Overview

Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday home in Margate - King House, Margate Old Town

Four bedroom house over four Floors, including two living rooms, convenient

The house is centrally located on King Street, a road which passes through the Old Town and opens out to the Margate harbour. There are four bedrooms, each accommodating two people, with a stylish bathroom, a compact shower room, and a separate WC.

There is a very spacious kitchen and living area on the ground floor and a second living room on the first floor which has side views of the harbour.

The house dates from around 1850, and has a great deal of historic charm. There are various other historic buildings along King Street and elsewhere in the Old Town. Because of its intrinsic character, the house will particularly appeal to anyone who has a love of the historic nature of a traditional English seaside town.

Seaside Location in Margate: There is a top quality bathing beach just a couple of minutes walk from the house. This is clean, and because there is a gentle slope to the water, along with pools, the beach is safe for children.

Artistic Feel: The distinctive Turner Contemporary gallery is very close to the house. Also there are many local private art galleries, as well as shops selling artistic items.

Explore the Thanet and Kent Areas: Almost next to the Turner Contemporary gallery is the Tourist Information shop. Here you will be able to obtain a map of the area, plenty of tourist guide and also advice on how you can maximise your enjoyment of the Margate holiday.

Good Location but Poor Quality

  • 2 out of 5
The location is best thing about the house, it's down a rustic, retro looking street and the house is the same only grubbier. Upon the door opening you immediately notice a strange sort of putty/damp smell and dark gloomy interior. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils, but no tea towels and other peoples belongings in the cupboards. The windows and blinds are filthy and the floors havn't seen a hoover in a long time. The only shower is in the hall next to the cellar door and the other bathroom on the 3rd floor. We bleached everything before we used them. Towels provided were clean but not enough of them. No hand towels. In the bedroom drawers we discovered old mouldy dirty plates and cutlery and in another set of drawers someones socks. The bedlinen was clean but old fashioned and worn. The furniture was old and grubby. The carpets have been screwed down rather than fitted and the decor is old magnolia with a few damp stains thrown in. The TV and DVD did not work and there where no board games etc. Drunken people in the flats next door kept us all awake one night. I would not recommend this place.

Owner's Response: The house certainly has an excellent location in the heart of the Old Town, very close to numerous attractive quirky shops, the harbour, and the Turner Contemporary Gallery.

The floor in the ground floor dining room is wooden, and had recently had special preservative oil applied. There are large windows with horizontal blinds, which allow plenty of light into the interior.

Windows and blinds have since been thoroughly cleaned, and window frames painted. New carpets throughout the house had been laid less than a fortnight earlier. The main bathroom is on the third floor, but there is also a compact shower room at the rear of the ground floor. More towels will be provided for the bathroom and kitchen. All drawers have been thoroughly cleaned out.

The bedlinen had been purchased at the local Edinburgh Woollen Mills shop very recently, and had been deliberately chosen to have a traditional vintage look which suits such an historic house. Similarly furniture is in a traditional style as more modern pieces would look out of place.

The house has recently been repainted in a modern magnolia colour. Any previous damp stains have been covered over. The TV and DVD player will be working for the next holiday occupants, and board games will be supplied. Generally speaking the house is in a quiet location.

All reasonable efforts have been made to ensure that anyone staying at this very individual and distinctive house will enjoy their holiday in the centre of historic and charming Margate.

The King Street house is ideally based to allow you to maximise the pleasure and interest of your stay in Margate. For a start it is located in the historic listed Old Town of Margate. The famous Winter Gardens is just a few minutes walk. Also nearby is the new and magnificent Turner Contemporary gallery and close by is the harbour pier which is fun to walk along in the evening while watching the sun setting.

The Thanet towns of Broadstairs and Ramsgate are a short bus or car ride away, as is the extensive Westfield shopping development.

Many sports are catered for including swimming, jet skiing and indoor bowling.

Golf: There are various golf courses in the Thanet area, including the famous Sandwich course where the British Open 2011 is being held.

Ski: There is a jet ski base about 1 km away from the holiday apartment, including daily rates and transport into the water.
