Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday apartment in Capitol Hill - 2nd Story at Home on the Hill

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-5)

Only one week left in March/April: be in touch if you want March 29-April 5. Looking for dates between March 15 and May 10? My 2nd Story is booked, but try my first floor unit: 357360, I have some space left there! City living and an organic environment make this apartment the perfect experience—right in the historic district of Capitol Hill, in the prestigious Lincoln Park neighborhood, a short walk or bike to everything! This charming 1912 corner row house is a historic renovated corner barbershop, with a private entrance, 900 square feet of sunny living space with high ceilings, full sunlight through nine large windows that face east, south and west.??The apartment has all bamboo floors; new kitchen with stainless appliances, recycled-paper countertops, and cabinets made of local wood; big bath with tumbled marble tile and new sink, toilet and tub/shower, extra-capacity front loading washer-dryer; a large private bluestone patio with eating area; organic herb garden outside your front door; organic vegetable garden (help yourself) next to patio; a shed with 4 bikes; organic bedding; plant-filled windowsills; complimentary natural bath products and organic pantry items. ??There is a bus stop on the block, and it is a ten-minute walk to the orange-line metro at Eastern Market and then just one stop to the Capitol and the beginning of the Smithsonian Mall. Take a ten to twenty minute walk to a variety of neighborhoods (including Barracks Row, Eastern Market, Pennsylvania Ave, Lincoln Park and more) that offer shops, restaurants, and services. If you love to walk, take a leisurely stroll through the historic houses and gardens of East Capitol Street and arrive at the doorstep of the Capitol. We also have bicycles for you to use-- a fun and free way to tour the city, if you are so inclined!??Step outside to stroll the quiet, charming, and safe neighborhood, or picnic on our large grassy yard amidst the scent of lilacs and forsythia. Explore the great neighborhood, which offers a wide-open tree-lined green space as well as an upscale restaurant and corner market that features Polyface Farms meats and more. Great restaurant options are everywhere-- and you can walk a few blocks to shop for groceries at Yes Organic Market and Eastern Market, plus full-size grocery store six blocks away. Take pleasure in the kind of neighborhood experience that Capitol Hill will offer at every turn.??The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful at night. Adding to your comfort: yoga mat and instructional DVDs, organic cotton sheets, a special shower head to filter out the chlorine, organic cotton towels, a filtered water pitcher for pure drinking water, and leafy-green plants to naturally cleanse toxins from the air. You will breathe easy, stay healthy, and rest well here.??There's also the convenience of wireless internet access, a printer/scanner/copier, unlimited local and long-distance calling, a flat-panel TV with cable and DVD player, and a diverse selection of DVDs.

I've lived for 20 years in DC area, the past 8 on Capitol Hill, and have worked at the Library of Congress and other government and non-profit arts organizations. I love all the free arts and culture in DC! I'm happy to offer bike tours of Capitol Hill.

Jo Rasi purchased this apartment in 2004

This house (walking distance to tourist spots and more) is a rare find in DC: a corner property with no abutting houses on three sides, so lots of windows that are open to light and air, and surrounded by a large yard and patio. The enclosed yard has an organic garden-- help yourself to all kinds of herbs and more while you stay. Bikes, parking, lots of closet space, washer-dryer, and walking distance to so much to do and see.

Large gorgeous patio for grilling (gas grill) and eating outside; safe well-lighted neighborhood; strolling to parks, restaurants and the National Mall; high ceilings; big windows; lots of flowering trees and great gardens.

Jo was the perfect host! Very generous and thought of everything we might need. The place is very well stocked, close to everything, and like being at home. There were 6 of us (2 adults and 4 children). The place slept 5 of us very comfortably but we brought an air mattress for a 6th person and it worked out perfectly!

I just spent eight nights in the second-floor rental with my husband and two kids, ages 12 and 14. I highly recommend it. It's clean, sunny and exceptionally well-appointed. The high-end kitchen has olive oil, condiments, sandwich bags, spices, a dishwasher -- everything you need. The rental also has an iron, a hair dryer, a washer and dryer, a lovely private patio and even parking if you need it. Two chairs in the living room fold out into twin beds. Jo was terrific to deal with.

We had a blast riding the bikes over to Capitol Hill and around to some of the monuments. (Note: nearby East Capitol Street has a bike lane all the way to the Capitol.) They were great for reaching monuments that would otherwise be a long walk, such as the Jefferson and FDR memorials.

It's fun to "live" in a neighborhood among locals. It's a real respite at the end of a busy day. It's slightly far from metro stops -- about a 15- to 20-minute walk through a nice area to the Eastern Market Station -- but if you get a Smartrip card, you can also use it on buses from just a block or two away. They zip right to the Capitol, the Ford's Theater area and other sites. We ended up using a combo of bikes, metro and buses and got around great. The rental also has a Safeway about six blocks away. And try the pizza at the takeout place just a block away -- it's good and very affordable.

Above all: This place is a terrific value. For the price of a moderate D.C. hotel room, you get a whole apartment in a nice, quiet area with a kitchen, outdoor space and use of bikes. Being able to make some of your own meals will save you a fortune -- D.C. restaurants are spendy. You can't beat it.

Clean and Comfortable!

We stayed seven 7 nights and enjoyed the experience. Though we were snowed in a few days, the place was cozy, clean and relaxing. Jo checked in with us, provided some nice organic snacks, and was quick to respond to our needs. Parking was challenging at times, perhaps worse than normal due to the inclimate weather (no cars moved from the street for a few days). We would definitely rent this property again and rcommend it to others.

We stayed for over a month at this wonderful home. Owner provided everything, extra sheets, utensils and plate ware, cookware, cable tv. We felt comfortable very quickly. We felt very safe about the neighborhood too. We have a two year old. Was within walking distance to eastern market. And really not that far from the Capitol on a nice day. Owner really too care to make sure our stay was satisfactory. They went the extra mile. Parking pass is provided which is a big deal! Thanks so much!

Downstairs apt. served our needs well

We visited for Spring Break. There are five of us: two adults and 15, 12 and 10 year old. I'm glad we brought our twin air mattress as that gave each kid their own bed to sleep on. The apartment was clean and well cared for---perfect for our needs, and Jo was very accommodating and helpful. We were able to catch a bus almost right outside our door to take us to the Metro, but the walk to the Stadium Metro was also not too far (15 mins? - We did that once when it snowed and the buses weren't running.). Hence, the location is convenient. The neighborhood is very quiet and comfortable. There is a Safeway within walking distance (4-5 blocks, 20 mins?). Parking was not difficult to find on the street (free with a permit that Jo provides). The kitchen is stocked with everything you might need and lots of items in the cupboards that folks share. There are lots of board games, access to wi-fi, TV, DVD player and reading material. We really felt we had an excellent DC experience with little to no hassle. I would highly recommend this VRBO and would love to stay here again.
