Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday villa in Mougins - VILLA OLEANDER

Superb accommodation with wonderful views within walking distance of the village

VILLA OLEANDER is a luxury villa with 3 bedrooms (all with en suite bathrooms) in Mougins, sleeping 6-7.

Set within a mature, south-facing Mediterranean garden with breath-taking views over the Old Village (15 mins walk) and the Bay of Cannes. Just 20 minutes from Nice Airport and 6km from Cannes.

The villa has been recently renovated to a superb standard with luxury bathrooms and a designer kitchen.

It is air-conditioned throughout.

The accommodation is arranged over two levels. At ground level we have an open plan kitchen, living room and dining room, and also the first master bedroom from which French doors open out to a large terrace linking to the living areas. Upstairs there is a second master bedroom with two private balconies, and also a third double bedroom.

There is a separate laundry room and also a well equipped games room.

The terraced gardens are beautifully secluded and landscaped including a private heated swimming pool, pool house and full sized boules court.

The views from the house and gardens to the Old Village with the Mediterranean Sea and the Esterel Mountains in the background are truly stunning.

It is this wonderful view that has defined the standard for which we have tried to follow in all that we have done at the villa. ====================================================================================

The villa has undergone complete renovation in recent years including, of course, new bathrooms and kitchen and also new air conditioning.

Most recently our attention turned to upgrading the gardens around our existing mature trees which include olive, eucalyptus, oleander, pine, cedar, apricot, palm and cypress trees.

This started with the laying of our full sized boules court on the lower garden terrace, which is great afternoon fun! Then the creation of a large decked area with a viewing gallery overlooking the boules court for the non-players. The inspiration for the deck is our fabulous palm tree, which makes it the perfect place for relaxing in dappled sunshine on our outdoor lounge furniture.

Next, a Chelsea Flower Showing and Tatton Park gold medal winning team of design and landscapers came over and redesigned, extended and rebuilt the sun and pool terracing. The pool itself was also refurbished and pool heating added. The pool has a safety alarm. At the same time, the main flowerbeds were replanted and incorporated a fully automated, underground irrigation system.

By the pool there is an outdoor shower and a pool house (equipped with WiFi, drinks fridge, sink, music player and seating). The pool house and adjacent area get late sunshine and is wonderfully sheltered making sunbathing still possible in cooler months.

The landscaping team returned the following year to create an area by the boules court to enjoy a game of outdoor table tennis amongst other games. They also added new flowerbeds and linking paths, completing the look with a formal garden in the top corner featuring a semi circular teak bench. This is a perfect area for a quiet moment or coffee and newspapers in the morning sun.

In the last year, the exterior of the house has been completely repainted, our access road has been re-surfaced and our pool has just been re-tiled, demonstrating our commitment to a very high level of maintenance. (November 2014).

The pool and garden are beautifully lit at night time and all these areas can be viewed from a large terrace which wraps around the house where we have an outdoor dining table adjacent to our climbing bougainvillea. There is a patio heater for cooler months and a choice of gas or conventional charcoal Weber barbeques. Dining here on the terrace with the sun going down and the lights coming on in Mougins Village is always a delight.

There is high hedging on all sides for excellent privacy.

The villa has private parking for 3 cars and is secured by remote controlled electric gates. ====================================================================================

Children are very welcome at Villa Oleander and we have plastic boules for the boules court and plenty of inflatables for the heated pool. The children (and young at heart adults!) will enjoy the renovation of our games room, featuring a slate bed pool table and lounge area with large flatscreen TV and Xbox 360 games console (with Kinect and DVD player) and seating area for books and board games. ==================================================================================== Recognition: AS FEATURED in `SHE` MAGAZINE! (July 2008), `BELLA` (Feb 2009), `LIVING ABROAD` (Aug 2010) and also listed in HOLIDAY RENTALS very own `Top 10 Villas with Pools in Europe.` ====================================================================================

About Alastair Walmsley

Hi! I`m Alastair. My wife, Sue, and I bought Villa Oleander in Mougins with Paul and his wife, Leony, in 2007. I have known Paul since I was 4 years old, and he and I manage all the issues involved in renting our villa out to others. I am a chartered accountant and he is a general dental practitioner.

Alastair Walmsley purchased this villa in 2007

Why Alastair Walmsley chose Mougins

We wanted to find a location and villa that we would never tire of revisiting. That location had to be the South of France because of its year round appeal - there is so much more to do than just sunbathe. Mougins, I think, has the perfect location on the Riviera - centrally placed for Monaco, Cannes, St Tropez and everywhere in between. Our villa feels like it is in the heart of Provence, yet it is only 10 minutes from the Med and 20 minutes from Nice International Airport. Oh, and it just happens to have a picture perfect medieval village famed for its excellent restaurants! Not to mention the golf courses!

What makes this villa unique

Equally, Villa Oleander has the perfect position in Mougins. It is within easy walking distance of the Old Village yet perched up to have the perfect view over the village with the Mediterranean Sea in the background and the Esterel mountains to the west. All the main rooms open to this south facing view, and there is nothing quite like watching the sun going down and the village light up at night whilst drinking a glass of wine on the balcony. I will gladly email a panoramic picture of our view - it really is exceptional! We are very proud of our villa and love to stay there with our families, but take pleasure from the fact that when we can`t be there, others are enjoying it too. I am more than happy to chat with anyone who thinks they may be interested in staying there.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It was our son Frederik who wanted to go to cote d'Azur for holiday as he loves France, and this not only because he has a French girlfriend. He got the task to look for a house to rent by internet and he found.....Villa Oleander in Mougins! The presentation of Villa Oleander in the internet was really good but what we saw when we went there for the first time was even much more than we expected. It is a marvellous place and it was perfect for our family holiday. The view over Mougins and the hills as far as to the sea is spectacular and at any time of the day really brilliant. You are nearby to the great places of Cannes, Nice and Monaco and to all the other lovely villages in the region. There is so much you can do in this region: strolling along the market of Valbonne, eating great seafood by Brune in Cannes, relaxing in the sun in one of the beach clubs, and so on and on.....But also just staying at the Villa will guarantee you a perfect day because it offers everything you need: the swimming pool area is great ,the pool-house with refrigerator guaranties cold wine at any time without moving and the sitting area under the big palm is a good place for reading or having a break from the sun. The little terrace in front of the sleeping room upstairs is the best place to start in the day with a cup of coffee and a croissant in the morning. At the terrace in front of the living room we spent lovely evenings having dinner and having interesting discussions by candlelight with our children. Villa Oleander not only offers you everything you need for a perfect holiday in a house. It is furthermore the spirit of the house which makes you feel that everything to the smallest detail is arranged with enthusiasm and love. We all hope to come back to Villa Oleander one time.......

Our Home in France

  • 5 of 5

Our Home in France!!

Bev and I (“young” widow friends) spent 3 wonderful weeks in Villa Oleander! I had a knee that was misbehaving so we spent more time than we had planned in our home with “the million dollar view”! What a treat that was....dining alfresco on our terrace with candles, flowers and wine!

Our visiting friend from Montreal was enchanted!

The entire house was lovely and our bedrooms, very comfortable.....great pillows!

Our kitchen was a pleasure to work in. We had everything we needed and more. We love cooking and food shopping was NOT disappointing. Visits to the Carrefour for staples and wine...Le Grand Frais for everything else and the upscale shops in Valbonne for everything else and more! They had wonderful prepared meals, pates and cheese. And, of course, always a stop at the Patisserie on Ave. Saint Basile for our daily baguette. I think we became “French foodies” !

Alizataxi was a godsend! She drove us to the door of La Place de Mougins where we had a delightful dinner. She also took us on a 4 hour tour along the Mediterranean ending up in Eze..... Beautiful!

Lunches out were always a treat. L’Amandier de Mougins was very special. We also loved Resto des Arts (moules et frites) and Broche de Fer ( Soupe au Poisson). Moulin de Mougins was very disappointing.

Lucy, the delightful English girl who came to clean couldn’t do enough for us.

Claire was superb. She went to great lengths to make our stay perfect. We had a few travel changes due to “the knee” and she was most helpful with those.

We loved our stay in our “Home in France” and would love to return!!

Villa Oleander is a special place!

Typically French, superbly maintained

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at the Villa late Sept/early Oct, with glorious weather.

The Villa with an immaculately maintained private spacious garden and pool is located in a semi-rural setting with an uninterrupted view of the lovely hilltop village of Mougins, about 15 minutes walk away.

With no nearby passing traffic, everything was peaceful day and night.

The typically French accommodation is very comfortable (including the sleeping accommodation) with a high level of convenience and maintained to a very high standard. The air conditioning system worked well.

The outdoor dining facility on the terrace, with views of Mougins is, a real plus point where we spent many hours.

Stunning Cannes, with its many festivals, is only 6 km away and there are many other interesting places to visit - don't miss St-Paul-de-Vence.

In summary, a wonderful place to relax and re-charge the batteries, in a lovely part of France.

Owner's Response: Hi John. Thank you for taking the trouble to write a review. We often go ourselves in October and always seem to get fabulous weather - it's a nice time of year to visit the Côte d'Azur. I'm delighted that you and your friends had a lovely time exploring the region and relaxing back at Villa Oleander. We hope to welcome you back again next year. Alastair, Sue, Paul and Leony

A magnificent Mougins retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The perfect place from which to explore and succumb to the magic of Mougins ……… Villa Oleander is a treasure! Seated on the terrace, sipping a glass of Sancerre, lulled by the strains of a French chanteuse and watching the lights begin to twinkle in the old village, it is hard to leave this post card perfect home ……… even to indulge in the culinary delights that await in several of the excellent restaurants in Mougins. Villa Oleander exudes the romantic charm of the south of France, while providing the modern conveniences that make a stay there trouble free. I would go back in a heartbeat and I will!

Owner's Response: Thanks Maureen, we are delighted that you have enjoyed your two weeks at Villa Oleander so much. The local restaurants are fabulous, but like you, we also love to dine in at night with the delicious local produce that we have found at the markets that day! It is a truly romantic setting - there have been three marriage proposals at the villa so far (that we know of, maybe more!!) We look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Serene Sanctuary Tucked Away in the Mougins Hills

  • 5 of 5

Our family has just returned from Easter week at Oleander. The villa was ideal as a base to explore the Cote D'Azur region, and then return to relax in tranquillity. The airport is minutes away, the old village of Mougins lingers in the view of the hills, and Cannes is close enough to see the sea, but far enough to feel worlds away from the bustle of La Croisette.

The property is very well equipped, and understatedly elegant inside and out. Our teenagers were even so well occupied with the amenities - boules, billiards, pool & ping pong - they forgot there was a great WIFI signal and SKY TV. It is evident the property has an abundance of TLC and feels like a 'home', and not a rental villa. If you are considering a move to the South of France, a stay in Oleander will give you a refreshing taste of life as a local and not a tourist. We would thoroughly recommend Oleander as a wonderful foundation to build memories of France with family and friends.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for these lovely comments. We're delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at Villa Oleander. I'm particularly glad that you noticed the special touches and that you had plenty of options to keep the children away from their computers! I agree that we have the perfect base for exploring - Mougins is not only such a beautiful, atmospheric village, but it is superbly located - so central to visit anywhere from the Italian border to Aix-en-Provence, and from the coastal gems to peaceful mountain villages. And yes, Villa Oleander has the best view in Mougins! Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

Location, Location, location

We stayed with family and friends at the fantastic Villa Oleander in July 2013; it was our third stay so I guess that sums up exactly what we feel about the place! Villa Oleander just gets better and better each year, the gardens are beautiful and are lovingly maintained, the Villa itself is constantly being updated and we love all the little extra touches such as dressing gowns, information re the area etc, the owners haven’t just bought a villa in the south of France to rent out to make money, you can see it is a definite passion for them. After holidaying in the South of France for many years now, we can honestly say you will be extremely hard pressed to find a villa with such a fantastic location, it is on the door step to Mougins old village with all its fabulous restaurants and art shops, a short drive into Cannes and Antibes, and also an easy commute of under 30 mins to Nice, St Tropez, Grasse, and the pretty villages of Eze and St Paul de Vence. The actual positioning of the villa cannot be beaten; you are in a private quiet area with amazing views towards Mougins and the bay of Cannes in the distance. We spent many a balmy evening eating alfresco watching the firework displays of both Cannes and Mougins. Local amenities are great, there is a supermarket a short 5 minute drive away, bakers, pharmacy etc just 2 minutes drive or 10 minute walk away and then for a lovely family lunch and mooch about there is the very English village of Valbonne, we loved the little shops and boutiques there. Claire and her team make arrival and anything during your stay extra easy, we had our 5 year old son with us and he was well catered for with regards little people’s needs, I cannot say how fantastic the games room addition is both for parents and children, he spent , many an afternoon playing in there. Villa Oleander is a special place, fantastic location, superb interior including beds, linens, fully equipped kitchen, SKY TV etc and an equally amazing exterior. We love the place so much that we have now booked our fourth stay there next year; I really think that anyone would struggle to find a 5 star villa of equal standard.

Owner's Response: Thanks Eve. Lovely words and glad you like the new games room. It means a lot to hear our efforts have been noticed and inspires us to do much more! It is so rewarding when we take a repeat booking - when we can't be there ourselves, we take pleasure from knowing others are in Mougins enjoying our villa as much as we do. Have a great summer 2014!

Magical Mougins

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your beautiful villa with us for the past ten days. Our experience in the South of France was nothing less than magical! The villa was the perfect home for our travels to Italy, Avignon, Monte Carlo, and all over.

We fell in love with Mougins, which was wonderfully convenient - especially for dinner. The accommodations were lovely - the amenities and special touches truly made us feel at home. If only we could take the magnificent vista with us back to our very flat landscape in New Mexico. C`est la vie!

Our only regret is that we must leave, but we hope to be back again soon…

Best Wishes,

Julie and Bill

Our villa is in the picture-postcard, 11th century, medieval village of Mougins, famous in the French Riviera for its superb restaurants, art galleries and surrounding golf courses.

Thanks to excellent road links, it is only 20 minutes from Nice Airport, yet retains its peaceful village charm. And whilst only 6km from Cannes and the Mediterranean Sea, it has the feel of being in the Provence countryside.

Mougins is centrally placed to explore the Cote d`Azur highlights of St Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Nice and Monaco, not to mention the charming neighbouring villages of Grasse, Valbonne, St Paul de Vence, and Biot to name just a few close to our villa. We are also close enough to day trip to Menton and the Italian border, Aix-en-Provence, the magnificent Gorges du Verdon, and the less touristy villages of the Northern Var and Gorges du Loup.

Our in house iPad is full of suggestions for days out.

(see our Pinterest pages for ideas; http://uk.pinterest.com/mouginsvilla)

Mougins is also home to the 427 hectare National Parc de La Valmasque and Lake Fontemerle, giving it a semi rural feel.

At a height of 260 metres, Mougins is beautifully maintained, its winding pedestrian streets filled with art galleries and over a dozen excellent restaurants. Pablo Picasso chose to spend his last 12 years here and his studio was in the Old Village in a building that is now the tourist office. Other famous people that have chosen Mougins to live include Fernand Léger, Jean Cocteau, Yves Saint Laurent, Winston Churchill, Édith Piaf. The michelin starred Moulin de Mougins and the 5 star Mas Candille have cemented Mougins` reputation. Alain Ducasse and Roger Vergé have managed restaurants in the village and now famous chef, Denis Fetisson, owns two of our many wonderful restaurants.

Mougins is fortunate to have the excellent Musée de la Photographie, Musée d`Art Classique, and each year hosts the International Gastronomy Festival of Mougins in September.

There are a dozen golf courses within 45 minutes of Mougins and within 5km of the villa there are three excellent courses which can compete with anything in Europe.

There are courses to suit all budgets.

The closest course to the villa (5 minutes' drive) and one of the best around, is Cannes Mougins, which has hosted European Tour events 14 times with winners including the late, great Seve Ballesteros. Green fees are €100- €120 per round and it is worth every cent!

Just the other side of the village is Royal Mougins, which is a very exclusive golf club with a course to match. Fees are €150-€175, but be sure to book well in advance as the club only allows limited numbers of non-members per day.

Only a ten minute drive from the villa, is Saint Donat, on the road between Mouans Sartoux and Grasse. The green fees are only €79 which is fantastic value for money. The course is not long, but intricate and testing; it always seems to be in great condition. Others a little further away but well worth a mention include the famous Four Seasons golf resort of Terre Blanche, which has two championship standard courses; le Riou is the shorter, but tighter; le Château is over 7,000 yards and is a true test for any standard of player.

Also Château de Taulane, beyond Grasse into the mountains- a stunning Gary Player designed course (green fees are €100 per round), and then Monte Carlo golf club- set high above the principality of Monaco with the most breathtaking views of the area.

We have a short video of a typical day at Villa Oleander.
