Light and bright 2 bedroom flat in the centre of a market town. No car required

This recently renovated apartment is a little gem. The street level front door leads into your large private entrance room where there is plenty of room to store bikes, pushchairs, skis etc. Stairs lead up to the rest of the flat; a fully equipped modern kitchen, bathroom, separate WC, double bedroom, twin bedroom, bright & airy dual aspect living room with dining area & doors that lead out on to an internal courtyard where you can sit outside & enjoy the sun or BBQ. There are 3 small balconies and on Tuesday mornings you can look out over the fantastic weekly market that takes over the town centre. The apartment is well situated with the town square, shops, cafes, restaurants, tourist office & free car parking all less than two minutes walk. Prades also has a good playground, swimming pool (summer) and cinema. The train station is less than 10 minutes walk as is the bus station with all local buses only costing 1€. An excellent base for house hunters. WiFi available.

Things to do: The Conflent & surrounding area is rich in history & there are many sites to visit; Vauban built fortified towns like Villefranche de Conflent or Mount Louis, Cathar castles, Abbeys such as Saint-Michel de Cuxa or Saint Martin du Canigou, Fort Liberia, the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, plenty of Romanesque churches & hermitages & numerous museums. There are of course natural wonders as well; the Orgues at Ille sur Tet, the hot springs at St Thomas or Thues, the sacred Mount Canigou & the spectacular pink blanket of peach blossom that swathes the whole valley in the spring. If you are in need of a bit of retail therapy there are the weekly markets in most of the towns where you can buy gorgeous local produce, taste some of the excellent local wine and buy your lunch at the same time. But for more serious shopping why not head to Perpignan and wonder through the maze of tiny streets looking in chic boutiques or buying some of the locally produced arts and crafts. There's plenty to do!

Pampering and gastronomy: The naturally occurring hot springs, warm dry air & reportedly 300 days of sunshine a year has meant that this area has long been recommended to those looking for spas, health retreats or to 'take the cure'. Many of the establishments have been around for a long time & were particularly popular with the Victorians. These days they offer all of the latest treatments in lovely surroundings. Why not visit one of the spas at Molitg les Bains or Vernet les Bains or if you are suffering a few aches and pains after some skiing try the hot springs at St Thomas, Llo or Dorres.

If all that has given you an appetite then your in for a treat. There are several Michelin rated restaurants under an hours drive away, with a wide choice of local restaurants much closer. Whether you fancy a five course dinner or a simple snack there are a multitude of choices. There is a list of eateries in the information pack at the property and we are always glad to hear if you have found a new recommendation.

Things to do with children: You wont be short of things to keep the young or young at heart entertained. Within 30 minutes drive you can find the animal park at Casteil, the caves at Villefranche de Conflent and Fort Liberia. You could take the famous 'le petit train jaune' up into the mountains. In the summer it has some open air carriages so you can really take in the scenery!

There is the lake and beach at Vinca where you can swim in the summer, hire pedalos, trampoline and play on the bouncy castles. In winter there are always the ducks to feed.

You could sniff out some fun at the perfume museum at Mosset. Theres tubbing and canoeing at Marquixanes as well as carting, jumpers (stilts with springs) and climbing near Eus. Swing through the trees on ropes on the aerial assault course close by. Quad bikes are available for the teenagers.

Lovely little flat in town centre.

Having previously stayed at another property owned by Richard and Helena we decided to have a last minute break in this flat which is perfectly located in the centre of town meaning we didn't even need to hire a car. We came all the way from the UK to Prades by train and it only took just over 9 hours door to door.

The flat is well equipped, very light and airy, perfect for a couple or small family. The rooms are nice and cool when the temperature outside are rising! A proper kitchen with a dishwasher means making meals is easy and saves having to eat out every day - and you can get such great local ingredients in the Tuesday and Saturday markets.

We like all the little touches in this flat such as the wifi, freeview, restaurant guide, tourist literature, maps and books. Some holiday rentals can feel a little cold and unfurnished but this is a very homely welcoming place to come back to after a day of sight seeing, when you can indulge in a glass of local wine or two in the courtyard!

Fantastic winter break

We (2 adults & 2 kids) had a brilliant time in this apartment in Prades in January 2012. The apartment is fantastic ... minutes from the shops, restaurants, public transport, etc - it is also well heated with radiators and a wood-burner, although we sometimes sat outside as the temperature was over 15° most days.

There is a good kids' playground near the town hall and bus stop and trains to Perpignan, both 1€ per person (well worth a visit too!). The apartment was clean and well-maintained with all the needs for a family of 4. It was spacious enough to 'escape' from the kids... The private terrace being the best spot to unwind with a drink or 2! There are a couple of great bakeries nearby and markets on Tuesdays and Saturday. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a break/holiday in the area.

What is there not to love about this apartment?

The answer is nothing. Everything that is needed is here. I could not think of one thing that could be improved.

This apartment is definitely one of the best we have stayed in. We had every comfort and, of course, the location is just superb. We really loved Prades and the surrounding area.

I would definitely stay here again!

Nous avons réservé cet apparement pour 3 semaines, mon mari était en soin à Molitg Les Bains , station thermale qui se situe à 15 minutes en voiture de Prades.L'appartement était parfait , très confortable, une cuisine bien équipée,une literie excellente, une peite cour qui nous permettait de manger dehors si on le désirait car le temps était magnifique!!!! le plus c'était la proximité des commerces , boucherie -charcutier- traiteur à 200m , la marchande de fruits et légumes à 200m, boulangerie à 200m et 300m , distributeur pour retirer de l'argent à 250m, même une coop bio à 300m, un grand parking à gauche de l'appartement ;l'emplacement est idéal.Pouvoir faire toutes ses courses à pied est une chose très importante..
Le soir nous allions prendre un verre ou au restaurant , ils sont nombreux autour de la place .Très bon séjour .Très bon accueil.Si nous retournons à Prades c'est certain nous réserverons cet appartement. bonne continuation à vous .La région est magnifique, beaucoup d'excursions à prévoir .

Prades is the market town capital of the Conflent. The area is rural and predominantly agricultural, and is famous for its peaches and apricots. To the east you have the flat wide plane that leads down to the Mediterranean with the towns of Ille sur Tet, Millas and Elne. Visit the olive oil mill, the distillery, one or more of the many vineyards for a 'degustation' or the famous festival 'Féria de Millas'. A bit further to the East you have the beaches of Canet and the picturesque Collioure with its harbour, castle and lighthouse. Or take the motorway and you will be in Spain in under an hour. To the west of Prades the valley narrows and you come to the Villefranche du Conflent, keep going on the windy road or railway and you will find the interesting fortified village of Mont Louis with the training centre for the French Comandos, a solar oven and some magnificent views. A little further and you will find the ski resorts and the magical lac des Bouillouses - a real must visit.

Ski: There are several ski stations about an hours drive from the property. The most popular are Les Angles, Pyrenees 2000 and Font Romeu. All have hire shops for skis and equipment as well as bars, restaurants and other sporting facilities. You can use the computer at La Grange to check on ski conditions, pass rates etc. Ski season is usually from the end of November/ beginning of December until the end of the French Easter holidays.
