Self-catering, ground floor apartment . Off road parking. Private garden. The apartment is located in the town of Le Château at the southern end of the island, just 5 mins by car from the bridge and ten/twenty mins walk to the local shops, supermarket, restaurants, market, port and beach. The apartment is fully equipped to a high standard and bed linen and bath towels are available upon request for an additional fee. The apartment has TV and WIFI Internet access, BBQ, garden table, chairs for 4, 2 sunbeds.

MicroClimate and Oysters: A local micro climate ensures the region is the second sunniest in France. The beaches are beautiful and natural, protected by dunes backed by immense pine forests. This makes Oléron a lovely place to walk and enjoy nature, whether it be a mushroom picking jaunt in the autumn, or simply a summer stroll through the pine forests and along the beautiful beaches. Since oyster farming is traditionally the islands largest economy, there are various tourist attractions centred around this, like trips out on to the east coast marshes at low tide and, of course oyster detestation restaurants. The famous oyster marshes are recognisable throughout the island and are surrounded by colourful huts, working and artisan, which bring artists and seafood lovers from all over the place. Keeping in this style you will find that the whole island is full of amazing seafood restaurants and bars to help you while away the activities of your day. You can find all types of restaurant on the island.

You can find all types of restaurant on the island; from basic little oyster huts that serve the simplest, most delicious oysters you’ve ever tasted, fresh from the marshes, to Italian, Thai, organic vegetarian Indian to high class gastronomic French cuisine. Wherever you go you will usually find a good menu and plenty of fresh fish! There is a list of recommended local restaurants in the apartment.

Le Chateau- Things to do: There is a lovely planted mini golf course as well as public petang or ‘french boules’ pitches in the town. Also on a Sunday morning in Le Chateau you will find all the delights of the biggest market on the island, bringing people from all the localities all year round. Le Chateau also boasts a lovely newly renovated port and marina, full of restaurants and artisans huts offering everything from langoustines, to hand made home furnishings and beautiful jewellery. Next to the port is the historic Citadel, an original Vauban fortress dating back to the 17th century, but now more commonly used to host jazz festivals, art exhibitions or fireworks displays. There is also a nice beach in the town with a sea water swimming pool during the summer to enable swimming at low tide and safe swimming for the little ones. Although the east coast beaches aren’t quite as typically beautiful as the west coast ones, they are certainly quaint and the sea is always warmer here than the Atlantic coast.

Our apartment has 2 bedrooms and sleeps up to 6 (4 preferred) It comprises a healthy living space with hemp insulation and wooden panelled walls and ceiling and natural chaux decoration, which is both attractive and breathable. The main room and bathroom are tiled and the bedrooms are covered with a natural vegetable based flooring called sisal. The result is a cosy, modern, well insulated apartment that is cool in summer and warm in winter. At present the garden is natural with holly hocks and flowers. The apartment sleeps 4-6 in master bedroom with a double bed and large wardrobe, 2nd bedroom with bunk beds and a convertible corner settee in the salon. There is a modern bathroom with a massage jet shower and a 2nd separate WC. The living room comprises a well equipped kitchen with French doors opening on to a sunny, South West facing garden with patio, BBQ, tables and seating for 6, 2 sun beds with cushions, attached sunshade, washing line and garden games for children.

About Sarah Harris/ Blanc

We're a little family of four, who welcome other families with or without children. Jean-Yves is a local surf instructor who works with kids at Vert Bois beach and Sarah is an English teacher, working part time in Royan and from home. Iyla is 1 and loves to play! Sarah is originally from Bournemouth on the south coast of England and Jean-Yves is from the island. We have both travelled a fair bit around the world and love meeting new people.

Stayed for a week in August 2009 with two teenagers and had a great time. Perfect for a family holiday. The apartment was very clean, well equipped and in a good location. Supermarket was just down the road. Different beach every day. Great food. Owner was welcoming and helpful.

The apartment was well furnished & had everything we needed as a family. The kids loved the books & games in the bunk room, & it was wonderful to have the garden for al fresco dining & running around. The location was ideal - walking distance to the market/restaurants etc. Sarah was a fantastic help with lots of advice on where to go & places to eat. Would definitely recommend!

Great base for a family holiday

Great location, perfect for a family of 4 with all the amenities you need. A short drive to beaches, easy walk to market, shops and cafes. Outdoor eating area is great and garden was well used. Owners were very friendly and helpful giving us lots of tips about where to visit and things to do. Would recommend this property without hesitation.

The house was clean and very well equipped.

The property is ideally situated for the supermarket and the town. The area around the house is a very quiet residential area. There are several nice restaurants in the town. There are some interesting and pretty villages to visit, nice beaches. Our host was helpful and friendly but never intrusive. We had a really lovely relaxing holiday there.

Sarah, Jean Yves and Iyla were the perfect hosts. Weather changeable but were still unable to leave the island to go sightseeing on the mainland, because the island is so lovely, even when its not basking in blazing sunshine. Oléron island is only 1 hour from La Rochelle and with an Atlantic and east coast as well as a labyrinth of sea water channels that run through the island, it is perfect for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. The beaches are beautiful and natural, protected by dunes backed by pine forests. There is so much to do on Oleron, that your most difficult decision will be what to do on this holiday and what to save till next year! There are surf, sailing, windsurfing and other beach sport schools on several beaches. Other activities include cycling, inter-island boat cruises around the surrounding islands and Fort Boyard, water park, museums, night markets, live music, fireworks, festivals, fishing trips, oyster marsh tours, history walks etc. Le Chateau, with its port and Vauban Citadel, is full of brilliant seafood restaurants and bars as well as artisan huts selling art and pottery. The town has a full animation calendar for summer, so there is something going on all the time.
