About William Keene

The apartment is in a 17th Century building and is owned by William’s family whose ancestors owned the English Pharmacy (Farmacia Inglese) on one of the main streets of Florence, via de’ Tornabuoni.

William’s grandparents left before the war and moved to England where they then set up many similar pharmacies in the City of London.

You can still see the Farmacia on via de’ Tornabuoni which has now been turned into a shoe shop, but all the original wooden display cabinets for the medicines and tinctures are still there.

We hope you will enjoy discovering this beautiful historic City and visit again.

Why William Keene chose Santa Maria Novella

This property is in the historical City centre close to the train and bus stations and has good local shops but also a short walk to the main tourist attractions. The river Arno is also very close by that provides wonderful views. The Westin Excelsior and St Regis hotels are nearby arguably the two best hotels in Florence. The Police station is in the same street that adds to the sense of security. The apartment with its period features provides a link with the past.

What makes this apartment unique

Central location allows you to walk to all the tourist sites. Speciality shops in the same street provides great food and fabulous restaurants. Car hire available in the same street with Hertz, Avis etc. Free unlimited WiFi. On first floor so only one flight of steps. Air conditioning & washing machine.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Subject: Testimonial

Our Florence apartment was a perfect home away from home. Clean and well stocked kitchen. The bathroom has a terrific shower!! The dining and sleeping areas gave us our own personal space when needed. I felt safe since the neighborhood is surrounded by quality shops & hotels (2 Best Westerns right around the corner) which gave us a true sense of security. The little family owned market just across the street provided fresh fruits, vegetables, beverages, cheeses, & meats for home cooked meals when we did't want to eat out. What I liked most was we were close to all of the galleries & sites we wanted to see, and some we hadn't planned on seeing. Florence is an easy city to get around in. You can visit all of the famous museums & cathedrals on foot since our apartment was in close proximity everthing. Our host gave us excellent directions to get to the apt from the terminal and we were in there and comfotable just minutes after our train arrived in the station. I really loved visiting Florence and staying at 74 Borgo Ognisannti. It was my favorite apartment & city of our 24 day tour to Paris, Rome & Florence.

Sincerely

A Week In Florence

  • 4 of 5

We spent our week in Florence walking and viewing the city. Enjoying the restaurants and the friendly people of Florence. Our apartment was as nice as it looks in the photos and was in an ideal location. It was easy to reach within a five minute walk from the bus station and perfectly placed to reach all that the city had to offer. In the apartment we had everything we needed and the new bed was very comfortable. Cooking facilities were basic but we had no plans to do a lot of cooking. The apartment had a home from home feel to it and felt good to return home to after a long day visiting Siena or walking the countryside around Florence. The accommodation is in a one way street near a small junction which can get a little noising with passing traffic but soon got used to it and did not find it a problem, after all if you want peace and quiet don't stay in a city. Talking of noise , the only down side of this lovely old buildings exposed beamed ceiling was that you did sometimes here foot fall on occasion from the flat above but again this was not a big issue. Finally, the owners were very efficient and gave us lots of pre visit information about the accommodation, local shops and facilities, restaurants and emergency contact numbers which we felt was both helpful and reassuring. I would be very happy to stay in this apartment again if I get a chance to visit Florence in the future and would also recommend it to others.

Great Location; Not for Light Sleepers

  • 3 of 5

The property is centrally located near all the major tourist attractions and public transportation. We found most everything within walking distance. There are an abundance of restaurants and shops to choose from, with an excellent restaurant right across the street.

The apartment is in a very old building, with a narrow staircase. The WiFi worked very well, as did the washing machine (clothes need to be line dried or there is a laundry mat around the corner).

The apartment was very clean and stocked with dishes, pans, etc. Soaps were provided, but no shampoo. The towels were line-dried and a bit stiff.

Being able to look out onto a bustling street is charming during the day, but can be a nightmare at night, particularly on the weekends. We stayed in the apartment Friday-Monday and the first night, in spite of closing all shutters, windows, and doors, I was only able to get about three hours sleep due to the street noise (scooters, cars, buses, people shouting to each other down the street) and the neighbors in the building either coming up the stairs or pounding across the floor above your head. Sunday and Monday nights were quieter, and I had my earplugs, so I was able to get some sleep.

I did contact the owner; however, there's not much that he can do about the street noise. He was responsive and offered that I should try earplugs and/or sleeping medication. He is used to living amongst the noise of London, so he finds the apartment fairly quiet. We live in a suburb, with little or no street noise, so I found the noise overwhelming.

Personally, I would opt for a quieter location, but it depends on your ability to sleep through noise.

Owner's Response: Dear Judy & Allan, Florence is a beautiful elegant City that has plenty of things to see and do during the day or evening. As everything is within walking distance of the apartment you can see masterpieces of artwork at the Uffizi Gallery or Sculpture with the statue of David by Michelangelo at the Accademia followed by fantastic food and wine watching the lively street scene of people enjoying themselves with all the passion that is Italy and Florence. The building and Florence is old, magical, fun and fascinating. Whilst building specifications have moved on since the seventeenth century we have double glazing external and internal wooden shutters to reduce the noise of City life. Maybe as we already live in a City we do not hear it or more likely we are used to it and sleep soundly. We accept that a City has more noise than the countryside. Maybe that we are so exhausted at the end of the day that we don’t hear it. We do love Florence and everything that it offers. Kind regards William

Ideal Location in Beautiful Florence

  • 5 of 5

My husband, son and I stayed in this apartment for one week and it was perfect for exploring Florence. We purchased the 72 Hour/72 Museums Firenze Card and visited 26 museums in 3 days! Definitely recommend purchasing this card to avoid long lines at museums. We enjoyed the expresso coffee maker at 74 Borgo Ognisannti every morning with pastries from several nearby bakeries. So much so that we purchased an expresso coffee maker to bring home. Don't miss the terrific restaurant right across the street from the apartment. Walk over and make reservations for dinner. The food is fabulous and the owner is a treat. Every afternoon we threw open the shutters in the apartment and watched the locals go about their daily routine with a glass of Chianti from the local market. The apartment is very clean and everything worked well. Elisa was welcoming and made us feel comfortable from the start. We would definitely return to this apartment. Joyce

Cozy with perfect location

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful stay in Florence, the location of the apartment was perfect and the recommendations of places to eat we found helpful. Apartment cozy and perfect for 2 to stay.... The only reason we did not give it 5 stars is because the bed was not great.....no support, needs replacing. We found the ease of booking and meeting up with Elisa great and very smooth. If we find ourselves back in Florence we would definitely stay at the apartment.

Lovely, ideally located apartment in Firenze!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in 74 Borgo Ognisannti. The apartment is spacious and very comfortable. During the day we would open the shutters and let the vibe of the neighborhood envelope us. At night once the shutters were closed and secured the apartment was very quiet and almost soundproof, not to mention very dark. We both slept very, very well. The bed is a comfortable king.

There was good communication with the owner throughout the renting process. Everything easy and straight forward. We were met by Michela and her daughter who ran through all the key points. Please be aware there is currently no TV or WiFi for handheld devices, only a Wind USB stick for laptops. I am told this is in the process of being rectified. As much as my husband and I enjoyed going to a cafe or bar in the evening to take advantage of free WiFi there were some evenings, especially after a busy sightseeing day when we would have welcomed staying Home and accessing email and social media from the comfort of the apartment.

The location is ideal. Close enough to be an easy 5 minute walk to the train station. Many excellent restaurants on Borgo Ognisannti (Il Profeta and Baccus to name just 2) and the surrounding area (Il Latini for a wonderful, Tuscan feast!) Cafés, bars, pastry and fish shop and plenty of small delis and markets to pick up provisions since the apartment has a fully functioning kitchen.

My husband and I hope to return to Firenze someday and would welcome staying here again.

Thank you William, Elisa & Michela. : )

Charming, spacious and well located.

  • 4 of 5

My mom and I stayed here during a 12 night trip through Italy for her 65th. This apartment was great. Super comfortable bed - best of the trip - and spacious, so room to spread out and chill. We took advantage of the washing machine, which was a nice little perk. Elisa met us at the apartment and gave us a few tips about the apartment and area. It's right across the bridge from the Oltrarno and the best restaurants in Florence, in my opinion, so that was fantastic. Also pretty close to everything when walking around and seeing the sights.

Given that the building is really old, there are a lot of little things to be aware of that came in handy, like resetting the circuits if you were using too many outlets, etc. Full disclosure, if you are older or have any kind of health, knee or walking impediments, then you would have difficulty getting up the steps since they're super steep, but it is only one floor.

I would have given this apartment 5 stars, but we did encounter a few snafus that the owner has hopefully addressed. The shower, while hot and big enough, was falling off the wall and made the situation stressful. They just needed to reaffix the bar holding the head, so no big deal, but stressful, especially since there is a cash deposit in play that's up for return at the end of the trip. (All worked out well in the end, but stressful, nonetheless.) Also, the worst issue was that the light switch in the bathroom over the mirror, not main lights, freaked us out the first time we hit it, since there is a short and it like popped loudly and made us scream and then shorted the lights. She did it, screamed, I fixed the breaker and flipped the switch and jumped. Really kind of freaky. So...as long as you're aware of this before hand or they fixed it, then it's fine. But that was like heart thumping scary.

That all said, I would totally stay here again. It's really super cute, not too loud, well located and lovely apartment. We both really enjoyed our four nights there.

Owner's Response: It is nice to hear that you thought the apartment was great with a comfortable bed and spacious. It is also good that you made full use of the washing machine. The apartment location is close to everything so it allows you to walk to all the sights and restaurants. The apartment is up one flight of stairs (approximately 20 steps) and has hand rails on both sides. The shower bar and lights in the bathroom have been fixed. We are delighted to hear that you thought the apartment super cute, well located and that you both really enjoyed your stay there.
