Stunning view, but...
The house is clean, spacious and extremely well located, with an amazing view of Hooper's Bay. The interior furnishings, bathroom fittings and appliances are somewhat worn and dated, however. And there were no basics such as tea, sugar or laundry detergent provided, which was a little surprising.
Contrary to the description provided, there is no Internet connection in the house, which had been a significant factor in us choosing to rent this property. And within minutes of lighting the stove to make dinner on our first evening, the gas supply ran out and wasn't replaced for the entire week. We understand that Exuma is a small island and that everything has to be shipped in, but there were two gas tanks and the reserve tank had also been allowed to run out. Our main concern was that the property manager did not proactively follow up about this, we had to keep calling each day.
Owner's Response: We are really upset that the renters did not find the house to their satisfaction. They are the first to have complained, and we have had many renters over many years. Some of the complaints we take full responsibility for, and some is the result of living on an island which is noted for the charm of slow pace and its relaxed attitude to life - making it a superb place to "get away from it all".
In answer to the points made, and in the order they came, I will try to explain and allay any future concerns.
The point about the interior being worn and dated is a fair comment. In the month of October 2013 we are refurbishing the main en-suite bathroom, and replacing the bath with a good shower. The existing shower room is going to have the walls retiled. New furniture is going in to update the old, and a new floor will be put in the master bedroom.
It is our mistake that laundry soap was not present but that has been corrected. Tea and sugar are not promised on our house description, but are usually there as the previous tenants usually leave them.
The Internet is provided via the phone line from Batelco. The whole island suffered at the same time from a problem they took a long while to resolve. However, our agent offered our renters a Wifi connection at the Resource Centre, half a mile away. They have Internet from satellite, so are unaffected by landline issues. Admittedly it is not convenient, but it is a free alternative not available to guests in other rental properties similarly affected.
Gas was completely our fault. We apologise, and will monitor the situation more closely in the future. Again island life came into play, as a quick refill was not possible - the promised gas took over a week to come from Nassau to the island's sole provider. However, cooking facilities were still available in the house, as was pointed out at the time, because the second kitchen had an electric cooker.
The agent telephoned daily to update our tenant about the gas situation, and failed to make contact on one day as they were out.
We appreciate the comments made, and have reacted to them where it is in our control.
