Welcome to our charming restored traditional detached longère sleeping 6 guests. This family gîte lies in the beautifully quiet rural hamlet of Jemelle in rural sunny Poitou-Charentes, midway between the beautiful cities of Poitiers and Limoges. Longère Louise is very secluded in a large private garden, but only 3km from Liglet, a delightful historic village with bar/restaurant and general store/bakery/post office.

THE FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

The kitchen is a traditional French country farmhouse kitchen and is very substantial. The original fireplace is a feature of the room with its large wood burning stove and cauldron. The original floor tiles remain, having been fully restored and the beamed ceiling is typical of longères of this period. There is a large pine farmhouse table with seating for six people. Fully tiled worktops and splash backs on both sides house an electric oven, a gas hob, full-sized fridge, full-sized freezer and washing machine. There is also a microwave, toaster, kettle and coffee maker with additional rustic free-standing work units for ample storage. There is a corner television receiving the major UK TV stations.

THE SÉJOUR

At the heart of the comfortable sitting room is an efficient wood burning stove. There are two roomy sofas with a large coffee table and ample smaller tables. There is a large sideboard containing stationery and a good variety of games for entertainment. The corner of the sitting room offers a useful dining area with attractive wrought iron table and chairs. There is a television with Sky digibox that receives the major UK satellite stations. There is a DVD player with a small selection of films, a portable CD/radio player and an Xbox games console with a large selection of games for all ages. The fully exposed stone wall and light decor give a cosy yet airy feel to the room, enhanced by the traditional tall south-facing French windows. The floor still boasts the original French tiles that have been fully restored. This is a wonderful room to relax in the evenings and indulge in some TV dinners!

THE 'SNUG'

There is a second small sitting room, situated between the kitchen and the séjour. This room also has the original floor tiles and you will find a large comfortable chair and a good selection of books and magazines. This is a good space to take time out and browse the library. You will find plenty of French magazines to give you inspirational ideas for furnishing and decorating.

THE TERRACOTTA ROOM

The terracotta bedroom in the old grenier is large with ample space and character. It has a plethora of original exposed beams and a feature brick chimney. The floor is tiled with original reclaimed terracotta tommette tiles covered with large rugs/bedside rugs where appropriate. The far end of the room offers an attractive double bed of white metal and brass. There are 2 vintage chests of drawers, large dressing table & chair and a sizeable hanging rail. This part of the room is divided off by full-length curtains. The remaining part of the bedroom offers two single beds. A grille set into the chimney provides warm air heating from the wood burner in the kitchen below.

THE OAK ROOM

The oak bedroom, also in the grenier, features a beautiful exposed stone wall, the original polished oak floor and a large window opening over the rear garden. There is an attractive wrought iron double bed with tempura mattress, a chest of drawers and a small dressing table & chair. There is also a double wardrobe, a nightstand and a comfy chair. All bedding and bed linen is included and is exclusively white bed linen. Patchwork quilts are provided if a little extra warmth is required. A grille set into the chimney provides warm air heating from the wood burner in the séjour below.

THE SALON

The upstairs of the property also features a galleried area between the two bedrooms. This serves as a charming salon. It is set out as a relaxing seating area with a large futon and occasional tables. This is a delightful room at any time of the day as the sunshine streams in through the roof window and bathes the whole room in light. It really is the perfect place to escape with a cup of tea (or a glass of wine) and while away your cares.

THE BATHROOM

The bathroom is on the ground floor. It is a good size and the walls are fully tiled in white. It has a full sized bath with shower over, WC and large hand basin. There is a towel ladder, a bathroom chair and ample hanging hooks. The tall French window makes this room particularly light and airy and the floor is tiled with the original restored floor tiles. Bath sheets and hand towels are included.

THE FRONT TERRACE

The property stands in large private gardens of 1800m2. Entrance is through the gates along the gravelled driveway past the old stone grinding wheel to a large gravelled parking area. Two footpaths lead around the banana trees, fig trees, lilacs and wisteria to the front of the house containing the original working well. Here you will find a secluded gravelled patio area with hardwood garden furniture and parasol, right outside your front door.

THE REAR TERRACE

The path continues around the front of the house to a large rear garden. This is mainly laid to grass with occasional fruit trees, including pears, apples and blackberries. Mixed hedging ensures the garden is totally private. There is a gravelled patio area to the rear of the barn with hardwood table, chairs, parasol and barbecue facilities, including a chiminea. Full length sun loungers are also available. This area catches the full late afternoon/evening sun and provides a perfect opportunity for al fresco dining in the remaining heat of the day. We also provide good quality full-length sun loungers for you to soak up the sun wherever you like.

IGOR AND ODDBOD

Igor sits patiently along the gravel path to the front door. Oddbod surveys the rear garden and waits for goodies from the chiminea. Igor guards the house in his own special way and spends a lot of time deep in thought, contemplating the French way of life. Give his head a pat as you walk past - it makes him happy!

LIGLET & LA TRIMOUILLE

The village of Liglet is close to the cottage and offers a post office/general store/bakery and a pub/restaurant serving delicious meals. The town of La Trimouille is only 7km away and offers a small supermarket, restaurants, cafés and a few shops as well as a cinema, medical services and a Tourist Information Office. L'Atelier des Collectionneurs in La Trimouille is a collectors' museum that showcases diverse private collections of the past and present covering a wide variety of themes.

L'ÎLE AUX SERPENTS

L'Île aux Serpents is situated on the edge of La Trimouille and is well worth a visit as you can find more than 60 species of animals including alligators, Cayman alligators, lizards, snakes, tortoises, crocodiles and chameleons, as well as the recent additions of otters, mongeese and desert cats. There is also a shop with refreshments and a wide variety of souvenirs and quality craft items.

VILLESALEM

Only a couple of kilometres from the cottage you can find a real treasure - the Romanesque priory of Villesalem, which was occupied by Benedictine monks from 1109. Although many buildings were destroyed during the Hundred Years War, the church remains and its sculptured facade of Notre Dame de la Paix is magnificent.

SAINT-SAVIN

The abbey of Saint-Savin lies close to the cottage and was made a UNESCO World heritage site in 1983 thanks to its exceptional Romanesque wall paintings. These are displayed amidst fibre-optic lighting, stained glass windows and wrought iron lamps. You will also find a scenographic tour in the monastic buildings, including films, dioramas and multimedia activities.

ANGLES-SUR-L'ANGLIN

Angles-sur-l’Anglin (north of Saint-Savin) is officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France and is so near the cottage that there is no excuse not to visit. Its narrow winding streets interspersed with workshops and cafes are simply captivating. The village is also home to the “Roc aux Sorciers”, a sculpted frieze dating back 15,000 years and discovered in 1950. The visitors' centre offers a fascinating multimedia presentation.

MONTMORILLON

Montmorillon, the City of Books and the Written Word, is a charming medieval town with winding streets to explore and pavement cafés. There is a well-equipped tourist office here with a comprehensive selection of local guides. Montmorillon hosts a market on Wednesday morning. It has 2 large supermarkets and can also offer crazy golf, tennis and an equestrian centre.

LE BLANC

Le Blanc is a nearby town situated on the river. You can hire boats and canoes and try a variety of water sports. Or you can simply enjoy the good variety of shops and pavement cafes in the town. Le Blanc has a market on Sunday morning.

LES HEROLLES

If you happen to be staying at the cottage towards the end of the month, head to La Foire des Herolles on the 29th. You will find a plethora of goods on sale, including honey, truffles, fruits and nuts, cheese, wine, bread, sausages, bread, kitchen knives and utensils, cottons, linens, plants, shrubs, trees as well as garden and agricultural equipment. Les Foire des Herolles is enormous and offers something for everyone. It is completely free and the village of Les Herolles is well signposted from the surrounding area with plenty of well organised parking. A visit to this traditional, country market, held every month of the year for over 400 years, is a unique event not to be missed. It provides lots of interest and is an outstanding photographic opportunity.

CHÂTEAU DE BOURG ARCHAMBAULT

The wonderful castle of Bourg Archambault is situated to the south of La Trimouille. This was constructed as a fortress at the end of the XV century on the site of an old Roman fortress. Some of the original Roman elements can still be found, including the fortified gateway. It is surrounded by a large moat and has an enclosure wall flanked by two towers, a small fortified castle entrance and living quarters. There is also a chapel which contains magnificent examples of stone flags.

LA BRENNE NATIONAL PARK

The cottage is situated right on the edge of LA BRENNE NATIONAL PARK. This is one of France's best kept secrets as it provides vast areas rich in flora and fauna, largely hidden from the casual tourist. The preservation of the natural and cultural heritage results in up to 2000 lakes. Since receiving National Park status in 1989, La Brenne is an exceptional location for ornithology with over 260 species recorded and 150 breeding species. Butterflies and dragonflies are also in abundance here and plant life is diverse, including orchids, reed beds, heathland and oaks. Wild boar and red deer make La Brenne their home.

On arrival you will find a comprehensive property brochure with details of our caretakers and information about the cottage and its facilities. Reliable, efficient and local British caretakers are available at all times for emergencies. A large assortment of current tourist information is provided as well as local maps of the area. Freesat from Sky provides UK television by satellite. Two separate Sky boxes enable guests to view different channels in the séjour and the kitchen. The cottage is not available for short-term rent during the Winter Season but we are very happy to consider longer-term lets at discounted prices. Children of all ages are very welcome under the supervision of adults. We are happy to accept two well-behaved dogs. A supplement of £100 per dog per booking applies to cover the additional cleaning required. A full and thorough cleaning service is included prior to your arrival. We simply ask that guests leave the house in a clean and tidy condition on departure.
