LOVELY RURAL RELAXING HOUSE NEAR LA ROCHELLE COAST, OWN POOL AND WIFI

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Saint-Jean-d'Angely area - Joie de Vivre

Lovely well-equipped house with pool, between La Rochelle and Cognac.

Relax and unwind in this lovely rural house, surrounded by a farm and fields of sunflowers and vines. Joie de Vivre is a pretty 2 bedroom house with its own pool, between La Rochelle and Cognac, sleeping 5-7. It’s in a small friendly hamlet close to the River Boutonne, so there’s very little traffic. Although very peaceful the coast and attractions are not far away so it’s easy to get to great beaches and towns such as La Rochelle, Saintes, the Gironde and Ile de Re. Nearby St Jean D'Angely has lovely restaurants, shops and a fantastic twice-weekly market. Inside the house is modern and well-equipped, with traditional beams and stone walls plus a light, bright interior. If you want to relax at home the sunny patio has an outside dining table, 18'5' x 12'6' swimming pool, barbeque, sun-loungers, and umbrellas. You can explore the surrounding hills, fields and farm or cycle by the river. The house has all you will need for an enjoyable holiday - computer, Wifi, DVDs, games, books, maps, English TV, i-Pod, hairdryers, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, travel cot, high chair, 7 bikes and toys. No hidden costs - cleaning, utilities and use of bedding and towels all included. More information at http://joiedevivreholidays.wordpress.com/

Suitability:
  • not suitable for elderly or infirm

Guestbook comments from the owner
From the Joie de Vivre guestbook (26 July - 9th August 2013):

The house was gorgeous and had everything we need. Our highlights have been: St Savinien boating with the kids, St Jean D'angely at the water park, mini-golf and lido, and the pedalos! La rochelle, Le Petit Train... weather has been amazing, had all we needed. It has been so nice to slow down and enjoy our family.

Peter is a psychologist and consultant and Lindsey is a journalist and writer. We live in the New Forest and have two lovely grown up daughters.

We love Joie de Vivre and the Charente Maritime and enjoy it when our guests have happy holidays there too.

Lindsey and Peter Sharp purchased this cottage in 2006

We loved the house as soon as we saw it. Our guests tell us they enjoy the tranquillity, the farm with its fields of sunflowers and cows, the cycle rides by the river, and the fact that it is very easy to get to lots of interesting places from the house, such as beaches, markets and lovely restaurants. Children and families really enjoy having their own pool (and we built the new one in 2013) and all the nearby attractions. Guests say the house is lovely and several say it is the best-equipped they've stayed in. Check out the wonderful reviews to find out more. Enjoy a warm welcome at Joie de Vivre.

We think it's important for guests to feel comfortable in a holiday home, and to be able to travel light. So we provide as much as possible in the house for you to use. We want our guests to have a really enjoyable holiday at Joie de Vivre and we do our best to make it lovely for them. Mel looks after our house, and helps guests when needed, and we have friendly neighbours too. See also http://joiedevivreholidays.wordpress.com/

PLEASURE TO HOLIDAY HERE

  • 5 out of 5
We returned for our second visit to Joie de Vivre and once again had a wonderful time. Both the house and area have so much to offer. Beautiful beaches, our favourites at St Palais sur Mer and Fouras. La Rochelle and its amazing Aquarium. The Roman Ampitheatre at Saintes is a must visit. We attended an evening concert, inside of it, with the Orchestre Symphonique D'Elves and Grand Choer de l' Abbaye-aux-Dames. The Ile d'Oleron (visit the Chassiron lighthouse) and Ile de Re are well worth a visit for the day. The list is endless.
The house has a lovely relaxing atmosphere and the bonus of a pool. It's very well equipped with all the practical items as well as books, dvd's, candles etc.
A massive thank you once again to the owners, Lindsey and Peter, for sharing this first class holiday home - a true home from home.

FANTASTIC!

  • 5 out of 5
We have just spent a fabulous two weeks at Joie de Vivre with our young children and would highly recommend it. The property is lovely with plenty of space, a great pool, a well-stocked kitchen, friendly neighbours (hi Mocha!) and all the creature comforts you expect in your own home.

The whole experience, from the initial enquiry through to booking and help during our stay, was so easy. Lots of information was provided and a cot and highchair were supplied with no fuss - the house also has toys and games there. And even with the fantastic surroundings, having access to CBeebies on satellite was a godsend!

Visits to local towns, attractions, beaches etc was very easy by car - the area is very beautiful and we found lots to do (Saintes was especially good).

Joie de Vivre was a fantastic find for us - because of the owners' welcoming approach and the amazing surroundings it felt as if we were staying with friends.

JUST WONDERFUL

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at this property in late June and cannot rate it highly enough. The kitchen is fully-equipped and the local farmers' market just superb - a perfect combination. The house is decorated beautifully in fresh, light colours and it's obvious that the owners Lindsey and Peter genuinely want their guests to have the best holiday possible, from fluffy duvets to kids toys and more. The surrounding towns make for great exploring, and La Rochelle offers many restaurants, fabulous boutiques and a fascinating history. The house was scrupulously clean upon our arrival and looked even better than the photos. Customer service could not be better. Thanks for a great holiday!

GREAT PLACE TO CHILL OUT AND UNWIND

  • 5 out of 5
Fantastic location, with the local town 5 minutes by car and La Rochelle, Rockfort and Saintes all within half an hour drive. You will need a car to get around. Set in beautiful countryside, with a farm only a stones throw away. Ideal for 2 couples or a family.
The house was fully equipment with everything you could possibly need. Very clean. Nice size master bedroom.
If you want to chill out and do nothing this is the place to stay, however if you want a fun filled activity packed holiday this is also a great location.

JOIE DE VIVRE - VERY IDYLLIC GITE

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed for 1 week at this lovely place - simply too short for all of us. We really enjoyed the peaceful and well-equipped gite. Everything was fine - kids (and ourselves) relaxed at pool and stayed as much time as we had outside. No noise just birds and Mocha - neigbours nice little dog. Gite is lovely equipped - everything there for preparation of tasty French/English/German food. Can highly recommend this place and hope to come back soon.

REVIEW OF JOIE DE VIVRE

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed for a week in this gîte, between late June and early July 2008, and highly enjoyed the experience. It is situated near the town of St Jean d’Angely; deep in the heart of beautiful countryside, but close enough to main roads that enable you to explore the Charente-Maritime region with ease. It provides a well-equipped and comfortable abode for your holiday, whether your aim is simply to relax or to enjoy a more active vacation. The garden area in front of the house captures the sun from morning into the evening and has a dining table and chairs, sun loungers and a good-sized plunge-pool for a cooling dip on hot days (we enjoyed temperatures in the 80s). The gîte’s light, cool and well-appointed modern interior has a comfortable living room, a large well-equipped kitchen, two double bedrooms and a bathroom. The surrounding countryside provides plenty of opportunities for pleasant walks. The English and French neighbours we encountered were friendly and unintrusive. The dog of one family, made us feel very welcome, gave us a guided tour of neighbouring fields, and kept us entertained. The highlights of our wider expeditions included the rolling Charente countryside and its many picturesque villages, replete with pretty houses adorned with the red-tiled roofs and light-blue window-shutters so characteristic of the region; the numerous well-preserved eleventh- and twelfth-century Romanesque churches (those at Aulnay, Surgeres, St-Eutrope Saintes and Talmont being particularly stunning); the medieval abbeys of Fontdouce, St Vincent de Nieul-sur-l’Autize, aux Dames at Saintes, Sablonceaux and, near Poitiers, the unforgettable Nouaille Maupertuis; the beautiful seaside village of Talmont, resplendent with its cliff-edge medieval church, huge hollyhocks and white-washed cottages; the attractive river-front at Coulon; the coast above St Palais-sur-Mer and at Fouras, with its sweeping beaches and iconic carrelets; the magisterial harbour at La Rochelle; and the delicious food and friendly service at restaurant Le Scorlion in St Jean d’Angely. In short, gîte ‘Joie de Vivre’ lived up to its name and provided, in our experience, an excellent base for a really enjoyable and enduringly memorable holiday. As a bonus, its owners were not only very helpful but refreshingly relaxed.

Notes:
The decor is light, bright, clean and modern, with original beams and stone walls. The house has a sunny aspect and a relaxed, comfortable ambiance. It is well stocked with all the utensils and facilities you will need for a happy and relaxing holiday. The hamlet is very tranquil and has only around 10 houses, some occupied all year round and some holiday homes, so you will have plenty of peace and quiet. The English and French neighbours are also friendly and unintrusive. The house is a traditional cottage with an open layout downstairs, and the semi-open stairway may be unsuitable for the infirm. Please note that there are also some low beams upstairs. There is a log burning stove and radiators, making it cosy for winter. Our guests have been very complimentary about the house, facilities, peaceful location and ease of access to attractions. There is little traffic as the house is on a quiet, no through lane leading to a cow barn with cows, fields and the river. English TV.
