures from the top of the castle. The surroundings capture the countryside as one would picture it to be it in Ireland. We certainly hope to return, but for a longer stay. As I said, I would HIGHLY recommend this wonderful retreat to anyone.

This spacious, luxury 3 bedroom apartment offers stunning, uninterrupted mountain and bay views. This is a superb spot for bird-watching and seal-spotting. There is a beach right at your doorstep and you are a short walk to the nature reserve of Murlough Bay and the ruins of Dundrum castle which offers superb views and is great for picnics. The nearby village contains a supermarket, antique shops, beauty salons and some renowned restaurants. You're in Ireland so there are plenty of pubs within walking distance! A short drive away will take you to the town of Newcastle at the foot of the Mournes and Castlewellan where you have access to any number of outdoor activities, golf, fishing, mountain climbing, canoeing, abseiling, sailing, mountain biking, tennis etc. Newcastle has a heated outdoor swimming pool during the summer months. You are a 30 minute drive to Strangford Lough, 40 minutes to Belfast ,1.5 hrs to the stunning Antrim Coast and Giants Causeway and 2 hours to Dublin.

Golf: Royal County Down is one of the oldest and most renowned Golf Clubs in Ireland with traditions dating back for more than one hundred years. In 2007 the Walker Cup matches were held here. Situated in Newcastle, where in the immortal words of Percy French, 'The Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea', Royal County Down is not only a fine test of golf but has accompanying scenery that is spellbinding. Alongside the Championship Links, Royal County Down has a second course, The Annesley Links. Laid out beneath the same massive, almost menacing backdrop, the Annesley Links is nowhere near as intimidating or as formidable a challenge as the Championship Links, but then it was never intended to be. It is a course for everyone. (Extracts from the official Royal County Down Golf Course website). For further details tel: (028) 4372 3314
