This unusual and intimate streamside home is located ten yards from a water-course that tumbles into three pools. Another larger river also freeflows through the property.
The hand-crafted home has an airy layout with excellent views of not only the streams and pools on the site itself but also of the more distant mountains and a waterfall. The main house has one bedroom as well as the living and eating areas and a great lanai.
Also available are a cottage with one bedroom and full bath, and a smaller screened cottage with a full bed and half-bath. The entire 3 acre property is only available as one rental and is not split up.
A Riverhouse is located just one mile from the beach and is situated midway between, to the east, Hanalei and Lumahai Beaches, and to the west are located both the world-renown Tunnels Beach as well as Ke'e beach and the start of the Na Pali Trail..
This home welcomes you with the sounds of cascading waters and songs of myriad birds! Lush jungle vegetation, privacy, relaxation, cool mountain breezes and beauty will surround you. Riverhouse is the epitomy of laid back old rural Hawaii. And the North Shore's famous beaches, restaurants, and eclectic shops are just a few short miles away!
Beware there is a semi-resident kitty cat, ChuChee who is politely fond of a little affection!

Rocky and I, Amanda are only able to stay home here at the Jungle Riverhouse for about half of every year. When we leave Kauai, we generally head to Seattle where our boat is moored. We own and operate a 90 foot fish packer that collects salmon in the Alaskan waters and delivers them to the plant to be filleted and vacuum packed.
Amanda Rutledge purchased this estate in 1999
Early on we learned that the many humpback whales that we saw in Alaska headed for the Hawaiian Islands to spend the winters. We thought that sounded like an excellent idea and we came here to explore. It was love at first sight with Kauai's North Shore! And then, to have found this place was completely off the charts!
While we are here, we spend a lot of time working on the grounds and also enjoying time with family and friends who always seem to find their way to our doorstep!
To be back a few steps from the busy world is a gift. To be awakened in the morning by bird and river song is a jewel. To wander these grounds is a pleasure.
A River House is a spectacular and beautiful getaway set in lush tropical gardens and along a roaring river. A touch of real Hawaii as well, though close to more touristy venues, incredible beaches, and challenging hikes. Great privacy and peace. Owners take pride in property and obviously enjoy sharing it when they are not there.
Even in rainy season, a delight! Would recommend to anyone without reservation.

My girlfriend and I spent a full week at the Jungle Riverhouse. We had a magical experience ... got incredibly lucky with gorgeous sunny and warm weather the entire trip ... The river, the stream, the beautiful island and all the fruit trees will always stay etched on my memory. This was such a wonderful trip and such a magical place to be. It isn't the oceanside beach sort of stay - if you're looking to be right on the water ... not for you. But if you are looking for an amazing place with quiet, beauty, and majesty ... you've found your calm oasis amidst lifes hustle and bustle...
My first visit to Kauai and I truly scored with getting this place. Found out about it from my friend who had stayed there a couple of years ago, so I decided to check it out. I really needed a pieceful, quiet and cozy place to get away from the big city rush. The only thing you should know is no matter where you go in Hawaii, you are not getting away from noisy roosters, and this place wasn't an exception, but trere were definitely not as many of them here as in town or by the beach. I loved having my morning tea on the porch overlooking the mountain and watching the sunrise... (every time I close my eyes and try to disconnect from every day life, I imagine myself being at the Riverhouse).
Oh, and I did have "my own" freshly squeezed juice every other morning cuz there are orange and tangerine trees on the property ;))
If there is anything like Paradise does exist, that place is "a piece of mine"...
I've stayed at Jungle Riverhouse five times. Not once have I seen moldy curtains, torn furniture, or multiple cats. What I've experienced each time I've stayed at this property is beautiful tropical landscaping, very comfortable accommodations, and thoughtful improvements with each successive stay. This property is particularly well-designed for small groups. There are more than adequate spaces for people to congregate, but the separate rooms allow for as much private time as one might need. And Chuchee, the cat, is the sweetest, most gentle cat I've met. I think she makes this property feel like a home instead of a sterile rental. All of the things the reviewer, Beth, complained about (cat, no dishwasher, no AC) are clearly disclosed in the property description. In addition to finding aloha somewhere else, I hope Beth acquires reading comprehension skills.
My wife and I stayed at this rental during the week of June 1, 2013, and the grounds and rejuvenation you receive are more stunning than the pictures convey (if that is possible). I fail to see how anyone could give this property one star simply because the cat knows how to open the sliding screen. We loved the laid back cat (Chu Chee), but yes, she knows how to slide open the screen door. We solved this by placing something convenient (I forget what) on the deck in front on the screen door where it meets the door jamb (a simple fix).
This property will not disappoint you if you're having trouble deciding. Frankly, you'll find yourself wanting to sit on the lanai of the main house for hours.
We were not happy here. We checked, and were told the cat/s do not come inside becasue we have one in our party allergic. Unfortunately, the "outside" cat is not. Not only was there one cat, but three, and the one cat can open the screen door--unbeknownst to us. The cat (s) came in at night, jumped into beds; etc. Two of us were bitten by one of the three cats. We love pets, but the cats are obviously in the house all of the time and this made us very uncomfortable. We also found the location wonderful, but the home very ill kept. Mold on the drapery, torn furniture, no dishwasher, old food in the frig and just well below normal rental standards anywhere on the island. We've rented four properties. When we contacted the owners regarding this, they were unresponsive and acutally a bit aggressive--saying we came too early, and it was our fault not to lock the doors. No AC, hard to keep everything shut. Note: do not accept credit cards and "cleaning" fee is very high. Reviews may be skewed because you have to wait 30 days for deposit refund to be mailed.
Breathtaking!!! This home and the grounds are magnificent! We were joined on this long awaited vacation with my parents, my brother and his wife, and our three children. My parents stayed in the main house and used the master bedroom. The main house is where we spent much of our time as a family cooking (everything you could possibly need is provided in this kitchen), spending time on the lanai looking out over the rivers, observing the extraordinary landscaping and gorgeous views. We searched the property for different fruits and enjoyed making fresh delicious OJ in the mornings. My husband and our three children stayed in the cottage. They had a portable crib, a pack n' play, a monitor, baby linens, a few toys, a high chair and a booster seat! It was awesome! I was relieved from the stress and expense of having to pack so much stuff for the kids! In addition, they had plenty of beach gear for us to use! My brother and his wife stayed in the birds nest and were very happy. This property was absolutely ideal for our family as it allowed for everyone to be together in one beautiful house but also provided separate sleeping arrangements and we all had our own space whenever we needed it. I highly recommend the Riverhouse, we seriously can't say that enough! Its beauty is one to experience. I'd recommend bringing along some bug spray at night. Those tropical mosquitos can get you. Our family will never forget our time here and we truly hope to return in the near future. We were beyond thrilled. Thank you!!!!
The famous Na Pali Trail starts less than 5 miles from Riverhouse. It is a 11 mile hike into valleys and beaches that are completely undeveloped. It is a hike best done with at least a 3 day timeframe.
Other epic hikes are also available not only on the North Shore but also throughout the island.
The beaches also provide beautiful and long stretches of the best sandy walks ever!
But be very careful - you could just fall in love with Kauai!
