Corfu town: The main town of Corfu is one of the most interesting cities in Greece due to the heavy influence of the Venetians who for centuries controlled the island. Like the other Ionian islands Corfu was never occupied by the Turks, which gives it a character very different from the rest of Greece. But Corfu town has seen other influences as well including the British, the Normans, the French, and the Greeks and Romans whose ancient buildings are still in evidence in several archaeology sites and the excellent archaeological museum.

The town itself is divided into two parts, the old and the new areas. The old part of the town displays the elegant churches of various religions, the maze of cobbled streets, and also the Old Fortress that stands proudly, looking over the town. The new parts of the town hold the abundance of cosmopolitan shops that can satisfy everyone's tastes and demands.

Achillion Palace: The Palace, located in the village of Gastouri, was erected in 1890 for Elizabeth (Sissy), the Empress of Austria as the solace of her soul. It was used as her summer retreat. Later the Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany bought the Palace. Directly below, on the coast, is the unusual Kaiser’s bridge, the stone built jetty where the Kaiser set out on his yacht for swimming trips.

The Palace is definitely a place to take your camera. This beautiful building in picturesque gardens overlooks the sea and Corfu town. It is one of Corfu's top attractions.

The Old Fortress of Corfu: In the 13th and 14th centuries, the already existing Byzantine fortification on the islet was improved, and in the 15th century the walls were reconstructed by the Venetians. In the 16th century, the erection of all the defensive structures, designed by Venetian architects (Michele Sanmicheli), was completed. From ca. 1500 onwards, the fortified islet was used as a military and administrative centre. Few buildings of the Venetian period are preserved, such as the central gate, the powder magazines, and the prisons. During the British Protectorate (1815-1864) new defensive structures and new buildings were erected, such as the barracks, the hospital, and the church of St. George.

In the early 1980's, the Martinego bastion was consolidated and in 1993 the land-side tower was restored. In the years 1992-1994, before the Summit Conference, the Ministry of Culture restored the central gate, the former 'Latin chapel', the English barracks, the so-called 'Forseer' building.

Beautiful location, very nice accomodation.

The location is spectacular, the views amazing, the water crystal clear and warm and there are little fishes to swim with! The beach is not 100% sand, there are pebbles, shingles and small rocks as you walk out into the sea, but sandy once passed it. Local beach shops do sell footwear to overcome this if you are uncomfortable walking over them. Agios Gordios is a small village with one main street, which is very picturesque and quiet so dont come here if you are looking to party! Our 2 favourite restaurants were Romantic Palace situated right on the beach so you can dine overlooking the Ionian Sea, and Lindas on the main street. Both serve outstanding selection of food and provide divine dining, you can view them both on the internet. The cost of living is on a par with the UK £3 for a beer, £50 for 3 course meal for 2 but of course if your self-catering you can probably half that cost! The only minus i would give this village is that it seems to have a large population of wasps!! I did not know this and have a bit of a wasp-phobia so initially found this distressing. However, they are small and only seem to be curious and i never saw anyone being stung by one. To overcome this i purchased a lilo and did all my sunbathing on the sea, which was great as it was very hot!! Wasps are obviously very interested in you if you are eating so just leave dining out until the evening when they have all gone to bed!! Also try to stick to accommodation in the village and not one of the hillside hotels, we heard that the wasps actually nest on the bottoms of the verandas there ..... agghhhh!! Taxis are expensive, bus services run from Corfu town bus station all over the island so get a taxi from the airport there (about 10 euros). They are big air conditioned coaches and will cost 4 euros (for 2) instead of 40 and usually run every hour!! Highly recommend a visit here, very relaxing, the locals are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Great holiday to be had, hope this has been useful, enjoy!!!

Agios Gordios is a small colourful village, situated in the western coast of Corfù, only 14 km from Corfu town and port and 12 from the airport of the island.

It is a unique holiday destination, surrounded from mountains, full load of the green of olive trees that dominate the landscape round. The perfect place to stay if you wish to explore Corfu island, since you can easily reach both north and south. It is connected by bus to Corfu town, the bus stop is 200m away from our apartments, and there is also a 24-hour taxi rank situated at the centre of the resort.

The one which more astounds is the long sandy beach, awarded with the blue flag for 2013, a perfect bay in order to take the sun, partially organized. In its little deep crystalline waters, it is the ideal place in order to grant to a beautiful relaxant swimming, a sunbathing or a romantic sunset. There are boats, canoes and pedallos for hire that offer the opportunity for some explorations.

In the village you have a large choice of restaurants, tavernas, bars, mini markets, internet cafe, ATM, tourists shops and car and scooter rent.

There are some great walking opportunities in the hills around the village and in less than 5 km you can reach traditional villages and other beaches to visit.
