HISTORIC HUNTING LODGE, 'PETIT CHATEAU' IN PROVENCE ALPES C D'AZUR W LARGE POOL

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Fayence - Villa Cambaras

Park-size garden, view of medieval villages, close to beaches and mountains

Villa Cambaras is a romantic, charmingly restored and furnished hunting lodge (petit Chateau) from Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur's Italy inspired period (before 1830s).

The main building has Italian frescoes in the cealing, furnished with antique and modern furniture - stylish yet not austentatious.

The property is surrounded by vineyards, hilltop villages, first class golf courses like the world renouned Terre Blanche - 10 min to a lake, less than half an hour to the wonderful Theoule sur mer sandy beach - and 35 min to the nearest ski slope.

The driveway is lined with 200 year old Lebanese Cedar tree and there is a 14 , 5 meter swimmingpol perfect for daily swimming excercises. The property has park like dimensions, 1.5 acres, and has an excellent view on to Fayence and Tourrettes - both villages with their lovely restaurants (some with Michelin mention), bars and fete’s are in walking distance.

Then you can do gliding, paragliding, horse riding, fishing, wind surfing, pedallo’s, trekking, hilltop cycling, etc, within 5-15 minutes away.

We dare say that Villa Cambaras is one of the more unique properties available for rent in the part of Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur where you have easy access to both the mountains, the vineyards and the Riviera. A definite experience.

Our house manager speaks English and is on call to help out.

Brief facts:

- 5 bedrooms, sleeps 10 adults och 12 in total.

- Large 15 x 5 metres exercise pool.

- Modern kitchen.

- 4 bathrooms.

- Air condition in the conservatory and the stone barn studio.

- Pool alarm system - however children must at all time be attended to.

- The stone barn garden studio can be used for small conferences/seminars/exhibitions.

- Pre-arrival and departure cleaning and laundry.

We can also arrange:

- Daily house keeping.

- A private chef.

- Cooking courses.

- Wine tasting and walk around our next door wine estate.

We also rent out the property off-season. The property is a all-year-around-home and perfect if you want to take a sabbatical or a long break from September until end-May. It works for families too. The village primary school is just across the park and children at the right age are generally welcome. Wintertime the added advantage is the closeness to the Southern Alps ski resorts.

Please also check out owners website www.cambaras.com for news, more photo's, owners blog and more reviews.

Feel free to call me, 09.00- 22.00 New York time.

Now you want to know who we are and why we own this beautiful old lady. Well, its a long story, but to cut it short we searched long and hard before we settled for a property in the south of France for pragmatic reasons. Myself and my wife have been foreign correspondents in mostly sunny climates for most of our careers so after many years of searching we found that Provence was the best place for us. Being Swedish and Irish this was our compromise, if you can call it that.

Christer Pettersson purchased this chateau / country house in 2010

We wanted a property filled with history, a house with a soul - we have always loved charming old mansions and in fact we have only owned properties with historical significance - and Cambaras fits that bill too, it is not 'just' a  holiday home. We wanted to have the option to move here one day, if our job commitments allowed. In my case I am a writer and journalist I am living at Cambaras for longer stretches every now and then.

The fact is that we were completely enchanted, obsessed even, so we fell for this romantic little chateau style house - this Italian styled beauty was in fact a holiday retreat of its time as it was built by most probably a Italian chateau to cater for hunting and pleasure -  with sensual frescoes on the ceilings, lavender blue Provençal shutters, trompe l'oeil facade and entertainment terrace. We could envisage how Italian aristocrats and after them Napoleon's General Fabre, who built Chateau du Puy in the Tourrettes hilltop (our bedroom view), used Cambaras as a hideout, and how men and mistresses entertained themselves royally here less than 200 years ago. Nothing we had seen until then in Provence came anywhere near Cambaras. Most of the homes were nice holiday homes but most of the time without the soul and purpose we were searching for.

The third criteria was that our children, 17 and 22 at the time, would warm to it - and they did! They would never go for an isolated house in the middle of 'nowhere'. They want to be able to walk to the action, restaurants, bars and village 'fetes' that is. Then the property is large enough for as and for our children to invite lots of friends and be able to entertain.

It almost did not happen. We spent a whole holiday searching for our dream house. We were booked to fly home the next day when the agent said he wanted to test one other property that he originally thought was too big. So he did and the rest is history.

Cambaras is an unusual historic gem with easy access to all the pleasures in Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur.

"Heavenly relaxation in Paradise"

My wife and eight of our friends from Florida and Switzerland recently spent one week in this fabulous home. We were greeted by the caretaker and his wife and were shown the property with all it's amenities (large beautifully maintained pool, fully equipped kitchen, comfortable bedrooms, large dining room, comfortable living room, clean bathrooms and a fantastic patio with a large table and many chairs). The Caretaker took us to a local garden to show us the vegetables and advised us where the bakeries and supermarkets were located (all within a few minutes drive. We had a fantastic time and are talking about repeating our experience next year! The area itself is just gorgeous, the locals are very friendly and Fayence is a beautiful small town about 5 minutes from the house.

As romantic as promised

  • Review Submitted: 04-Dec-2012
  • Date of Stay: Aug 2011
We really enjoyed staying at Cambaras, it is such a lovely estate, just as romantic, private and filled with history as promised. The furnishing is beautiful and lot of attention to detail have been put in - there were a few things that could be added, e g an out door grill. Way above what is normal for holiday homes. We also appreciated the surroundings, both Fayence and Torrettes were visible from our bedroom and we loved the bird life and the gliders circling above us. It is quite a steep walk up to the villages from the house though so either take the bicycles or drive up the hill, its a 2 min drive, if you are not in exercise mood. We will definitely come back. Cambaras is an absolute find, either to just stay and relax or go on trips to St Raphael or St Tropez (the latter is hard work though and you are likely to get stuck in the St Tropez traffic). Thank you!

A wow place

This is totally a wow place! Beautiful setting, beautiful property between gorgeous hills with villages, fields and amongst the pine trees. The pool is incredible -- laps easy with it's length and lounging great in the sun. The house is very well set up - well furished, beautiful hand-embrodiered sheets, a good kitchen and... a wonderfully canopied terrace for meals outside.

The area is wonderful - with great restaurants and within easy reach of many sites. Just the perfect relaxation we needed!

Villa Cambaras is easy to reach, 45 minutes from Nice International Airport. Take the A8 motorway towards Cannes and Frejus, look out for exit 39 towards Fayence. Cambaras is 10 min passed a popular lake, Lac St Cassian.

Our part of Provence is right in the midst of the vineyards, the olive plantations, the Southern Alps, the Cote d’Azur beaches, medevial villages and hamlets.

The Domaine Grand Bastide, a fine producer of red, white and rosé wines, is our next door neighbour. Walk through the park to the right and the wine shop is around the corner.

There are a number of restaurants with Michelin mentions, e g Le Castelleras, Le France and Le Huit, a brisk walk or cycle up the hill to, plus many bars and up there in the lively village of Fayence.

Far from the madding crowds you can still discover fine sandy beaches tucked away in the Esterel nature reserve, just 30 minutes from Cambaras.

Lac St. Cassien offers water-sport and is a top fresh water angling spot. There are walks from Fayence through the oak forests of Mons, the Saignole Gorge and the cliff of St Cezaire.

If you want to do sailing, you can rent different size boats and there are also sailing schools al the year around in Mandelieu-la-Napoule and in St Raphael.

Fayence is the European Mecca for gliding and its possible to both do gliding courses and to get up in a glider for a birds eye view over valley.

Golf: Terre Blanche has two of Europe's most exclusive, scenic golf courses. There are many other golfing opportunities in other nearby villages, such as Bergamo, as well.

The nearest large ski resort is less then 1 hour away: Greolieres Les Neiges has 22 slopes, 30 km of skiing. There are many more slopes also for the more advanced skiers in the South Alps.
