About Tricia Petri-Clark

Tricia, originally from East Sussex in South East England, spent some years living in The Netherlands, but now lives on the Isle of Skye on the West coast of Scotland. Together with her Dutch husband, she owns and runs Gertie's Cottage in the picturesque small market town of Cranbrook in Kent, together with two holiday homes on the Isle of Skye - Alavik Lodge & Cottage (see HomeAway property number 1004372).

Tricia Petri-Clark purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Tricia Petri-Clark chose Cranbrook

We fell in love with this pretty, weatherboarded, early 19th century house the minute we saw it. Gertie's Cottage is cosy, warm and welcoming. When we stay, we love to stroll around the town, browse in the shops, drink coffee at one of several great cafes (sitting alfresco when the weather is fine) or have lunch at the local Inn. We named the cottage 'Gertie's' after my mum, who was a wonderful warm, loving person and always made everyone feel really welcome so it just seemed like the perfect name!

What makes this cottage unique

Gertie's has a lovely view over the Union Windmill from the back windows and the lovely little garden. The new log burner and exposed brickwork add to the charm of the cottage which is ideally positioned just a couple of minutes walk to local shops and facilities. It is also perfectly located to get to many local gardens, castles, visitor attractions, woodland and lake walks, etc.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Gertie’s cottage was an ideal place for my “sabbatical” as it accommodated two people very comfortably in a well set-up, modern house without much housework. We enjoyed shopping in the village and other nearby villages, as well as visiting the special features of the Kent countryside such as beautiful Sissinghurst Castle, Canterbury and places where our relatives lived many years ago before emigrating to Australia. Cranbrook Museum was especially interesting as was the Art Exhibition and provided an idea of the long local history of the town and many of the buildings and institutions. We also appreciated it being only just over one hour from London.

Clean, beautiful, updated kitchen, comfortable.

  • 5 out of 5
We absolutely LOVED Gertie's Cottage. It was the perfect setting for a week's stay in England for our family of 5. The cottage was very clean, cosy and comfortable. I was surprised at how nice the kitchen was, clearly it had recently been renovated and was very functional. The beds & linens were also clean and comfortable. The garden was a great little space for the kids to run around a bit and we had a dinner on the patio.

Tricia and Sally really went out of their way to ensure we were taken care of, far more than we expected. Our daughter had a touch of bronchitis and Sally helped schedule an appointment with a local doctor and made sure we received the care we needed in a place that was foreign to us.

Cranbrook itself was such a great place for our family to be, so small and quaint and off the beaten path in the English Countryside. The kids loved to play in the nearby park.

We spent three days in London, traveling by train from Staplehurst (10 minute drive). The train ride was an hour each way which was not ideal, but it was worth it for how quiet and beautiful Cranbrook was.

We can't say enough about how great Gertie's Cottage was for us. We plan on (and already have been) recommending it to family and friends.

We visited Gertie’s Cottage in the first week of May 2014 and we had a great time.
The cottage is absolutely lovely and it feels like coming home.
Tricia, who owns Gertie’s , supplied us with all the information we needed and gave us lots of suggestions on what to do, were to eat and what to see in Cranbrook and around .
Cranbrook is a busy little town and we felt very welcome in the local shops and the local pub.
All in all Gertie’s is great if you want to discover lovely Kent.
Next time we visit Kent we will make sure to book Gertie’s Cottage again!
Sandra, Tiny, Piet, Erik
PS: If you visit Gertie’s in early spring, like we did, go on the one of the nearby Bluebell Walks (check Google on where to go).

Delightful compact Kentish cottage

  • 5 out of 5
The cottage was superlatively clean with comfortable beds. There was an excellent standard of kitchen equipment. The cottage was well located within Cranbrook and we were able to do a number of country walks from the front door.
We would definitely recommend the cottage and would like to return ourselves. A great bolt-hole, yet so close to London!

Fabulous cottage and so convenient

  • 5 out of 5
We are a family of four, including a five year old and a nine month old, and we stayed at Gertie's Cottage for a week. The cottage is small but exactly as described, and it was perfect for our family. The attention to detail in furnishing the property and providing those homely touches was great and it had all the provisions you need (and more). Tricia (the owner) and Sally (the property manager) have been so attentive. In terms of location, we found Cranbrook a perfect location. The supermarket, newsagent, church, baker and green grocer are all walking distance. When going out for the day, Cranbrook is conveniently situated so that you can access the likes of Canterbury, London, Tunbridge Wells, Tenterden and Hastings easily. We plan to stay at Gertie's Cottage again and would definitely recommend it.

We were given a warm welcome from Sally, who was kind enough to escort us to a nearby parking place.
Everything in the cottage was in excellent condition and attractive. The cottage was cosy and well equipped, and we found the beds very comfortable. We took photos of the windmill from the back garden as very picturesque.
It was pleasant to walk from the cottage to the village centre and we found Cranbrook well situated to visit Sissinghurst and Hever Castle as well as the coast at Rye.We just wished we'd had more time to stay.
We recommend the cottage and it's location.

Gertie's Cottage is a pretty weatherboarded cottage situated just a minutes walk from the heart of Cranbrook, a peaceful small town surrounded by orchards and farmland, known as the Capital of the Kentish Weald. Narrow medieval streets are lined with pretty old houses and a wide range of interesting and independent shops. You will find several excellent pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and cafes, a town museum and Union Mill, the tallest and finest working smock mill in England which is just beyond the charming garden. Cranbrook is at the heart of the South East’s castles and gardens and the sea is only 35 minutes away. Just 19 miles from Ashford's International train station, London is also in easy reach for a day out - only an hour by train from Staplehurst, just 6 miles away. Close by are the world-famous Sissinghurst Gardens, Finchcocks Museum of Music, Tenterden’s Steam Railway, Bedgebury Pinetum and Bewl Water for walks/water sports.
