To reach the beginning of the ZONA VELHA City quarter (‘Old zone’) is about 10 minutes. Besides the ‘Art Deco’ MERCADO DOS LAVRADORES market, there are many restaurants, museums including Madeira Story Centre, The City Theatre – a copy of the original ‘La Scala’ opera house and art galleries including the one in the yellow Sao Tiago pirate fort right on the ocean front. 2 shopping centres at the bottom of the hill accommodate a Pingo supermarket open until 10pm and other businesses including a pharmacy.
