Byam house nestles in a beautiful hillside just above the white sands of Galleon Beach. There are four separate and very private bedrooms each with its own shower room. There are two double bedrooms featuring their own private balconies with stunning views across the bay towards the caribbean sea. All bedrooms have A/C, ceiling fans and mosquito nets over the beds. Tucked beneath the house there is a laundry room with a large capacity washing machine.
The house has benefitted from recent refurbishment, including new kitchen units, fridge / freezer, washing machine and soft furnishings. The kitchen opens onto the verandah where there is a large dining table. The kitchen also opens onto the garden at the rear so there is always a cool breeze blowing through the house. For those preferring to shelter from the sun indoors, there is a comfortable sitting room that has views over the bay.
The house boasts its own private swimming pool surrounded by a large area of decking and sun beds. The two twin rooms have large french windows that open on to the decking beside the pool. The garden at the front of the house leads down to the beautiful unspoilt sand of Galleon beach, which is a mere one minute stroll, where guests may also take advantage of a private beach area with ample shade, they may also make use of beach chairs, and kayaks, which are available to guests free of charge.
Just across the crystal clear blue waters of English harbour sits the historic Nelson's Dockyard which is as rich in naval history as it is in local culture, food and hospitality. You can discover the forts and cannons that once protected the harbour, and you can't fail to spot the odd anchor still resting in the very spot where it was once laid down by Nelson's fleet. The dockyard itself is a triumph of restoration, incorporating local shops, bars and restaurants, which blend beautifully into the Georgian elegance and grandeur of one of the most historically important and prestigious dockyards in the world.
The unbeatable location and surroundings of English Harbour mean that the elegance of Byam house, with it's stunning verandah, pool and balconies, is only the beginning....
Arriving at Byam House after a long journey was an absolute joy. We have stayed here before two years previously and had looked forward to returning since booking our flights six months ago. There have been several improvements since our last visit, most notably a new kitchen. This room leads directly onto the large verandah where we took our meals and is one of the best features of the house with it's stunning views. Catering for eight people was made easy by the layout and we ate most of our meals at the house despite the number of good restaurants nearby. The bedrooms were spotlessy clean and allowed all staying privacy and comfort as the outlook from them was facing the sea.
I must mention Miriam our maid who came daily and from whom nothing was too much trouble, she is delightful.
This was a wonderful holiday much enjoyed by all our party, and we would not hesitate to return. As a bonus, very few mosquitos!
We give this property two stars because we spent a significant amount to stay here 10 nights and the condition of the house does not match that price. The location is amazing: a 30 second walk from Galleon Beach, an easy water taxi ride to/from Nelson's Dockyard, and a short hike to Shirley Heights. The house condition, however, is not amazing. The main refrigerator has rust down the front and the second refrigerator is super old and gross. The utensils and plates are mismatched, the gas range and gas oven ignition does not work and the house had no working lighters we could use, and the coffee pot spills everywhere. In the master bedroom the door screens were all ripped, the shower curtain was ripped, the toilet paper had no holder and no trash can. The mattresses in the other bedrooms were very firm and the box springs were so old and dilapidated we could see the rusty springs. Many of the lights were very temperamental and the 4th bedroom the drawers were barely functioning and the screen door was off the hinges. The iPod dock only plays if you play with the cord for about five minutes. One of the dining chairs was broken. There were a lot of mosquitoes, but only two mosquito candles and one small coil until we went and bought a bunch. In general, the entire house needs updating: new linens, new tile, new furniture, new appliances, etc. The owner has an intro letter excusing the home's condition and saying "that's Antigua". What a load of garbage! We met the people who stayed before us and they described the home as "quirky", which is code for "not good". For the amount we paid I can stay a lot of nice places so I would not stay here again or recommend it at this price.
If you want an away from it all holiday with easy access to all that is happening in English Harbour this really is the place to be! We were a little worried that going out of season, we wouldn't have had things to do. We shouldn't have worried as not only was there still plenty to do, there were no crowds to spoil it all. The house is literally a hop, skip and jump to the most beautiful quiet beach. We loved Miriam the Housekeeper, and she pointed us to some great places to eat. The kitchen was a little tired, but I understand that it was to be replaced immediately after our visit.
The whole Island is easily accessible from this base, and I would definitely return to Byam House if back in Antigua
Byam House is surrounded by lush tropical plants which affords it great privacy whilst at the same time being literally a stones throw from the most idyllic beach. The verandah that leads from the kitchen and sitting room overlooks the swimming pool, the bay and up to one side Shirley Heights. Breakfasts on the verandah are bliss. We enjoyed it so much that we tended to eat in most of the time! The pool is perfect for cooling off & is surrounded by a beautiful decked area. The bedrooms all look out towards the bay, the two on the upper level having their own balconies and superior views, the master bedroom in particular is spacious and comfortable. Miriam the housekeep is an absolute gem as well as a fountain of knowledge about local people and produce. We are greatly looking forward to returning one day, to enjoy the early morning walks up to Shirley Heights, to pick our own pawpaw and tamarinds and to swim in the safest of bays.
A really great location and very comfortable home, Miriam who looked after the house was excellent and so helpfull, a gem. Although so close to the beach, the house pool was perfect for lazy holiday swims.Nelsons dockyard very close and so interesting Whether eating at home or out it was good. We have found out that Rum Punches vary in taste so had to continue trying them all!
The when, maybe we should have researched if May was the best month, as low season, so quite a lot of places shut. But this didn't spoil our stay. Disappointment that the Restaurant at Galleon Beach was closed.
Everyone we chatted to were friendly and helpfull.
A perfect holiday destination for a large family or group. Set just above a crescent of sandy beach the outlook is idyllic - blue sky , blue sea, and tropical plants.
The house is so arranged to give everyone privacy and space without feeling antisocial or isolated. The house is beautifully appointed with a large covered verandah for shady relaxation and dining, while the pool offers large decks for sunbathing.
The beach which is no more than two minutes away provides perfect and safe swimming.
And in the vicinity a short water taxi ride away is the bustle and gentility of English Harbour and Nelson's dockyard with cafes, shops and waterside restaurants - and some stunning yachts. And for those that party (and even those that don't because it is worth a visit for the music and views) Shirley Height on a Sunday evening is to be recommended
I cannot think of a location which offers more and I would strongly recommend it.
The house is in a wonderful location on the beach at Galleon Beach in English Harbour. The beach is safe, quiet and an absolute paradise. A short boat or car ride away is Nelson's Dockyard where Nelson built a naval base on the deep water harbour. Many of the old buildings have been renovated and now house a museum and a couple of shops and bars. It is a fascinating place to visit.
On the hill above the house is Shirley Heights. You can hike up the trail to the top. The view from here is amazing. Every Sunday night there is a BBQ and party here and you can watch the sunset and dance to a live band.
We always say that there is something for everybody in English Harbour. You can hike, swim, sail, snorkel, dive (there is a dive school), kayak, lie on the beach, look at historic remains, play golf (at Jolly Beach), watch cricket, ride (there is a riding school where you can hack to a huge deserted beach), read, relax, eat and drink. What more could you want!
