Lovely rural Spanish villa on the outskirts of national park

I was attracted to book a week in Alhucema by the lovely photos of the old Spanish house with the little pool and it certainly did not disappoint. For those who want a romantic or family escape in a genuine old Spanish house full of character and interest, away from the modern appartments and villas, this is the perfect escape.

My husband and I love history, culture and good food and wine and this is all available here. You can tell this house has been loved and nurtured over the decades and being someone's "home" rather than just a holiday let, makes all the difference. It is so well equipped and full of interesting books, paintings and plants with lovely little gardens and the perfect pool for my two little boys.

While they splashed to their hearts content, I could sunbathe and read on the sun loungers, while my husband, who is not mad on the heat, lazed in the hammock under the wonderful old veranda with a cool beer. There is a wonderful view down the valley towards the coast and we sat out most evenings after a lovely meal in the nearby village, Frigiliana, or in the bar just up the road, when the kids had gone to bed. We watched a shepherd move his flock up the valley for hours one evening and the sound of their bells was so evocative. Another night we watched the most amazing thunder and lightening storm from the comfort of the veranda.

We went down to the coast at Nerja when we wanted some beach time and a more touristy feel. The caves are amazing and should be world famous. Frigiliana is a lovely little white washed village with back alleys and narrow steps, lots of places to eat and little shops to get wonderful Manchego cheese and Serrano ham, and of course good wine at great prices! The tiny hamlet of El Acebuchal deep in the hills on a dirt track road is a must for a wonderful rustic lunch in the only bar there.

Tim was very efficient and helpful with answering my questions in advance of our trip and met us there to show us around on arrival, which really helped. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who wants to see the real Andalucia, while still being near enough to the touristy side when needed. We will be back!
