PRETTY LITTLE COTTAGE, OWN COURTYARD IN DELIGHTFUL HONFLEUR, SLEEPS 3

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Honfleur

Perfect location, close to sea, old harbour and restaurants. Peaceful courtyard.

This is a lovely 110 year old cottage in a calm area in the centre of medieval Honfleur. It has an enclosed courtyard which catches the afternoon and evening sun, so is perfect for dining outdoors or enjoying your aperitif. It has an excellently equipped kitchen, a living room and shower room on the ground floor; upstairs is a main double bedroom with washbasin, and another bedroom/living room but with full size proper single bed. There is a TV (British Sky channels and French), DVD player, i-pod dock, CD player, radio and video player. The cottage is in a tranquil lane with no traffic but you can unload outside and there is free parking around the corner. It is a few minutes walk from the bustling heart of Honfleur with its cobbled streets, pretty old harbour, Saturday market and many restaurants and cafes. From the bedroom window you can see the slate rooftops, the church of Saint Leonard and the surrounding hills. Once you have seen Honfleur you will never forget it!

Parking: The cottage is in a narrow road for use only by the people who live there, so there is no traffic. There are four spaces to park in this road, where some of the houses are set back. One of these spaces is in front of my cottage, but does not belong to me. You can park here if it is vacant, otherwise there is free parking around the corner in a car park or free on road parking. You can always load and unload in front of my cottage.

Laundry facilities: There is no washing machine in my cottage but there is a launderette a couple of minutes away.

Bed linen and towels: Please bring your own duvet covers and towels. However, bed linen and towels are available at extra cost.

Guestbook comments from the owner

So good we're going back!

So good we're going back!

We stayed here in 2007 in September and loved the place. It's exactly what it says in the description. It is a small cottage but the rooms are cosy rather than cramped and the kitchen is very well-equipped, better than we expected. If there's going to be three of you then you may wish to consider that the path to the main bedroom is via the small bedroom. As a couple, this was not a problem (we used the second bedroom for our luggage and clothes). We found the bed in the main bedroom perfectly comfortable and we were grateful for the fully-functioning central heating on the few nasty days we had. On the good weather days, sitting out in the quiet courtyard with a glass of wine, munching on rustic bread, Neufchatel cheese and rabbit pate, all from the amazing Deauville market, was just heaven. There are lots of personal touches in the house, from books and games (some left by previous tenants for the benefit of later ones) to strategically placed helpful little notes from the owner. This isn't an impersonal holiday chalet. Actually, it felt more like we were housesitting for a friend. Replies to queries (by email) to the owner were prompt and helpful, as was the map of where to find free parking (a godsend!). We found the locals very friendly and helpful and wonderfully tolerant of our execrable French. Local restaurants are plentiful and pretty good to excellent (L'Ecailleur in the Vieux Bassin got our top marks). There are some wonderful museums and art galleries right there in Honfleur and interesting places within easy drive. We're going back again this September. 'Nuff said.

A Hidden Gem

  • 4 out of 5
We had a lovely stay at this charming cottage despite the weather which unfortunately was rainy but not unexpected at this time of year. The cottage is situated in a quite residential area within close walking distance of the Vieux Bassin and Museums which we are well worth visiting and we ate delicious food especially at L'Homme de Bois with it's welcoming open fire.
The kitchen was well equipped and we had breakfast and lunch in most days there is a boulangerie 2 mins walk away and a lovely Saturday market where we bought oysters. Despite the weather we had a very pleasant stay in Honfleur and the cottage was a welcome shelter from the storm.
I could imagine it really comes into it's own when one can use the little courtyard for eating or an evening aperitif when the weather is warmer.

Lovely quirky little house - well located.

  • 5 out of 5
Nice little French house in the heart of Honfleur - great courtyard for sitting in to escape the bustle of town - loads of kitchen utensils to make the most of fresh Normandy produce. We loved the quiet of the little street - but able to stroll to shops and harbour in 5 mins. Would definately recommend as suitable for couples who enjoy France. Petite but perfect.

Small & Quiet, OK for 2 people

Small but perfectly formed, a lot of charm and everything you could want.

A Spanish Taverna at the bottom of the road (young crowd but OK for a drink/tapas) and a boulangerie opposite that. Both 1 minute walk from the property.

The courtyard was nice, war and secluded and we ate here everyday (there is a BBQ in the shed).

I've seen people complaing that it was "disgusting" having the bathroom off the living area ~ erm, how is that more disgusting than having it off a bedroom? Get a grip folks.

Someone else said they were dissappointed there was no washing machine??? You're on holiday!!!

I would recommend it to friends and when my next visit to Honfleur is due, I'd go again.

Cute traditional property in the heart of Honfleur

  • 5 out of 5
This is the fourth time I have stayed at this property and I had a lovely time. Until a recent trip to the Azores (Sao Miguel) where the accommodation we had booked was not up to scratch, I never felt the need to write a review. But now I am a review/rant convert! I don’t think you could ask for better in terms of location or price. It is very central (5mins max walk from the door to the Vieux Bassin) and the rental costs are so reasonable. I’m used to London prices but to eat and drink out in Honfleur is expensive for what you get, so the fact that I could prepare meals in the very well equipped kitchen was a god send. There was also a good selection of Normandy guides/maps which I worked my way through. I had somewhere comfortable to wash, sleep, eat and relax in between soaking up Honfleur in summer sun. This was a first for me as I have previously only been in here in September (twice) and December [very thankful for the central heating!]. It was novelty to sit in the courtyard and enjoy the evening sun with a glass of wine this time.I never have any problems with the owner who is easily contactable and she’s recently got a cleaner which meant that this time I stayed I didn’t need to bring my own towels/sheets etc or bother with cleaning like I had on previous occasions. On the down side, I guess if you are staying for more than a week or so then there’s no washing machine, but I knew that when I booked. The mini shower room/ toilet was obviously not there when it was built but is perfectly fine and rather quirkily located off the living room – see the pictures to see what I mean.In terms of attractions – I’d particularly recommend the Satie Museum and the Boudin art gallery actually in Honfleur, a visit to Deauville and Trouville [right next to each other but very different + good beaches]. There’s also Notre Dame de Grace which is a beautiful little (C17th?) Seaman’s church-cum-museum up on the hill above the town which is a very peaceful place to be in.For a small place it’s well served for churches – the old wooden one in the town square (Saint Catherine) looks like a ship/arc from the inside and they have finally finished renovating Saint Leonard. I’d been waiting three years to get in – it’s been saved in a very self-effacing way. Honfleur’s just a nice place to mooch around the harbours and in the streets but there are some nice walks to be taken in the surrounding area. Oh – and try the Normandy Calvados and cider, especially the pink cider.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Sam, for your thoughtful review. It's always a pleasure to welcome you to my little piece of Honfleur. There is, in fact, a launderette near St. Leonard's church for future reference. I'm glad you like bed linen and towels being provided, it seems to work very well and even I have succumbed to their provision before my arrival now! I hope you keep coming back.

Honfleur cottage ref 81237

On arrival first impressions are important and the first thing we noticed was the yard was unkempt and full of weeds. Upon opening the front door the first thing we noticed was the smell, a real damp smell which stayed with us for the whole week. Despite buying air freshners and opening windows we could not get rid of the smell, it was awful. We had to do a lot of cleaning before we could settle in. There were 3 large damp patches on the wall in the bedroom which had fungus growing on it and a damp patch in the ceiling. We have photographs to confirm this. The bed was the most uncomfortable we have ever slept in and had a massive dip in it that made sleep very difficult. We e mailed the owner and she apologised and said maybe the house was not being aired correctly. The other issue we had was that the shower and toilet opens on directly to the lounge and you had to leave the door open to aid airing. To be fair, the house is ideally situated for looking in and around Honfleur, its just a shame the description did not match the reality. Since we arrived home the owner says she has sorted out the issues we found, which may be so, but is of little help to us who had a holiday ruined by what we found.

Owner's Response: I am saddened by this review. I have been renting my cottage since 1995 and have had perhaps 5 critical comments in almost 20 years. Indeed, some guests return again. I responded as soon as the above guests emailed me. I came out to view the cottage a few hours after they had left. My cleaner was there and there was no smell at all, nor indeed, for the week I was there. She insists the cottage was perfectly clean for their arrival. She was Head of Housekeeping in a local hotel and I have every confidence in her.
My cottage is not damp, but it is an old almost detached property with thick, stone Normandy walls and condensation can arise when warm air hits cold walls. I always tell this to guests and ask them to make sure they air the cottage and to take care. I accept there was a small water stain on the ceiling because a rainy winter and spring meant that some water had come down the chimney. This has now been rectified. I also accept that, in this instance, there were a couple of dark patches, certainly no fungus, from condensation on the chimney wall. It took me 2 minutes to clean off and never re-appeared. Nonetheless, it would not be welcome for anyone to arrive to find this. For this reason, I offered the guests a refund equivalent to one night's free stay, which they refused. They asked for a 25% refund. I, also, said I was willing to refund all the money had they wanted to move elsewhere. It is very important to me that people have a good holiday in my cottage.
As for the courtyard, I can only say that I usually go there more frequently to plant lovely flowers for guests but my sister has been seriously ill and then died in May. I have been travelling to Lancashire from London to care for her and therefore, had little time to get to Honfleur and had not been there since March. At that point, I also had to find a new cleaner because my neighbour who has looked after my cottage since 1995 moved away. My new cleaner will now air the cottage more and deal with condensation patches should this ever re-occur. It has been very stressful and upsetting for me.
I replanted the pots in the courtyard to make it pretty again for guests.
In my description of the cottage, it clearly states that the bathroom is off the living room. It was newly renovated when I bought it, and spacewise, it makes most sense.
As for the bed, I appreciate that we all have different tastes in comfort, it is a newish latex mattress.
My sincere wish is for you to enjoy your stay.

Honfleur is a perfect location and there is so much to do. You can wander around the quaint cobbled streets, watch the world go by at the many cafes and restaurants along the famous old harbour (vieux bassin), stroll out to sea, marvel at the oldest wooden church in France, visit the composer of Gymnopedie, Erik Satie's, birth home, visit the museums and art galleries in the place where impressionism began and spot where they, and later Raoul Dufy, painted! Or you can swim, play tennis, play golf, cycle and walk in the surrounding forests. Further afield are the Bayeux tapestry, the Normandy landing beaches, or the cheese and cider routes through pretty towns and villages. The seafood is delicious and not to be missed; but also make sure you try Calvados, the local brandy made from apples. Honfleur has so much to offer and once seen you will always want to return. The narrow, tall, slate clad houses of the old harbour make it one of the most photographed and prettiest towns in France.
