At the heart of the Riviera Maya, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, lies the quaint resort town of Akumal. It is nothing like the indistinguishable all-inclusive resorts that offer pampered isolation from their surroundings. Strung along three reef-protected shallow bays, in the midst of untold miles of underwater caves, it is a paradise for diving, fishing, snorkelling, swimming and sunbathing. It's convenient for exploring nearby Mayan ruins, colonial cities, contemporary Maya villages and jungle nature reserves. The house sits on a quiet lane facing a natural park in the neighbourhood of Yalku, within a minute's walk of the entrances to Yalku Lagoon and the beach at Half Moon Bay. Akumal also offers world class Yoga, and massages, nine restaurants and three dive centres, boutiques and stores. Day trips take you to Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Coba, Tulum, Sian Kaan, Xel Ha, Hidden Worlds, X-caret, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Cancun, Isla Mujeres; overnight to Merida or Holbox.
Other Activities: Swimming with sea turtles, Cave diving, Eco-Tours
Golf: The Riviera Maya is a golfer's paradise. In Akumal, less than a mile south of the entrance, lies the world class Bahia Principe Golf Course, 18 hole par 72 (Robert Tent Jones design). Puerto Aventuras Golf Course is ten miles north, 9 hole. Playacar Golf Course just south of Playa del Carmen about 20 miles, 18 hole par 72 (Robert Van Hagge design). North of Playa del Carmen are Mayacoba Golf Course 18 hole par 72 (Greg Norman design) and Iberostar Golf Course 18 hole par 72 (P.B. Dye design).
