Penang: Situated along the north-western coast of the peninsula, Penang is Malaysia’s only “island state”. Locals are fondly known as Penangites, many of whom will proudly tell you that the state comprising a population of approximately 1.5 million, is a close-knit community of diverse ethnicities, cultures and dialects.
One of Malaysia’s premier holiday destinations, the 285km2 island is separated from Seberang Prai (formerly Province Wellesley) – a hinterland of 737km2 on the mainland, by a narrow 3km channel.
You can either cross the channel via the iconic Penang Bridge or by the ferry – the latter being a “must experience” simply because it is synonymous with holidaying here. Soon, visitors will have the option of using the new Second Penang Bridge which is expected to be completed in 2011.
The colour and rich history of Penang Island provide the backdrop and inspiration for The Suites at Waterside. For over two centuries, this vibrant island has been a magnet for adventurers from around the world.
Today, it continues to attract international guests who come for its white sandy beaches, grand colonial architecture, world famous food, and myriad festivals- all of which add a special charm and character to this inimitable Asian city.
A fascinating fusion of the East and West, Penang embraces modernity while retaining its traditions and old world charm. These are reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings which led to George Town being accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site recently. Long regarded as the food capital of Malaysia, Penang also entices visitors with its beautiful coasts and scrumptious cuisines.
Having just returned I was keen to get my thoughts down before they fade too much!
Firstly Penang. An Island state within Malaysia it is rightly called the Pearl of the Orient. Tourist friendly without being too touristy, full of friendly people, UNESCO protected buildings and some of the best food you will ever taste. The people make you feel safe and welcome, and with the level of English being good it makes it a pretty easy way to enter Asia.
Situated on the coast it is about 30 minutes from the Airport and ideally located to explore the city or the less inhabited parts of the Island. What makes Straits Quay special is its design, it stands no more than 6 floors high and its integration between the Condo's, the shopping arcade and the myriad bar and eateries. This makes for a very attractive and kind of intimate village atmosphere which is so different to high rise living. The shops are excellent although the arcade is still developing and the places to eat and drink are all uniformly good.
Now, finally on to the Condo itself.
Situated on the 4th floor the Condo doesn't face the sea (which I discovered may be a good thing as the sea orientated condo's also get too much sun and heat) but overlooks a little marketplace. It is private, quiet and located 90 seconds away from a well-appointed Gym and a truly fantastic pool area (which we just about had to ourselves).
It is beautifully appointed and furnished, with everything you could possibly need to cook and enjoy a meal, wash or just lounge about and watch a movie or read a book on the balcony. Also for me very importantly great water pressure and a great shower!! It is a place you could walk into and enjoy for 2 days or 2 months.
With a TESCO 5 minutes walk away should you need it, and a lovely marketplace on Saturdays you will want for nothing, and have a great base as well!
Finally I should mention the logistics in terms of the Condo's owner and the lady who will look after you when you stay.
As I live in China and this holiday was about getting my 80 year old Mum up from New Zealand and back to Asia, and in a place she could enjoy, well I was a little stressed about things. I should have relaxed. Both the owner Trevor and the local manager Patricia have obviously been doing this for years and they bent over backwards to help and to make it easy for us to just relax.
I hated leaving, and definitely intend to enjoy Straits Quay again at some time in the future.
Straits Quay is a brand new development built on the water frontage around a marina and is situate on the north coast of the island of Penang. The location is ideal as it is conveniently situated for the city of Georgetown being only 5km for the city centre. It is 2km away for Gurney Drive a water front avenue famous for it's local food delicacies with a number of top hotels and restaurants along it.
Situated on the Northern coast of the island where the best beaches are located, the coast road as small and quite beaches along it the nearest is 2km away the leads all the way to Batu Ferringhi a popular beach resort about 10km easily reached by the coastal road avoiding the traffic of Georgetown.
Golf: Bukit Jambul Golf & Country Club of Penang - Apparently Robert Trent Jones Jr. 'chiselled' out from 130 acres of hilly jungle terrain and crags and designed this course in 1984.
Bukit Jawi Golf Resort of Seberang Perai, Penang - A 36-hole golfers' paradise spreads over a spectacular 315 acres of swaying palms, sand dunes and coolly contoured lakes; tests your skills for both hilly terrain as well as open play with lots of water hazards.
Penang Golf Resort of Bertam - Seberang Perai, Penang - Penang Golf Resort, or simply Bertam to most locals, is actually located on the more land-free mainland section of the State of Penang.
Ski: Water skiing and other water sports available on the northern beaches but weather far to nice for the 'white' stuff!!
