SPACIOUS 6PRS HOLIDAY HOME NR PRADES, VIEWS OF CANIGOU, GRT WALKING/CYCLING AREA

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Prades - Le Barn 66

Quiet location, great views, private roof terrace+courtyard, lots of parking

This property is available from June through to the end of Oct. 2014 will only be the fourth year that this fully renovated barn has been offered for rental. Total floor area is 130sqm. It is in a quiet location in a traditional village 4 km east of Prades. There is plenty of off street parking immediately outside the house, with room for 2 more in a fully enclosed, secure courtyard.

The accommodation is very versatile with 3 twin bedded rooms (all 12M2), 2 on the ground floor with large bathroom + shower + separate toilet. A further bedroom with twin beds is on the first floor, off a spacious, open plan lounge/dining area and kitchen (50M2). This bedroom has its own separate shower and toilet facilities sited off the utility room adjacent to the kitchen area This house retains its original beams, and several exposed stone walls and a mono pitch ceiling with clerestory windows to a very sunny private roof terrace of 18sqm, accessed by a spiral staircase just outside the kitchen. It is south west facing and very sunny all day with views of Canigou and the Tet valley. There is a laptop and ADSL internet for guest use.

Travel to and from the area: Ryanair flies to Perpignan (30 mins), Gerona (Spain) and Carcassonne (both 1.5 hours) and many major airlines fly to Montpellier, Toulouse and Barcelona (all approx. 2hrs). The TGV stops in Perpignan where you can connect to Marquixanes/Prades by local bus or train or you can take an overnight sleeper,London-Perpignan (change in Paris) and arrive refreshed the next morning.

The owners drive regularly and it takes 11/12hrs from Calais going via Paris and the magnificent Millau bridge or stop in the Auvergne on the way down to break the journey.

Additional faclities: This property has a large downstairs courtyard-35sqm, that provides a great deal of shade in the summer months, and extra security for the property as the only access to the house is through the courtyard. There is a small inset 'privacy' door for easy access to the courtyard. This is an excellent area for storing all the beach gear, bikes, and other holiday paraphernalia safely. The owner is offering use of the 2 bikes stored in the courtyard as part of the rental and body surfboards to be found in the downstairs store room. There is a 24' LCD TV with integrated DVD player for DVDs/harddrive material only (note no TV reception) and a library of popular films for all ages available plus a second smaller combo unit . There is also an Ipod/MP3 docking station for music

Marquixanes and some special attractions: Marquixanes has its own rather excellent bakery/patisserie/coffee shop that supplies the surrounding villages; a village shop with internet cafe and bar plus newspapers; a seasonal fruit and veg shop stocking all the local produce such as cherries, nectarines, strawberries, melons etc Plus a local cave and wine shop.

The area boasts two wild animal parks where you can see wolves, bears, big cats etc in very natural surroundings, both open all year round:

Casteill Animal Park-15km away

Based in the ski resort of Les Angles-50km

The Costa Brava is less than 2hrs drive away for a different day out, and nearer to home visit the beautiful walled harbour and beach of Collioure, which represents the start of the French Costa Brava-webcams available on www.cg66.fr

The owners are keen walkers and would be happy to help with suitable itineraries. There is a full set of guide books and local maps provided to help, and some inspiring photographs around the place.

We are both keen walkers and skiers and have been walking in this area for 8 years now. Once in a while we also tempt our 2 children of 23yrs and 25yrs out for some ski-ing or in our daughter's case, time on the beach, so it has been a real family home for home for us

Brian and Sue Churchill purchased this house in 2003

We bought it for the ski-ing for all of us, the beach for our daughter but the walking has turned out to be the best kept secret for us both. The weather never dissapoints, if it rains, it lasts a day or two at most and very often you can drive up the valley and rise above any cloud sat in the valley

The house is so flexible to live in, whether it be two or six people and easy to run. We love the variety of things to do, the climate, unspoiled walking with levels to suit all types of walker, and the numerous good quality clean beaches plus great sightseeing. You never run out of things to do. And the terrace just ends the day perfectly for us with views of Canigou and sun until late in the evening after a hard day doing what you want.

UNE SUPERBE MAISON AU PIED DU CANIGOU

  • 5 out of 5

WONDERFUL HOLIDAY HOME IN BEAUTIFUL AREA!

  • 5 out of 5
Just arrived home after a fantastic ten days at 'le barn 66'. Having driven from Carcassonne via the scenic route through Limoux, Axat and over the Col de Jau and stocked up on provisions at the Super U in Prades we arrived to find the property clean, well-maintained and just as it had been described on the Holiday-Rentals website. We particularly enjoyed the complimentary bottles of local wine which were most welcome after a long day of travelling!
Le barn proved to be the perfect base for our walking holiday. We never had to travel too far from the property to start each walk in one of the valleys surrounding le Canigou. The scenery in the area is absolutely beautiful and it was lovely to be able to see Canigou each morning from the roof terrace. After a hard day's walking it was great to have such a comfortable home to return to. The kitchen was extremely well stocked and the living room area was ideal for relaxing. Although there were only two of us there would have been plenty of room for a bigger party. The house has a really homely feel about it.
Sue and Brian had been most helpful with the information they had provided before we arrived and there was a fantastic number of maps and walking guides to help us plan each day. We bought our bread and papers each morning from the local tabac/cafe and can thoroughly recommend the restaurant we were pointed towards at Belesta.
All in all we had a wonderful break and would thoroughly recommend this property as a comfortable base for either walking or exploring the area in general.

Owner's Response: It was a delight to rent to Chris and Ruth, and to discover they enjoyed all the same aspects of LeBarn that we do. We were very glad that the information we left could be put to such good use, and that the sun shone for them.

A GEM OF A FIND -IDEAL FOR BEACHES AND MOUNTAINS

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at the barn in August 2009 and brought along one of our sons and his friend (both aged 15).The barn and location was excellent for all of us.

The accommodation is a very tastefully restored barn conversion. The accommodation was very flexible and every we needed was on hand. The roof terrace needs special mention-it is an excellent place to take in the breathtaking views of the Pyrenees .
The accommodation was very clean and modern and was easy to find as the village is located on the main route from Perpignan to the Pyrenees.
The village has a bar , a bakery , a newsagents , several grocers and a very impressive high rope climbing centre set across and around the river. The boys spent a full afternoon on the ropes course and loved it.
We divided our time between trips to the coast to explore various beaches (snorkelling was superb) , we swam alot at a very large local lake complete with lifeguard patrols ,we even went as far as Carcassone to marvel at the castle.
Going inland we had a wonderful visit to Andorra and had to stop nearly at every viewpoint to take photos-the views are amazing. We discovered that even in the mountains there are well equipped open air pools-it is a wonderful feeling to be swimming and sunbathing with the high Pyrenees over your shoulder.
We visited the local ski centre and took the cable car up to the top-all of a sudden you are at 2000M and can enjoy the fresh air and
spot vultures and enjoy the lovely mountain flora and fauna.
We also loved walking a via ferrata type walk nearby.

Whether you are into walking,sunbathing,swimming,climbing,biking,bird
watching, fishing, outdoor pursuits, photography or flora and fauna this barn is excellently equipped and very well located.
I cannot recommend the barn enough for its facilities and the potential to explore the breathtaking Pyrennes.
We hope to book the barn again!

WHAT A FIND! GREAT FOR BEACH AND MOUNTAINS

  • 5 out of 5
We were really impressed by the high level of furnishings and equipment and couldn't think of anything that could be improved. We love the exposed stone walls, the wooden floors upstairs and the roof terrace with views of Canigou.

For us, it was a fantastic base for exploring the area - the flat sandy beaches of the Med, walks in the foothills of the Pyrenees. We particularly enjoyed the Little Yellow Train and Prades market on the Tuesday and being able to fetch our breakfast within minutes of the house from the local bakers.

Sue made us feel really welcome through her friendly and efficient communication. We have resolved to make the time to return, as so much of the area remained unexplored.

AN ALL ROUND LOCATION AND EXCELLENT ACCOMMODATION

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at the Barn the end of Sept 2009 a walking holiday. The barn itself is beautifully appointed with 3 good bedrooms, 2 of which are at low ground level, and are therefore cool during the warm summer, but cosy in the cooler months. The lounge is great, where you can expand into the generous space, whilst still talking to the person cooking in the kitchen area. All facilities are there, and you can park your car out of the sun, have a fabulous barbecue on the roof terrace, and shower in the downstairs wet room or the upstairs shower. A great feature of the Barn is its location in a really interesting village, especially the very old part in the immediate surrounds. In the village there are a couple of cafes, and a good wine shop. However, for everyday shopping it is only a short hop to Prades where there is everything you are likely to need.
The countryside is extremely attractive, with gentle walks, beautiful mountain scenery and very typical French food and wine. If you are game for it you can extend the walks to the mountains where it is a bit cooler. The views are fantastic. Our preference, however, was to walk in the autumn when it is a good walking climate. Another great feature is the closeness of Perpignan where the shoppers can have a field day. There are masses of good quality shops and handy little French shops. For the beach lovers the resorts to the south of Perpignan are very easily reachable and provide both the charm of old fishing ports with the high quality sandy beaches. If you do go there, don’t forget to buy some of the anchovies that are the main catch in the area, and are sold in every shape and form in the harbour side shops.
If you are an angler don’t forget to bring a compact rod. We’ve had some terrific trout fishing in little streams. And, of course, you can go to some of the very little fished lakes to fish for trout, with permits easy to get and very cheap.
A great holiday location all round and super well equipped accommodation

GREAT ACTIVITY AND BEACH SUMMER HOLIDAY

  • 5 out of 5
August 2010
The barn has been the perfect base from which to explore this interesting area. Numerous vineyards, orchards, stunning mountain scenery and villages are on the doorstep and the coast only a short car ride away.
This property has been beautifully restored and combines lots of character with all the modern day conveniences to make it a relaxing and very comfortable holiday home. We have really enjoyed eating outside on the roof terrace in the evening under the stars sipping our wine.
Thanks to Brian and Sue for a great stay and the useful information on beautiful walks and places to go.

Located in a quiet traditional village with plenty of parking, 4km east of Prades, a thriving market town. It is 5 min. walk to the 1€ bus or train station to Prades, Perpignan and the coast. There is a popular swimming lake + inflatables at Vinca (3kms), outdoor pools at Ille-sur-Têt, Prades + Vernet and the village has its own exciting Go-Ape/Rafting centre. The nearest beaches of Canet and Bacares are 45mins drive, and the foothills of the Pyrenees are 20mins away. This area is superb for cycling and walking and offers many unusual tourist sites-the sandstone stacks of Les Orgues, the thermal baths at St Thomas, the limestone caves and fortified city of Villefranche which is also the home of the narrow guage 'Train Jaune', the abbeys of St Martin+St Michel de Cuxa, the Priorys of Serrabonne+Marecevol. All these sights and more are documented in a guide provided at the house by the owners providing you with a complete set of self guided walks.

Also see: www.lebarn66.com

Golf: The nearest golf course is at St Cyprien which offers a good dune/links type course over 27 holes. Local beaches are nearby if you need to drop the family off. Plus the nearest water-park is only a few kms away at Aqualand of St Cyprien-what an ideal combination! If you want a novelty round, then you could try the 9 hole course at the ski resort of Font Romeu

Ski: The ski resorts in summer offer a wonderful trip into the mountains and some easier flatter walking and can be a cooler option on a very hot day in the valley.
