Villa Altamira, Vieques

Bedrooms 3
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday villa in Vieques - Villa Altamira

Villa, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Welcome to Villa Altamira! This is your private get-a-way in paradise. Situated on a large private lot with spectacular panoramic views of the ocean, gorgeous sunsets and the distant lights of Puerto Rico. Expansive panoramic ocean views surround you. On clear days you can see the Mainland, St. Thomas and Culebra. You can enjoy the whole house including several decks and outdoor areas for relaxing. The rooftop patio has lots of room to lay out or watch the twinkle of the harbor lights and mainland. The Villa is designed for three level living. Everyone will be able to find a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the view, read or sleep in their hammock outside. For the Winter 2014 Season we have continued to upgrade the Villa. We have just completed a full renovation of the ground floor with new walk-in shower, ceramic tile flooring and stone sink and vanity. Extensive landscaping completed over the last several years is now fully grown and lush. The entire grounds is now enveloped in beautiful tropical vegetation, fruits and flowers. The progress will continue in 2015.

The best about Altamira is the location. You are pretty much close to everything on the island. Walk to Isabella or take a short drive to the best beaches on the island. Want to hit the town no problem. Esperanza and the south side of the island are only a 20 minute drive. Have the best of it all including fun nightlife with lots of activities and restaurants as well as a private villa. Bananas, Lazy Jacks the Malecon not too far. Remember the island is not that big.

A fully private free-form pool with waterfall is great for cooling off. The newly resurfaced pool features accent lighting for lounging in the evenings. Enjoy the cool breeze-filled nights in the fully screened bedrooms. Newly added air conditioning in each bedroom will cool off those particularly hot days. Better yet spend the day and the beach and the afternoons by the pool. Explore the island then return to your home base Villa Altamira.

The Villa's floorplan is explained in detail on our web site www.villaaltamira.com. It is a three level Caribbean style villa with a rooftop patio. The ground floor is a private en-suite style living space with its own entrance. Perfect for family or friends who prefer additional privacy. This level connects to the rest of the villa via outside steps.

The island of Vieques is for those who enjoy pristine uncrowded beaches still unspoiled by crowds of tourists, good local groceries, and stunning natural beauty. The world famous 'Bioluminescent Bay' is a popular nature attraction. Many local restaurants offer wonderful food and entertainment. Night lifers need not apply as there are no casinos or crowds here.

Villa Altamira's architecture is traditional Carribean. The property offers luscious caribbean landscaping and ten-foot high ceilings as well as beautiful Spanish ceramic tile floors. The open, airy feeling of the house is enhanced by the large living room, French doors and expansive 12 X 28 foot outdoor deck and tiered design.

What is best here is that you can enjoy the best of Spanish and Caribbean culture while still feeling safe that you are on US territory. Do not forget all Puerto Ricans are US citizens so no problems with visas, customs or monetary change.

Please visit our own web site below for additional detailed information on the Villa as well as a Frequently Asked Questions pages about ALtamira. JOhn and Karen

Greetings from San Marcos, Texas!

Hello Karen & John,

I just wanted to take a few minutes to say thank you for a wonderful location to have our family get together. The only complaint from all, was that time was too short. The layout of the Villa gave everyone 'their space ' and yet be together. Pineapple stole our grandson heart. He was missing his two cats at home in Madison, WI. Now, he wants to return to the Villa to visit his new best friend.

We will do this again and we will stay at the Villa. I organize trips for women and I think your place would be ideal.

Again, thank you for a wonderful experience, XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

John and Karen purchased this villa in 2002

Why John and Karen chose Vieques

The hilltop location is spectacular. Its close to town yet you feel like you are in your own private tropical paradise.

What makes this villa unique

Lush vegetation. Fruit trees and privacy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi John and Karen,

We have arrived to our little slice of paradise, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. This is a gorgeous house in an amazing location. We are so thankful to you for making this possible for us, and appreciate all the efforts you have made to keep the property so beautiful. We went to Red Beach today, but waited maybe too long as we got there around 1:30 and the sea was a bit rough. Did get to stand and enjoy a school of angel fish for a while. ( : Tomorrow, we are off to Mosquito Pier. Yay!

Annette was great, so welcoming and so helpful. My kids are LOVING the pool, my son LOVES the hammock, and Joe and I LOVE it all. We have found our way into town, but I’d read that there is a small beach close to the house where we can walk down and snorkel. Can you let me know where that is?

Anyway, we have 5 more days of glory, and will be sure to post a glowing review very soon!

Thanks so much,

Great House and location - very well equipped

  • 5 of 5

This was a very nice house for a family with young adults particularly, as there is a separate apartment (air conditioned) attached to the house. Joe from the management firm met us at the airport, arrange a car for us and gave us tips on the island generally. The gardener/lands keeper Bob was very nice and made sure everything was in good working order. The pool is lovely and kept very clean, and the house has everything you need including beach chairs, umbrella, ice chests. The beaches are the best I've seen, and the bio bay a true unique experience - one of the reasons we went to this island and we were not disappointed. The stars at night are very clear given not much light pollution which we loved. I think the house location on the hill cannot be beat - I loved drinking coffee in the morning and a glass of wine in the evening overlooking the ocean. Relaxing! The island is beautiful, not a lot of night life which was perfect for us. The weather very good despite being hurricane season. Although we only stayed three nights we could easily have spent a week here and really enjoyed it. I recommend the house highly to any age group.

We can't say enough good things about the house and the island. The house was very clean and accommodated our group of 10 with lots of elbow room! The property is beautiful with plants, trees, and flowers. It feels private. I loved getting up early to have coffee on the deck with the view of the water. Walking around town was a favorite as well as snorkeling at Mosquito pier. The beaches are amazing and so few people that you feel like you have the beach to yourself. We rented a 4wd Jeep so we could get to some remote beaches. It was hard to leave...

We stayed at villa Altamira for a week, not long enough. The house is great. Clean and comfortable. There were 5 adults and 1 teenager. Plenty of room for all of us to have our own space. The view and pool were fantastic as well as the large porch where we ate breakfast and dinner very day. It was nice to have some staples left in the kitchen, ie: spices, oil, etc..... we left some as well for the next group. Parking was challenging but once we figured it out it went well all week. Annette and Dennis were great, very prompt and friendly. The property is beautifully planted with lovely plants and flowers. Easy walk to town but you will need a car to get around the island. Our 4rd time to the island and we will be back....

Awesome view & great time

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Villa Altimira for for 12 days over the holidays and had a great time in Vieques. We were initially supposed to have another family join us but they dropped out so it was just my wife and I and our 17 and 20 year old daughters. The house is on top of a hill overlooking Isabel and the lighthouse. The decks face west so you get a great view of the sunsets and PR off in the distance. The house is on three levels with bedrooms and baths on all three. Since it was only the four of us we just used the top two floors. My wife and I stayed in the top floor and gave the main floor bedroom to the kids. It was great to have coffee in the morning on the deck and drinks in the evenings watching the sunsets. We used the grill a few nights as we packed some ribeyes down with us and we also went to the fish market right down the hill to get some fresh fish for the grill. The house is nice - not luxurious by any means but it's clean, in a great location and as I mentioned the view is awesome. The house also has some beach chairs and some snorkel equipment you can use. There's wi-fi in the house that I barely used (I needed to unplug) but my kids used it constantly for downloading movies, etc. Annette and Dennis manage the property and they picked us up at the airport and were very helpful throughout the whole trip. I even rented their jeep while we were there. From the house it's a short walk downhill to town. Al's Mar Azul is a great bar for watching the sunsets and football games. There's a couple of Puerto Rican breakfast places that have good food and are inexpensive. There are also a couple of bodega type stores to get whatever you need at. We had dinner at Coqui Fire and Taverna in Isabel (good) and a few places in Esperanza like Bili as well as at the house. We've been to Tortola previously but not to Vieques. We like smaller non-developed islands better than the chainstore mega resort islands. Vieques has no chain stores and about 30 beaches so it was very relaxing. We went to one or two beaches every day. We like Navio the best but you need a jeep to get to it. Sun Bay and Red Beach are also great. Go to Bio Bay on a night with no moon or just a little moon showing. The glow is more subtle than the brochures show it but it's still very cool. We used JAK sports for the kayak tour and they were great. All in all we had a fantastic trip and I would recommend the house to those looking. I also look forward to returning in the future.

Owner's Response: Hi Tom, Thank you so much for your review! The information will be very useful for future guests and returning guests. Thank you for sharing so much of your trip with us. We greatly appreciated having you stay at Altamira. We are sorry that the rest of your group could not join you. We will continue to improve the Villa for 2015. If you or your family have any additional suggestions that you think might make this Villa . Even more special. Please feel free to let us know. We are adding an outdoor and indoor sound system so that you can listen to music by the pool and on the patio. We will be adding more fruit trees. We hope you have a wonderful new year and best wishes to you for health and prosperity. Sincerely, John and Karen

The only bad part was having to leave...

  • 5 of 5

We've been home from our trip to PR for a week, and our week at Villa Altamira is one of the sweetest family memories we'll share for a lifetime. It was me, my husband, a 14 year-old son, and two daughters, 13 and 12. We were in San Juan first for 4 days, and were eager to move to the quiet of Vieques after all the excitement.

We were in NO WAY disappointed by the Villa. Annette met us with an open and welcoming smile. The pictures don't do the place justice, and that hardly EVER happens. It's not that the pictures are bad; it's just that pictures can't capture the comfort and ease the place envelopes you with. It's bright and breezy, so clean, warm, and so well stocked. The views are amazing. The pool is beautiful, clean, and just cool enough to be refreshing without making you shiver. The grounds are covered beautifully with fruit trees (be careful though, I tried to pick a lemon and got stung by a bee!), bougainvillea, banana palms, and more. My girls took the upstairs, gleefully pretending it was their college apartment in NYC (goofy girls). My son grabbed the downstairs room, with the gorgeous bathroom (love the sink and tile). It was a little hard to have him so separate at night (as this space can be rented out separately), but we gave him a phone and had him lock the door. He loved having his own "boy" space. That's a great thing about this property, you really do have SO many spaces to just "be."

Some of our faves of the house: coquis at night, little geckos and iquanas by day, the landscaping, the hammock, the pool, a well-stocked kitchen, the AC in the rooms (it was HOT!), dining on the back deck watching the sun set on the water, drinks on the high deck, the laundry, and all the beach/snorkel gear for your use. Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and after burn lotion, though.

Some of our faves on the island: BIO BAY (magical, you must do it!), snorkeling by the Mosquito Pier (we swam with sea turtles), snorkeling off the side of Cayo Afuero (tours not too expensive), Caracas/Red Beach was my #1, Navio was everyone else's, going down to the fishermen's pier to buy dinner from the fresh catch (saw a HUGE puffer fish in the water), COQUI FIRE PIT (Go and eat carnitas, YUM!), all the markets, Al's for drinks, Oh, and the horses, LOVE the horses, everywhere!

Thanks for making this little slice of paradise available, John and Karen, and for all the love and work you've put into the place. My daughter was right, it was SO hard to leave.

Owner's Response: Hi Vivian, Thank you for such a wonderful review. I am not a good photographer so it is very hard as you say to capture any property and do it justice. I will make sure that Annette and Dennis get your feedback as well. We hope you have a wonderful summer and happy Fourth of July. Please let us know if we can be of service in the future! Best Regards and thank you John and Karen

Wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

The entire experience from booking to check out was a pleasure. John and Karen were easy to work with and they always were very timely with responses. We traveled with 4 adults (2 couples). We used a rental car that Karen and John recommended. It was a pleasure to rent from Jurgen. He was easy to contact, had quick responses and greeted us at our arrival. The property manager, Annette, was professional, friendly and knowledgeable. She was always extremely prompt with answering our emails and texts. She escorted us from Jurgen’s car rental to the villa and provided suggestions for beaches to visit and places to eat. She contacted us prior to our arrival to confirm our dates and ensure that the villa was ready for our stay. We found Villa Altamira well maintained inside and out. It was comfortable, clean, spacious and had everything we needed. The views are amazing, and the pool was a great place to hang out at the end of each day. The Villa is a wonderful place to unwind and relax. We had a great vacation and recommend choosing Villa Altamira. We look forward to returning.
