HAENA, KAUAI, HAWAII - THE JUNGLE RIVERHOUSE, A PLACE QUITE UNIQUE

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday estate in Haena - The Jungle Riverhouse

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2 -6 Adults)

This unusual and intimate streamside home is located ten yards from a water-course that tumbles into three pools. Another larger river also freeflows through the property.

The hand-crafted home has an airy layout with excellent views of not only the streams and pools on the site itself but also of the more distant mountains and a waterfall. The main house has one bedroom as well as the living and eating areas and a great lanai.

Also available are a cottage with one bedroom and full bath, and a smaller screened cottage with a full bed and half-bath. The entire 3 acre property is only available as one rental and is not split up.

A Riverhouse is located just one mile from the beach and is situated midway between, to the east, Hanalei and Lumahai Beaches, and to the west are located both the world-renown Tunnels Beach as well as Ke'e beach and the start of the Na Pali Trail..

This home welcomes you with the sounds of cascading waters and songs of myriad birds! Lush jungle vegetation, privacy, relaxation, cool mountain breezes and beauty will surround you. Riverhouse is the epitomy of laid back old rural Hawaii. And the North Shore's famous beaches, restaurants, and eclectic shops are just a few short miles away!

Beware there is a semi-resident kitty cat, ChuChee who is politely fond of a little affection!

Guestbook comments from the owner
A River House is a spectacular and beautiful getaway set in lush tropical gardens and along a roaring river. A touch of real Hawaii as well, though close to more touristy venues, incredible beaches, and challenging hikes. Great privacy and peace. Owners take pride in property and obviously enjoy sharing it when they are not there.

Even in rainy season, a delight! Would recommend to anyone without reservation.

Rocky and I, Amanda are only able to stay home here at the Jungle Riverhouse for about half of every year. When we leave Kauai, we generally head to Seattle where our boat is moored. We own and operate a 90 foot fish packer that collects salmon in the Alaskan waters and delivers them to the plant to be filleted and vacuum packed.

Amanda Rutledge purchased this estate in 1999

Early on we learned that the many humpback whales that we saw in Alaska headed for the Hawaiian Islands to spend the winters. We thought that sounded like an excellent idea and we came here to explore. It was love at first sight with Kauai's North Shore! And then, to have found this place was completely off the charts!

While we are here, we spend a lot of time working on the grounds and also enjoying time with family and friends who always seem to find their way to our doorstep!

To be back a few steps from the busy world is a gift. To be awakened in the morning by bird and river song is a jewel. To wander these grounds is a pleasure.

Breathtaking!!! This home and the grounds are magnificent! We were joined on this long awaited vacation with my parents, my brother and his wife, and our three children. My parents stayed in the main house and used the master bedroom. The main house is where we spent much of our time as a family cooking (everything you could possibly need is provided in this kitchen), spending time on the lanai looking out over the rivers, observing the extraordinary landscaping and gorgeous views. We searched the property for different fruits and enjoyed making fresh delicious OJ in the mornings. My husband and our three children stayed in the cottage. They had a portable crib, a pack n' play, a monitor, baby linens, a few toys, a high chair and a booster seat! It was awesome! I was relieved from the stress and expense of having to pack so much stuff for the kids! In addition, they had plenty of beach gear for us to use! My brother and his wife stayed in the birds nest and were very happy. This property was absolutely ideal for our family as it allowed for everyone to be together in one beautiful house but also provided separate sleeping arrangements and we all had our own space whenever we needed it. I highly recommend the Riverhouse, we seriously can't say that enough! Its beauty is one to experience. I'd recommend bringing along some bug spray at night. Those tropical mosquitos can get you. Our family will never forget our time here and we truly hope to return in the near future. We were beyond thrilled. Thank you!!!!

Peaceful paradise

  • 5 out of 5
My family and I stayed here last August and now that we are heading back to Kauai I felt I should review this property. Once you get to The River House, there's little interest in leaving. With a group of six, three couples, we each had our own private sleeping areas. The sound of the water and breeze bid us goodnight every day. Of course, the sound of the rooster at 4am bid us good morning, but such is the nature of the island. This property is tucked away from everything and to some that may feel intimidating but it's a perfectly safe and serene environment. In fact, it's the isolation that is so amazing. You can sit out on the patio and listen to nature for hours. It's a great location for going to Tunnels Beach and Ke'e Beach. You may even find some goodies to take to the beach (snorkel masks and fins, coolers, beach mats, etc) in the gear closet. This unit has everything you could ask for. It does not have a/c but the cool breeze should do just fine, no matter the time of year. We did take the advice of previous reviews and made sure to clean the kitchen thoroughly before leaving on any adventures. Doing so kept us from ever having any ant issues. Overall, this is a perfect place for a nature loving family. It's truly peaceful and relaxing and worth the drive!

Amazing property and experience

  • 5 out of 5
I cant thank Amanda and Rocky enough for sharing their beautiful home and property. The amenities were fantastic and our family of 10 had a wonderful experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives. The grounds are amazing and our kids were out on adventures daily exploring the river and jungle. The homes on the property are clean with amazing architecture in the main house as well as a great kitchen. One recommendation is to bring bug spray which helped us with bites. Close to the beaches and a 10 minute drive to Hanalei makes this the perfect location for those not looking for a hotel experience. Cant wait to go back and stay at the river house.

Paradise Retreat

  • 5 out of 5
Think "Garden of Eden"! My husband and I have stayed at the River House several times and we love this property. The first time I walked up to the Main House I felt enveloped in a soothing, calming energy. The house is beautiful and the cottage and " the bird's nest" are charming. The property is absolutely breathtaking with the sound of the river and the jungle birds in the background. There are several different types of tropical fruit trees and the property is abundant with orchids, gingers, birds-of-paradise, etc. Hanalei Beach is minutes away and is one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet! If you are looking for a vacation experience with privacy and a place to unwind, you will love this property!

What one imagines Kauai to be and more!

  • 5 out of 5
Staying at the river house is truely relaxed bliss. Here you recieve what you imagined kauai to be as a kid when you could only dream of going. privacy, Tranquility, comfort, unique arcitecture and landscape and everything that one or six could need to vacation, just bring Clothing and food. This is a great place for a family trip or honymoon and is not over priced like most resorts. We dont even want to leave for the day.... I'll save touring for the rest of my stay. If I knew what I know now, I'd have booked our whole stay here:)
Thank you R and A for sharing your beautiful home with our family. We can hardly wait to our return.
Yours truely One Love B.

Fabulous!

  • 5 out of 5
Our family stayed here in July. Loved the site. Georgeous land with rivers and jungle-like setting. House is exactly as depicted and was immaculate. Back a long road with wildlife along the way. Great for adventurous- types. Roosters in the am. Great view of the mountain waterfalls through the kitchen window! We were here in the rainy season so it rained about 10-15 times per day, but no problem as the rain is usually short. Made for beautiful fruit and flowers all over the grounds. Great breakfast down the road in Hanalai. Go see the caves and beaches up north- worth it.
I would recommend this site to anyone who wants a different get-away experience. (Just watch the rental company as they made several errors on our reservation.)

Car: necessary

The famous Na Pali Trail starts less than 5 miles from Riverhouse. It is a 11 mile hike into valleys and beaches that are completely undeveloped. It is a hike best done with at least a 3 day timeframe.

Other epic hikes are also available not only on the North Shore but also throughout the island.

The beaches also provide beautiful and long stretches of the best sandy walks ever!

But be very careful - you could just fall in love with Kauai!
