My love for Spain started in the 1970s when I started vacationing there with my young family. For many years, we owned a vacation flat in San Juan, close to Alicante in the Costa Del Sol. As a family, we spent many happy holidays there, building relationships with the local families, shopping in the local market and bodegas and watching my children grow. As family circumstances changed, we had to sell the flat but it had always been my intention to find another 'Home Away From Home' in Spain. As I approached retirement, I began to explore Spain more and ended up visiting Hinojares and found this beautiful house for sale. This is my second home that I visit regularly throughout the year. It is my pleasure to share it with you!

Chris Farquharson-Pratt purchased this house in 2010

Hinojares allows me to fully immerse myself in the Spanish way of life, whether it's shopping for fresh produce, getting the Menu Del Dia in the local restaurant or spending long evenings sitting in the bar in the town square eating Tapas and watching the world go by.

This is a Spanish home, furnished and appointed as if a Spanish family were going to live there. Our good friend Carmen runs the local shop and is also our local property manager with connections to the local activities in Hinojares.

AUTHENTIC SPANISH EXPERIENCE

  • 4 out of 5
We stayed at Casa Cazorla for a week over New Year, in time to particpate in the local Three Kings' celebrations. We found the house comfortable and well-stocked with wood for the burner, radiators and hot water bottles, all essential for this time of year! We particularly enjoyed lunch on the roof terrace, an oasis of calm that is also a gorgeous suntrap. The house is well-equipped and we particularly appreciated all the toys and puzzles for the children and the dvds for all of us. The local area is stunning, little known to the English but very popular with the Spanish, and with good reason. A week in the mountains enjoying the pristine nature is the perfect tonic. We particularly loved the easy access into the Cazorla National Park, and the variety of activities available, from exploring local towns - we loved the riverside walk in Castril and exploring Cazorla - to discovering waterfalls and trout rivers. The information provided to help you explore is excellent. Plus the local manager is English and very helpful and friendly. Do check out the local pizzeria - huge, fabulous pizzas and great value for money. Casa Cazorla provides the ideal base for exploring this beautiful corner of Spain.

OUTSTANDING HOUSE IN A BEAUTIFUL AREA

  • 5 out of 5
Hinojares was a longish but easy drive from Malaga and easy to find with excellent parking when we got there.

The village is like a postcard picture and immaculate but very much lived in by the friendly local community. With pretty rudimentary Spanish we got to know our neighbours.

The house is a typical, old, Spanish 'cottage' with beamed ceilings. It was spotlessly clean, much better equipped than anywhere we've rented before and so much more homely with eg dvds, books, magazines, games, plenty of decent kitchen equipment, even lots of toilet rolls, soap, washing machine liquid etc. We've been to loads of places where you have to find a shop asap or risk running out in a day or two! Not many welcome packs include homemade marmalade and wine but ours did!

The information book in the house gives lots of clear instructions (with photos) about how to get to various places of interest - we used it alot.

The local pizza restaurant made the best pizza I've had in a long time. We also particularly liked Restaurante 'La Bolera' at Embalse de Bolera.

The village stables gave us the chance to ride in the Carzorla national park, guided by Jesus the owner and his bilingual assistant. The horses are beautiful and there are rides for all abilities. We saw some non-riders being instructed on safety and the basics, but we had the chance to gallop across the sierra. The hats provided were good quality.

My husband, who is a beach lover, didn't miss the beach at all with some fabulous pools not too far away at Pozo Alcon and Castril - clean, cheap and with good changing facilities. We also went to Freila Beach and (our favourite) Embalse de Bolera - resevoirs of great beauty.

The weather during our July stay was hot and sunny and around 30 degrees.

We would recommend this house to anyone who wants to stay in 'real' Spain away from tacky, expensive and crowded tourist traps. It's peaceful and typically Spanish with the village being silent during the afternoon siesta, and residents out and about and sociable morning and evening - go with the flow and join in. (Siesta time is great for having swimming pools to yourself!)

Our teenagers loved it and want to go again. We think that anyone able to manage slopey streets and quite steep stairs would be physically fine. And if you are looking for a non-commercial, unpretentious taste of Andalucia, fabulous mountain scenery and village life, Hinojares is the place for you. We're going to go again!

OUR HOLIDAY AT CASA CAZORLA

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at Casa Cazorla in July 2011,as a family of 4. My Husband, our Daughter of 16 & Son of 14 & myself - and we had a wonderful holiday. Firstly, it was all easy to book & arrange, Gill, the property owner was so helpful with sorting dates etc & helping us with what is available in the area to keep the kids occupied. All correspondance was easy & prompt. When we arrived for our holiday we were met by Paul in Hinojares,he was really helpful, showed us where to park, helped with luggage to the house & gave us a very comprehensive gulide to the facilities in the house & village. We met his wife & boys (they have settled in the village from England a few years back) they were all really helpful & made us feel very welcome. The house is lovely, full of character, the photo's don't convey it's charm enough. I loved the traditional exposed beams. All the rooms are a good size & we had loads of space. I loved the roof top terrace, especially in the evening star gazing. The terrace has pretty pots with flowers, which added to the charm with plenty of seating. Again beamed around the edges & a bbq with a built in chimney.
The house was kitted out with everything you could possible need to have a relaxing stay, even an iron if you needed - I can say I avoided that one !
We ate at Alfonso's alot in the village (5 min walk) lovely food, great pizza traditionally cooked, made to feel very welcome. On that note all the locals were very friendly & we felt welcome in their lovely village. We swam in the local lakes, they were amazing, so warm, the kids much prefered that to the pool, although the pool in Pozo was very good. My daughter & I did the horse riding in the mountains, she rides, I DON'T !! but it was amazing. Beautiful views on very calm horses, a real holiday highlight. We did Kyaking which was on another beautiful lake - Paul arranged these for us & all arrangements went smoothly!
Basically I feel this location has alot to offer, the house was very relaxing in a peaceful area. If you like mountains, trees (loads of olive & pine) beaitiful blue lakes, water falls & lovely walks to explore this is all here with a very Spanish feel - I felt liked I'd experinced the culture of the locals. It's a lovely in the area as the Highlands of Scotland but with the heat !
My Husband & I had a wonderful holiday, as well as 2 teenagers having a great time too! We look forward to our next visit.
