Christmas at the Hayloft

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 19 August 2012 Date of Stay: December 2011
I'm rather late in submitting this review. It's currently August 2012 - we stayed at the Hayloft over Christmas 2011. I found myself thinking of our stay again and thought I would finally submit a review after never quite getting round to it for months! The owners, Richard and Marieke, really made us feel at home, setting up a Christmas tree for us and giving us some wine. It's a quiet retreat and a thoughtfully restored spacious area to live in for a little while. It was formerly an artist's studio, and there is an unfussy calmness to the place, with the wooden floors, solid furniture and the light from the roof windows. Everything had been thought of for us, such as a few food extras on top of the usual basics. There were some fresh flowers from the garden too. We also enjoyed wandering in the grounds and up to see the site of Maiden Castle, an Iron Age fort which also has a Roman history, only a few minutes walk away. The owners' home is fairly close to the barn, but this wasn't a problem at all - we felt relaxed and had plenty of privacy. We will hopefully be back soon! Vic and Thad.

Everything on your doorstep

4 out of 5
Review Submitted: 04 June 2012 Date of Stay: May 2012
I would definitely recommend a stay at the Hayloft. My husband and I have just returned from our week holiday in Dorset. The Hayloft is exactly as pictured and as described, set in beautiful surroundings. The owner's walled garden is lovely and we were lucky enough to have amazing weather so took advantage of the pool every day (what a bonus for the good price).
You definitely feel that you're in a rural location with so much wildlife nearby. Within the surrounding lanes and fields there were badgers, rabbits, deer, owls and other birds of prey. The short walk up to Maiden Castle is a must. Having been to a number of castles sitting on mounds in the past, this iron age fort simply takes your breath away due to it's size and scale. It's a great vantage point for views.
We normally holiday in Scotland and so were surpised how we could fill everyday with activities nearby. We didn't even use a full tank of petrol. Our favourite village was Cerne Abbas, it was charming. After a few pics of the giant on the hill we took a short walk round the village to see the old Abbey. Other places we enjoyed within easy reach were Poole (the futhest at a 40 minute drive), Swanage, Wareham, Weymouth, Dorchester for market day and Portland. There is a great walk which follows the costal path around Portland and there are some amazing views of the coast from here.
The final place that is an absolute must is the tank museum at Wool. We combined our trip here with a trip to Durdle Door. Be careful at Durdle Door the path is quite steep and loose under foot. Going back to the tank museum, it was my husbands choice and he was happy taking pictures of the hundreds of tanks. I didn't think it was going to be my kind of thing but there were so many other things to look at and information to read I was happy to stay for the 2 hours we were there, in fact I could have stayed longer. The ticket is £12 per adult and is worth every penny. You can return for free within 12 months. I wish we had gone there earlier in our stay because I think we would have gone back later in the week to spend a little longer.

Review of Hayloft

4 out of 5
Review Submitted: 23 April 2012 Date of Stay: March 2012
We had a lovely stay (2 weeks) at the Hayloft. The location of the Hayloft is absolutely perfect. It feels like you are in the midst of rural dorset when in fact you are only 5 minutes from Dorchester and Weymouth.
We enjoyed the peaceful surroundings of the hayloft, especially the walled garden and the children loved the trampoline and meeting the owners (who were very welcoming) pets! The children were even treated to an easter egg hunt by the owners.
The Hayloft is warm and comfortable and it contains everything you need and is really a great place to stay. We will certainly be returning in the summer and are looking forward to using the pool!

Charming and cosy

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 24 December 2011 Date of Stay: October 2011
This is a rustic and cosy property in a very quiet location. Log burner is efficient and furniture comfortable to make evenings relaxing. The gardens are a delight and the pool looked inviting (too chilly for October though!). There are many places of interest to visit nearby and excellent walks on the doorstep.
