Visit Hawaii and the NaPali Coast on the North Shore of Kauai...
The North Shore of Kauai is famous for the legendary NaPali Coast, as it has the most pristine beaches and the lushes tropical vegetation of all of the Hawaiian Islands. Our property is located right there, in one of the most secluded and private parts of the North Shore, in Haena. From our property, our guests can walk along the beach all the way to Ke’e Beach. The beach walk has beautiful vistas of Bali Hai and leads through all of Tunnels Beach, Haena Beach Park to the end of Ke’e Beach. Ke’e Beach is located at the bottom of Bali Hai, where the famous Kalalau Trail begins.
Towards the east, we are a short car or bicycle ride away from Lumahai Beach and famous Hanalei Bay and popular Hanalei Pier. The town of Hanalei is a quaint and beautiful little town with many excellent restaurants and little shops. Rental places offer everything from snorkel gear to bike rentals and kayak rentals.
The North Shore is waiting for your visit and The Hale Makai Cottages are happy to accommodate you. Please contact us for more information.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hale Makai Cottages. We felt like we had it all nestled here on the north shore of Kauai and now that we are home its all we talk and dream about. Hale Makai is wonderful: 2 large rooms, a full kitchen and a beautiful porch that we dined on each day. There’s ample space to enjoy your own quiet time, or a nice large common area to just hang out in with the sliding door open listening to the roar of the ocean. In the morning we would get up brew tasty Kona coffee, walk to the beach area, and view the breathtaking sunrises it was a great way to begin every day. Thank you again for a wonderful time. One final note; I’m not the betting type of guy but as soon as I got home I bought my 1st PowerBall lottery ticket, closed my eyes and thought if I win I’m going right back to Kauai (the north shore that is). We came to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary never knowing we would celebrate so much more. The island truly is a paradise and no where is it more evident than the North Shore. Hale Makai allowed us to experience the beauty, serenity and peace that are so much Kauai. We could have seen it from other accommodations but not have experienced it. Our bare feet could not have taken only a dozen steps across lush grass to our own secluded section of the North Shore only at Hale Makai!! The view even from inside is indescribable with pen & paper. Sights and sounds we will never forget! We love it here. Mahalo, Mahalo for everything!

Our 6th stay at The Hale Makai Beach Cottages. Beautiful as ever! All the improvements are wonderful and we certainly enjoy them. Weather this year was phenomenal! It’s so peaceful and restful here. We love it, Thanks! Hale Makai keeps us coming back year after year.

The Hale Makai Cottages are perfect if you're looking to be a bit out of Hanalei (really only ten minutes or so) and desire the luxury of an oceanfront resort with the added economy and spaciousness of your own kitchen, lanai and living area. We stayed in the Hibiscus Cottage #2 which sits practically on the water with some of the most amazing views the property holds - especially from the master bedroom! As far as things to do, we had some weather so spent quiet time enjoying the sporadic sun bursts between the showers, venturing up and down the beautiful - very long - beach, and swimming. Other than food, the cottage was prepared with a bounty of fresh, soft linen, locally made soaps, and all the things one requires in a well-equipped kitchen. We did venture out for dinner one evening - though hard pressed to leave the perfect setting - and ended up at the Baracuda where, comparatively, the food and service were poor and the view, a parking lot. However, aside from that unfortunate excursion, we loved our stay and absolutely hope to return to Hale Makai. Perhaps next time a bit longer!
When you pay this much per night for a place, it's reasonable to have certain expectations. Such as shampoo. No little bottles of shampoo. No store close by either. So be sure to bring some or you will be washing your hair with bar soap.
We lost power the first night we stayed. Since there is no a/c, the room was very warm and no fans blowing so it was fairly miserable. It was also very windy and there is a palm frond that scraped the roof all night. This was not a broken frond, but had been there for a very long time. I have a hard time believing we are the only ones who noticed
When I asked if someone could come and fix the problem I was told that everything in Hawaii is slow and no promises.
The screen door was off when we got there and we asked to have someone put it on. We were told that it was easy, we could do it ourselves.
We paid the $5 for laundry soap (1 load) and then we got the instructions on how/where/when and as directed, we attempted to wash our clothes the evening before we left (you can only do laundry between 4 and 9 pm). We couldn't do laundry because it was occupied for 24 hours by the cleaning crew. We had no way to wash our clothes before our long flight home.
Most disappointing to us was the lack of concern over any of our comments and complaints. We can't recommend this place.
My wife and I stayed 10 days at the Hale Makai Cottages and loved it! We don't like the touristy resorts with all the kids and always look for accommodations away from the crowds. This property was perfect! We stayed 5 nights in cottage #1 and 5 nights in cottage #3. Both were clean with updated furnishings and even a large soaking tub in the bathroom. The grounds are a tropical paradise and just steps from a beautiful beach with great snorkeling. There are 5 cottages on the property, but it never felt crowded. For a rare property like this in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, we thought the pricing was reasonable. We look forward to returning!
I have stayed at places all over the world from hostels to luxury resort and this was a perfect place to stay in Kauai with my boyfriend. Remote yet accessible. Clean and modern. Would definitely choose it again. We were in Cottage 4.
When I booked the Hale Makai Cottage (#3), I was hoping the view and cottage would be at least half as wonderful as the pictures. When we arrived, I was so amazed...not only was the cottage everything that was posted on this page, the location, grounds, area, and view were more than anyone could want in a vacation rental.
We had been to Kauai 6 times, and wanted to be away from "the crowds", so we looked to the North Shore for escape! THIS is the place, look no further. We got our groceries in Kapaa on the way from the airport to the cottage, and never left.
We walked on the, almost private, beach at least once a day, snorkled with the seal and giant turtle that we befriended, layed in the hammock and watched the sailboats, and had our wine as we watched the sunsets daily. I can't imagine a better place to be for 2 people who want to be alone.
When you come to Hale Maikai you will not want to leave. Many thanks to Klaus and Bam for making this a vacation to remember.
We'll see you next summer!!
We stayed here for 10 days for our 10th wedding anniversary. We were looking for a secluded piece of Kauai, away from tourists, close to the Napali Coast. You will find it all here plus more. Loved the property, the views, location, cottages, beach, snorkeling, seclusion, and on and on!!! Great place for anyone looking to get away from the resort style accommodations. Cottages are fully furnished with all you will need to cook and live comfortably, also the 4G cell phone coverage and wifi was a plus as well. Also can't say enough about the grounds keepers/cleaning crew (Aloha Clean) - very friendly, got some good tips, and they do a fantastic job of cleaning.
Can't wait to go back!!!
