IDYLLIC RURAL COTTAGE NEAR LA ROCHELLE COAST, OWN POOL, WIFI AND SATELLITE TV

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Saint-Jean-d'Angely area - Joie de Vivre

Lovely well-equipped house with pool, between La Rochelle and Cognac.

Joie de Vivre is a lovely 2 bedroom house with its own pool, between La Rochelle and Cognac, sleeping 5-7. In a small, friendly hamlet close to the pretty River Boutonne and a farm, surrounded by fields of maize and sunflowers, it combines rural tranquility with easy access to great beaches, towns, attractions and shops. La Rochelle, Saintes, the Gironde and Ile de Re are all within easy reach. Nearby St Jean D'Angely has lovely restaurants, shops and a fantastic market. The cottage has traditional beams and stone walls plus a modern, light interior and well-equipped kitchen. The sunny patio has an outside dining table, 18'5' x 12'6' new swimming pool, barbeque, sun-loungers, umbrellas, lilos and 7 bikes. The house has all you will need for a relaxing holiday - computer, Wifi, DVDs, games, books, maps, English TV, i-Pod deck, hairdryers, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, travel cot, high chair and toys. No hidden costs - cleaning, utilities and use of bedding and towels all included.

There are only about ten houses in the hamlet, some occupied all year round and some holiday homes, with friendly English and French neighbours. It is a quiet hamlet with very little traffic - a truly relaxing rural idyll.

The Charente Maritime has a beautiful coastline with many beach resorts, lovely ancient towns and attractive countryside full of vines and sunflowers. Medieval Saint Jean D'Angely, the nearest town, has a big swimming complex, lively market and lovely shops and restaurants. The house is not far from the coast and is central to many attractions, so there is easy access to many interesting places. Highlights are the lovely beaches of the Gironde estuary; the oyster beds, restaurants and beaches at Fouras; lively and beautiful La Rochelle; the distilleries and vineyards of Cognac and the fantastic Roman arena at Saintes. There's also the lovely River Charente; the aquarium at La Rochelle; the zoo at La Palmyre and the miles of dedicated cycle paths and lovely beaches and restaurants of the fashionable Ile de Re. The Ile D'Oleron and Ile D'Aix also have lovely beaches and many attractions, and Rochefort has a famous armoury and docks. Lovers of history will enjoy the many ancient buildings and the churches on the medieval pilgrim route to Spain and there's a children's boating lake at St Savinien. On the Gironde coast there are lovely wild beaches of endless sand dunes plus the resorts, lovely cliffs, watersports and amusements at St Palais, Meschers, Royan, Talmont and La Palmyre.

Lovely and lively La Rochelle is not to be missed - it has an historic 17-18th century centre and beautiful waterfront and lots to do. You can walk around the lively port and city walls, laze on the beach, visit fascinating museums, and enjoy the many restaurants and shops. The aquarium is fantastic and the Natural History Museum is also interesting, especially for children.

La Rochelle is a very attractive town with a lively atmosphere at night. As well as the lovely restaurants you might also catch the annual music festival. It's a fun town with many fun things to enjoy, including harbour boat rides and the beach area of Les Minimes.

Close by is the gorgeous and fashionable Ile De Re, famous for its beaches and miles of traffic-free cycle tracks. You can hire bikes easily and spend a day exploring this lovely island. La Rochelle, Ile de Re and Ile D'Oleron can be reached easily from Joie de Vivre, within 40 minutes to an hour.

The Charente Maritime region has its own micro climate and is said to be the second sunniest region in France after the Cote d'Azur, with an average 2300 hours of sunshine a year. The area offers plenty of activities to suit all ages including, fishing, golf, horse riding, cycling, beaches, vineyards, zoos, cognac houses and many beautiful historic towns and villages.

Poitiers is the home of Futuroscope, which offers entertainment for all ages. Saintes is an historic town with a Roman amphitheatre and a beautiful cathedral, it also has a very good golf course. Rochefort is another historic city with much to see including the 'Transpondeur' bridge and the 'Corderie Royale'. There is also the lovely Ile de Re, the Marais Poitevin and Ile D-Oleron - great for beaches, restaurants, cycling, walking and boating. More information at http://joiedevivreholidays.wordpress.com/

Peter is a psychologist and consultant and Lindsey is a journalist and writer. Peter was born in Scotland and Lindsey was born in Surrey. We live in the New Forest and have two lovely grown up daughters.

We love Joie de Vivre and the Charente Maritime and enjoy it when our guests have happy holidays there too.

Lindsey and Peter Sharp purchased this cottage in 2006

We loved the house as soon as we saw it. Our guests tell us they also enjoy the tranquillity, the farm with its fields of sunflowers and cows, the cycle rides by the river, and the fact that it is very easy to get to lots of interesting places from the house, such as beaches, markets and lovely restaurants. Children and families really enjoy having their own pool (and we built the new one in 2013) and all the nearby attractions. Guests say the house is lovely and several say it is the best-equipped they've stayed in. Check out the wonderful reviews, and we have repeat guests which tells you a lot. Come and share 'Joie de Vivre!

We think it's important for guests to feel comfortable in a holiday home, and to be able to travel light. So we provide as much as possible in the house and are happy for our guests to use everything that's there. We want our guests to have a really enjoyable holiday at Joie de Vivre and we do our best to make it lovely for them. Mel looks after our house, and helps guests when needed, and we have friendly neighbours too. See also http://joiedevivreholidays.wordpress.com/

From the Joie de Vivre guestbook (26 July - 9th August 2013):
The house was gorgeous and had everything we need. Our highlights have been: St Savinien boating with the kids, St Jean D'angely at the water park, mini-golf and lido, and the pedalos! La rochelle, Le Petit Train... weather has been amazing, had all we needed. It has been so nice to slow down and enjoy our family.

Posted in the Joie de Vivre guestbook (12 - 26 July 2013):
We enjoyed a wonderful holiday here, thank you. We got very warm and hot weather - over 30 degrees most days - only one day of rain. We shopped in Rochefort while it rained and ended up going to Fouras when it cleared and then home for a DVD. We spent many days at the beach in Fouras - as the girls took a shine to the seawater pool at the beach. It allows one to swim even if the tide is out. It was probably the favourite spot this holiday. We spent a day on the Ilr d'Oleron in Marennes and enjoyed viewing the oyster beds and beach. Brouge deserves an afternoon - lots to interest those who like arts & crafts. We enjoyed our relaxed breakfasts outside, regular trips to the beach and our cycle to the lock and on to Tonnay Butonne, and to Torxe along the river and back. We saw 2 young deer across the river. We loved the beautifuly scenery on the cycles & the warm evening air against our faces.

The house is most compfortable. It is great to find it so well-equipped - it is great to know everything is there if you need it.

Posted in the Joie de Vivre guestbook (May - June 2013):
The house is amazing - everything you could possibly need, very cosy and Lindsey from the moment of booking & throughout has felt like a friend, or me as part of her family - so many thanks.
We did the Ile d'Oleron, Fouras, La Rochelle, Rochefort, St Jean, Cognac, Saintes. We spent a super day at Fouras - loved it.Also Ile d'Oleron where we had a good lunch. Did the tour of Otard Distillery at Cognac - remember to book. Market at St Jean (Wed & Sat) was buzzing, but even better at the market in La Rochelle on Saturday. We had lunch from The Boat, next to the boats - really fresh seafood.

Saintes was beautiful, we were amazed by the amphitheatre and the setting of the town on the river - very beautiful. Splendid lunch at Rochefort.
Too many good experiences to mention. All in all a wonderful holiday, hopefully repeated.

Fantastic week - from the house guestbook

  • Review Submitted: 23-Nov-2012
  • Date of Stay: Jul 2012
A fantastic week at Joie de Vivre! The weather was wonderful so had a couple of days relaxing at the house and the pool was great for cooling off in the heat. Was great to have bikes to try - both of us enjoyed this after not cycling in such a long time. We had day trips to Fouras, St Jean D'Angely market day, St Savinien, Coulon (green Venice) classified as one of the prettiest villages in France, and it was lovely. The kids particularly enjoyed the miniature boats at St Savinien and a highlight was boating at Coulon. Thank you for letting us stay in the property, it really was fab! Had everything you could need & super location.

Notes:
The decor is light, bright, clean and modern, with original beams and stone walls. The house has a sunny aspect and a relaxed, comfortable ambiance. It is well stocked with all the utensils and facilities you will need for a happy and relaxing holiday. The hamlet is very tranquil and has only around 10 houses, some occupied all year round and some holiday homes, so you will have plenty of peace and quiet. The English and French neighbours are also friendly and unintrusive. The house is a traditional cottage with an open layout downstairs, and the semi-open stairway may be unsuitable for the infirm. Please note that there are also some low beams upstairs. There is a log burning stove and radiators, making it cosy for winter. Our guests have been very complimentary about the house, facilities, peaceful location and ease of access to attractions. There is little traffic as the house is on a quiet, no through lane leading to a cow barn with cows, fields and the river. English TV.
