Overview

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Monchique region - Quinta da Relva

Romantic retreat, available all year, in the real Portugal

Approached through woodland, nestling in a valley which enjoys stunning views of foothills and coast, the house bursts with charm. Retaining many of its original features, carefully restored and enjoyed by the owners over 25 years, there is everything here for the complete natural healthy holiday; organic food is almost impossible to avoid, water is from our underground spring. No light at night in the valley apart from the moon and the stars, no sound but the wildlife. These mountains are Algarve's best kept secret. The house is a typical quinta surrounded by fertile farmland. Footpaths lead from the house into the forests & foot hills. This is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. At the far side of the mountain eagles circle overhead and there are views as far as Lisbon over a vast expanse of foothills There is another world here. People have lived and farmed here all their lives. The landscape is strange and beautiful. Sunset best viewed with a bottle of wine.

At Home : Always very popular with honeymooners and families with children who enjoy the opportunity to spend days at home by the pool and exploring the garden It is home to us and our children, so there are boxes of toys and books. There is a dining area outside the kitchen with a granite table and barbecue. The swimming pool and garden at the side of the house reached by a level path. This is particularly useful for people with small children as access to the area can be more easily monitored

Around the pool area are wooden sunbeds with mattresses, chairs and an umbrella. The pool is 5m x 10m, there are wide steps for easy access. The rest of the property is terraced with a variety of olive trees, fruit trees and wild flowers. There are stunning views from the higher terrace to the foothills and coast. You are welcome to help yourself to fruit from the trees.

Our nearest restaurant (our favourite) is 15min walk across the valley, a magical walk home by moonlight.

Real Portugal: This is authentic Portugal .Monchique is a small working town. There are few tourists: those who visit come for lunch and to gaze at the view. It has a good number of restaurants and bars, banks, food shops and a market. Produce has travelled metres rather than miles. Vegetarians ,vegans and omnivores are all delighted. There is an attractive square, a park and indoor swimming pool and craft shops. Staying in Monchique is a very different experience from life on the coast. The pace is slow and you will feel you have stepped back in time. Walking the footpaths around the town you will see a forgotten culture. You are likely to be included in whatever festivities are taking place, be it an event at the church, a pig roast or music in the square. There are weekly and monthly markets and a horse fair. It is possible to use the house as part of a larger group and the owner can make arrangements for other houses in the area. Special interest holidays can be arranged by the owner.

Christmas, New Year and Easter: Chance to refresh your spirit. Christmas in Monchique is very simple. Festivities only begin a few days before. Celebrations take place at home and at the church. Christmas trees are in all the restaurants and houses.

If you wish to have a simple Christmas Quinta da Relva is perfect. You can cut your own fir tree from the grounds and decorate the house with orange branches, light an enormous log fire and enjoy the smell of eucalyptus. and wood smoke. The weather can be bright and sunny and warm in the day but cold at night So bring warm clothes. At New year it is possible to go to the coast for the celebrations, or sit on the terrace and watch the firework display, then a New Years Day walk on the west beaches. Easter in Monchique is celebrated at the church and with a procession in the town, flowers decorate the pavements. This is the best time for walking in the forests, mountains and coast. Wild flowers are everywhere. The weather can do anything however, so come prepared.

About Diana Hudson

We are a family of four and we live in Dorking in Surrey.

Our children have been coming here since they were born . Now 22 and 17 and still come with us twice a year bringing their friends with them . They love the sense of belonging here and have their own places to go and people to see . Daughter has been arranging her wedding here since she was about 5 !

We are all in the creative world and this place is our inspiration. . In the last 3 years I have been arranging exchanges with young people between Monchique and Brighton as we are very aware of the difficulties unemployment brings to a rural community , so we have had quite a few living with us in Dorking and they have become friends

Diana Hudson purchased this farmhouse in 1981

Why Diana Hudson chose Monchique region

A Portuguese friend introduced us to Monchique . We saw this place and it was love at first sight even though it was getting dark and raining at the time. It has taken us years to rescue it . We have lost track of the people who have described it as 'absolute heaven' in our guestbook. We wanted the real Portugal and we wanted to be part of the town, to shop locally and use local trades people. We were helped to renovate this house by a local builder who used the traditional methods (and the traditional very slow speed) The materials are all sourced locally We work on the garden whenever we are there . There terraces had been abandoned .when we bought it from the farmer as their had been a drought . We have kept a balance between a beautiful garden and and the wild mountain. Always something to explore

What makes this farmhouse unique

It is fairly unusual to be able to stay in a farmhouse rather than a 'villa'. According to our agents this is the most sought after house on the mountain . Some have stayed for as long as 4 months and some are just about to come for their 15th visit . This is a real much loved home and we are told it shows . Amalia our maid has łalso looked after this house for 22 years and shows no sign of stopping. The house has 'all mod cons' and is very comfortable. .This year we have been asked to host a wedding which we are very excited about . We are putting guests in neighbouring houses arranging all the legal requirements, the registrar, catering and music and organising the event .

Paradise

Peaceful location on a large site with only the sound of the birds. Lovely house with cosy rustic character- spent the days relaxing by the pool and the evenings cosy beside the log fire, with plentiful firewood supplied. Comfy beds, loved all the little nooks in the garden where I could relax and read or crochet. Our favourite thing was squeezing oranges from the trees beside the pool, for breakfast . Short walk to A Rampa restaurant for great piri piri chicken and short drive to O Luar Du Foia where we enjoyed fantastic food at a reasonable price. Trips to the West Coast beaches, to Alvor and Lagos were only about half an hour away. The house, its large site and location with wonderful views just made our holiday so special and we hope to return soon.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed our house and felt so at home there .It is good to be able to find your own special corner in the garden . I love going down to the olive grove and sitting under the trees in the wild flowers. We usually climb up to the top terraces in the evening to our 'cocktail terrace' with views all down to the coast It is nice to be there out of season and have the contrast of sunny days and a big blazing fire at night . Sometimes it is difficult to tear yourself away from the house ! Glad you enjoyed the restaurants, those are our favorites as well . Look forward to having you back again Diana

A brillant stay under the soft winter sun!

  • 5 of 5

The colourful garden is welcoming us, and this gives you immediately the impression that you will perfectly relax there. Not only that despite winter time we had plenty of colourfull spots from the garden but also orange and mandarine trees had plenty of fruits. Our young children loved collecting them in the morning for the breakfast juices. There is no disapointment to expect, the description is truthful and in any event the contact point in Monchique is very helpful and swift in reacting.

The property is very clean: a care taker comes 3 times a week which is very helpful. Don't worry she will work without disturbing you if you stay at home while she washes and tidies up.

We have enjoyed walking in the mountain: Foia and Picota, which is probably easier in Winter than in Summer. Also the beaches (South and West), are not far (30 km). In Winter you will go there more for playing than for bathing but you will enjoy the space!

Truly we can recommand the address!

A wonderful base to both stay & explore.

  • 5 of 5

Just a quick note to say how much we loved this cottage in Portugal. It really is something quite special, from the amazing wisteria, the inviting pool, finding hidden corners in the grounds to the growing sense of tranquility we felt during the week.

The car hire company that was recommended was great- pick up was smooth and it was a very easy journey to get there. Having groceries in (as pre-arranged when we booked) was lovely and a great welcome.

We visited the fantastic beaches on the west and south coast and enjoyed exploring on quiet roads and in local towns. We had a great day within Lucio from Alternativ Tours- hike to the Foia peak, 32 km bike ride downhill then into canoes and a swim. We'd really recommend his company.

Everything in the house was in good order and the maid kept it nice and clean. There was a wide choice of local restaurants: good piri piri chicken was easy to find. We were very grateful to the agents for printing out our boarding cards on Easter Friday - everyone concerned with the cottage has been very supportive.

As a place to both get away yet still have access to Algarve's natural attractions, this place was wonderful.

Thank you

very relaxing

Very relaxing. Beautiful weather. The children built a hut from wood in the big garden. We liked going to the beaches at the West Coast. The view all the way to the Atlantic is amazing. We had a great week in Quinta del Relva.

Second visit

  • 5 of 5

We've been before. And we'll be going again. Nicest house we've been to in Portugal. Freshly picked oranges for breakfast and 200 books to read. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Lovely return to our favourite Monchique farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We have always visited Quinta da Relva in the summer months so this was a contrast to visit in the Spring and escape the vast snow in England..

Wisteria out, blossom trees blooming, oranges ready for picking at the side of the pool & the sound of the Cuckoo from the scented Pine forest.

Quite chilly in the hills & what more could we want than a nice log fire in the evening after visiting "Rampa", the local restaurant for the best Chicken Piri Piri in Monchique!

Although the weather was not at its best we managed to chase the sun, finding it on Alvor beach on the south coast & also our favourite deserted beach on the west coast (Amoreria)

Amalia the maid was as cheerful as ever, keeping the house spotlessly clean and comfortable for the duration of our stay.

We found the new Intermarche supermarket in Monchique very useful to stock up with food on our arrival.

Restaurants Jardin das Oliveiras not too far away proved as good as ever and for the best sea food we visited Atlantida Restaurant on the edge of Alvor Beach, well worth the drive down the mountain.

We will certainly visit this rustic, away from it all farmhouse again!

Owner's Response: Taking a holiday out of season is really good for exploring . While the coastal towns have plenty of visitors in the Summer months, out of season you will have the place almost to yourself . Lagos and Silves are good places for a day out . Really interesting towns with old streets for wandering . We have had some of our best days taking the car, exploring the back roads north of Monchique , finding a hidden restaurant and having a huge lunch of local food .Walking the West coast is fantastic at any time of year. The house and a big fire is always lovely to come home to.

This is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Pretty much undiscovered. This is the real Portugal. A small working town with few tourists. There are stunning views in every direction. The mountain has rare flaura and fauna and untrammeled paths. The small town of Monchique is 5km from the house, with shops, restaurants, bars and market, and park. There is an attractive square with free internet access.

South coast beaches, water sports, golf and tennis are within 35 minutes drive. The 40 minute drive to the west coast offers an exciting alternative with its rugged wild coastline and national park.and some of the best surfing beaches in Europe . One of our favourite things to do is to spend the day beach hopping up the west coast. Starting with a stop at Aljezur market to buy baskets of fruit vegetable and fish and have coffee and cake

The famous spa at Caldas de Monchique is 20 minutes away, for health and beauty treatments or they can be arranged at the house. Nicole is a local specialist and her treatments have many times been described as the 'best massage I have ever had in my entire life'.

There are sleepy mountain towns, challenging walks, gentle strolls, horse riding, rivers, lakes and waterfalls in completely unspoilt countryside nearby. There is everything here for the complete healthy holiday; organic food is almost impossible to avoid, water is from our underground spring. No light at night in the valley apart from the moon and the stars, and no sound but the wildlife.

Children and pets heaven. This is a real farm house. Unfussy and very comfortable There is a lot of space to explore. The garden round the house is overrun with flowers and the 4 acres has terraces, trees and rocks.

A heavenly honeymoon location with complete privacy. star gazing on the bedroom terrace and lazy days by the pool

Great for a relaxed girls few day away with massage, swimming, laughing, drinking pink fizz round the fire.

Families home from home, plenty of space, 4 acres of garden , no traffic and no television. A return to the goodlife. Our two children have been here every year from the age of 0 to 25. This is home.

There is a small well established activity organisation in Monchique http://alternativtour.com/ Lucio speaks very good English. He will pick you up from the house and take you biking, walking, canoeing or climbing for an unforgettable day.

Guest often leave descriptions of bars, beaches and walks they have discovered. Even staying near the house there are walks in all directions with incredible views The house is situated in a valley with farmland and forest. There is smell of the eucalyptus and woodsmoke in the evening. We like to take a beer and go to the north side of the mountain and sit on the rocks at sunset . It is yet another world at the north side of the mountain with views as far as Lisbon with eagles circling overheard.

Golf: The nearest golf courses are Penina an which is 45 min drive and Morgardo, 25 min drive.

There are several more within 1 hours drive.

We are sometimes asked if we are near to the race track . This is near Lagos and is 30km away we can't see it and have never heard it.

Other activities:

The house has been the location for specialist holidays for painting and poetry.and book clubs We could probably do a small wedding as our friend is the local registrar! We have friends nearby who could provide more accommodation for large groups.
