Overview

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday villa in Calheta - Casa Rosada

Modern 3 bed/2 bathrooms, large terraces, easy access to excellent walking

The perfect holiday destination. Casa Rosada is well away from the bustle of Funchal, though thanks to the new road system everywhere is now within easy reach. Moreover, some of the island’s top attractions are only a short drive away: within ten minutes you can be on Madeira’s largest golden sandy beach at Calheta, which also has a large marina and plenty of restaurants; or 15 minutes will bring you to the laurel, levada and waterfall wonderland of Rabaçal and the wide open expanses of the Paùl da Serra. Arco da Calheta is served by buses (15-minute steep walk to bus-stops), but car hire is highly recommended to enjoy all the area has to offer.

The spacious living/dining room has comfy seating for 6, a TV, DVD player, CD player/radio with USB input for mp3 players & WiFi. There is a wood-burning stove, plus portable oil-filled electric radiators for winter evenings.

The kitchen is equipped with a gas hob and electric fan-assisted oven, fridge/freezer, microwave/grill, electric toaster & kettle and plenty of cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery and glassware. A washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board are in the utility room with plenty of drying space in the garage. There is a guest WC on the ground floor.

The three bedrooms, all with stunning views, can accommodate up to 6 guests + infant in a cot. Master double bedroom + en-suite shower room with WC; bedroom 2 has a double bed; bedroom 3 has 2 single beds. Occupants of these two bedrooms share the family shower room with WC. Bed linen and towels are provided and changed weekly. A hairdryer is provided. A cot and high chair are available on request.

The villa is in a quiet area on a narrow lane with only a few houses beyond. It has an east-facing garden and upstairs balcony, a large south-facing patio area, panoramic sea and mountain views in all directions and a traditional built-in BBQ. There is private parking within the front gate.

Today we are sitting here in a storm in Casa Rosada – great house. Had several sun-drenched evenings on the terrace.

The kitchen here is well equipped and the location of the house has allowed us to have many beautiful walks in the area.]

A true 'home from home' - with a stunning view.

  • 5 of 5

Many, many thanks for sharing your beautiful hilltop retreat on the wonderful island of Madeira with us. We have enjoyed the full range of weather in February here, from lashing rain to warm accommodating sunshine (perfect for relief from the monotony of the current English deluge). You have made the house very attractive with a truly home from home appeal. The house notes,

instructions, spares of everything, wood burner, plentiful logs, suggested walks (which we did!), ‘comprehensive’ library and music collection all contributed to that homely feeling absent from self-catering apartments and hotel rooms. And what a setting – all topped off with the stunning view from the patio. Seven days was not nearly long enough and one wonders how you can tear yourself

away from this haven.

For any prospective travellers we would also wish to commend highly the management company that looks after this property. The ease of the booking process and responsiveness to enquiries is nothing short of amazing. The detail in the instructions for reaching the property was remarkable and the arrangements for taking over the property were smooth and efficient , exactly as described. If you prize worry free, easy booking on-line, with clear instructions and a personal guide to show you to the property you cannot fault this management company.

Up high and sunny

  • 4 of 5

We found Casa Rosada clean, well equipped and a good place to stay. Our children loved running around in the garden - not possible in Feb in England! The view from high up was great, we enjoyed watching the paragliders.

Owing to the house being high up, it could get quite cool at night in February. However there were electric heaters, and an excellent wood burning stove and a plentiful supply of logs, so it was not a problem.

Most people comment on the driveway approach - it is a bit of a fuss, but not daunting for a competent driver in a mid size car. Don't hire a Mercedes E Class or Ford Galaxy though! If it were not for the drive we would give the house 5 stars, but don't let it put you off.

The house is well located, with easy access East towards Funchal, close to a big supermarket nearby, and good for access to the North and West for great walks and scenery. The neighbours were friendly.

Casa Rosada without a car

  • 4 of 5

Have stayed here twice - once with a car and once without a car. Great accommodation and wonderful views, but the very steep approach might be a problem for some, as with my wife.Persuaded her to go back a second time , but this time without a car as, during our first stay, we had seen a local bus come up to the nearby restaurant each day. It was only during our second visit that we discovered that it was a school bus NOT a service bus! We still had an enjoyable time but, then, we are keen walkers and the walk to the nearest service bus kept us very fit.

Great holiday destination

  • 4 of 5

Casa Rosada was a lovelly place to base yourself for a holiday exploring Madeira. We went in May with the aim of doing some walking.

We met the managers of the property who gave us the key and told us a lot about the house and the surrounding area. They were very helpful throughout our stay. The house itself is well kept and was clean and tidy on our arrival. The kitchen was well equipped, the lounge has a TV, plenty of books and leaflets of ocal activities. The bedroooms were plently big enough and the living areas downstairs were spacious. The outdoor terrace was great, the weather was generlly pretty good whilst we were there and we made good use of the outdoor furniture provided.

The "3-wheel" entry to the drive prooved to be quite a source of enterainment but it was mastered after a few days!

There is a levada to walk along not far from the house which provides great views once you get up the hill to it! A must is the farmers market in one of the near by towns - the fresh fruits, many of which we had never seen before, were delicious. There are also plenty of little restaurants around the area to enjoy a pleasant meal in.

We stayed at this property over the New Year 08/09

  • 4 of 5

The property itself is well equiped and has plenty of space. Our double room had the best view, facing over the hillside and towards the sea. It was fun watching the paragliders come almost overhead.

The outside space and terrace were pleasant - however the weather wasn't particularly warm and sunny, although when the sun was shining it was very relaxing to sit outside and watch the sun go down.

On our arrival we were met and given our keys. At this point all we needed to know, was explained very well.

You need to be an extremely confident driver to reach the property, as the hill is very steep. But you do get used to it and it appears that generally driving on Maderia is a bit of a challenge on some roads.

As we were staying over the New Year, one of the main attractions was wanting to see the fireworks in Funchal on New Years Eve. Judith arranged this with the local hotel - we had an a Gala Meal and then were transported to Funchal. The food was extremely good for a buffet/self service and there was some entertainment. We quickly changed out of our party wear and left about 10.30 from what I can remember. Our coach took as and the other passengers to Funchal, we arrived about 11.15 and were taken to a sports stadium on the side of Funchal bay. Fizzy wine and other bits were given out. We were really just waiting for the fireworks, along with the hundreds of tourists and locals. They did not disappoint, exploding altogether around the bay, very loud but really impressive. We arrived back at the property about 1.30. The cost was not cheap but the whole eveinng was worth it.

The scenery and sea around Maderia is beautiful and it is essential to have your own car. Watching the sunsets from the coast were particularly enjoyable. We didn't find that many decent places to eat the food served is pretty much the same everywhere, although it wasn't bad by any means. The meat skewered on a herb twigg - was very nice and a local dish.

One thing that we did find with the property was it was very quiet most of the time. But on occasions at night we had some dogs who seemed to deliberately want to bark outside our bedroom window. Just need to shout out the window and shoo them away.

Overall I would recommend this property for anyone who wants to get away for some quiet time but have the luxury of fabulous views and a well equipped place to stay.
