Looking at the pictures again after being back in Colorado really stirs great memories. It was just my husband and myself and we wanted peace and solitude. We didn't spend much time away from the home, we ignored almost every tourist attraction as we were in paradise and never wanted to leave. The linens were very nice, we loved the outdoor shower and bath, and the landscaping... We can't say enough about the landscaping. We enjoyed all the details including the small shells in the walking paths and the orchids wrapping our linens on arrival. We loved the nightly rains and all the humidity. My skin never felt so nice. We loved the outdoor lighting at night and enjoyed watching the palm fronds wave in the breezes. We also loved the orchids growing on the trees. The flowers were amazing.
The pond was delightful for swimming and we grew to love the fish and the geckos. It was slightly inconvenient that our Verizon cell service didn't work at the home and yet, what a gift! By the time we left, we could care less that we had no cell service! It took Shangri-la to remind us that constant connection isn't THAT necessary and that we are humans and do not need our dog leashes (cell phones) on every adventure. Sometimes it is best to run free!
Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs
Shangrila is an oasis of island beauty. Private lava vent heated lagoon with lots of fish to see while snorkeling - large koi and bright yellow and blue schools of small fish. Lots of room to relax, private and quiet location close to Pahoa where groceries etc are readily available. Check out the gourmet hot dog truck on the way - you won't be disappointed. Sunday is the outdoor market day on the road to Hilo, worth going. Champagne Pond is located here too. So much good to say - just go is my best advice!!! Brady is a wonderful caretaker who will make sure your needs are met while there, and Joe makes awesome potpourri. Can't remember the gardeners name (so sorry!) you did a great job - both routine and the emergency need that arose due to wild winds while there - exciting to say the least.
Step onto the property and you immediately feel the peace and relaxation . We love returning , having been here many times , to this home with its wonderful swimming and the fish are amazing. We can't say enough about the manager, her dedication to making guests feel welcome is outstanding. We will be making our reservations for our next trip to paradise soon. Thank you for every little detail ! We look forward to returning to "our" vacation home. Fresh orchids everywhere ! Anthurium, special cookies, all our needs were anticipated and we are extra appreciative of the effort and thought put into making this the most wonderful restful vacation ever.
Thank you !!
ShangriLa is awesome. It very much reminded me of Bali with the outdoor style living spaces. How wonderful to have your very own WARM lagoon to swim in each day. It was so relaxing we didn't want to leave. I felt like I was on a retreat. It is very secluded and quiet and beautiful. My kids were in heaven too! We had everything we needed and the property manager was very welcoming and helpful with lots of local knowledge. I plan on returning to ShangriLa for sure and have been recommending it to all of my family and friends. YOU SHOULD GO!
The property manager was very helpful.
The vacation rental was spotless.
I was very happy with the location.
I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.
Overall, I recommend this vacation rental.
Shangri'la is sooooo gorgeous. To wake up in the morning and find yourself surrounded by lush green tropical trees and have your own private brackish water pool filled with kois, talapia, and also yellow tangs, uhus, and humuhumu's is nothing short of amazing. And have all the amenities too? Just awesome. We also enjoyed Champagne Cove, which was only a short walk away. My toddler definitely enjoyed herself as well, and loved swimming with the fishes, and making friends with those cute Big Island geckos. I'm looking forward to my return back to Shangri'la.
This unique property met and exceeded our expectations. We loved swimming in the warm, fish filled water. The outdoor master bath was amazing, and I loved the round house and screened in kitchen.
The location was perfect for an afternoon trip to the volcano. We also enjoyed shopping and people watching in nearby Pahoa.
Unbelievably unique experience! Shangri-La is an exotic, yet quaint atmosphere that gives one the feel that they are staying in the middle of a rain forest under beautiful trees, surrounded by the deepest colored flowers, exotic birds and amazing fish in your very OWN pond! Floating through this property is the way I spent every morning well after walking only half a block to watch the sunrise over the ocean! After swimming a few laps, I laid on a raft and enjoyed the natural beauty that this property offers. Complete privacy, on top of everything else, made this stay my favorite vacation yet! While it was hard to leave this property, I found time to venture Downtown and hang with the locals on a Friday night where live music played, kids and adults of all ages dance barefoot and delicious restaurants lined the main street. This area is also known for its snorkeling as you swim with some of the friendliest massive turtles you'll ever see. Sunday I'd suggest driving to the jungle where you spend a morning of worship expressing yourself with dance and music. After a truly magnificent spiritual few hours, you walk thru this magnificent property to be served a fresh, organic lunch! After all these adventures, the best part is coming back to the quiet, secluded property to play some music, drink wine & frolic through the beautiful nature that Shangri-La offers. A once-in-a-lifetime experience, I give this stay, hands down, 5 stars!!
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (a World Heritage Site), Sea Turtle and Dolphin Encounters, Botanical Gardens, Hawaiian Cultural Events & Festivals, Many State and National, Stargazing at Mauna Kea Observatory, Whale Watching, Helicopter Tours, Scuba Diving, AND Skiing (that’s right, skiing!)
Why is this area of Hawaii the only location that has 90-degree ocean water? A: This is the most unique place to swim in the island because of the 90-degree volcanically heated waters. Many arrive for its health benefits and use them as ‘hot ponds’ while the salt water seems to cleanse the skin and heal aching muscles. This is made possible because of our active volcano that has been flowing into the ocean for nearly 3 decades. While Kapoho and the gates of Shangri’La are about 25 miles from this active flow, because the lava rock is so pores, this creates natural steam vents, and these vents travel that far and heat only this area of Hawaii. For those of you used to the cold temperatures of the Pacific or Atlantic and rarely go swimming, you may find that in Kapoho, once you put on a snorkel, mask and fins, it’s hard to want to get out!
Where are the best beaches? A: Natty’s Caviar Beach is a nice walk from Shangri’La. The only green sand beach in the world is at south point of the big island, and our concierge offers full day tours to this beach for an affordable rate to parties up to 6 to see this remarkable one of a kind beach. White sand beaches are located on the Kona side (Hapuna is most popular), and the favorite Black sand beach is located on the way to the green sand beach from Shangri’La. Also, all of the resort beaches on the Kona side (near Kohala and Waikoloa) all have public access, and the 2 favorites are located at Mauna Kea Resort, and in Waikoloa at the Marriott.
Where is the best place to snorkel? A: If you’re staying in Kapoho, you’re there! You have your own private snorkel lagoons in the gates of Shangri’La, and down the street a short walk is Champagne Pond, where there is public access to swim with big sea turtles when they come in to rest from the tide. Also, just outside the gates of Shangri’La you take the 2nd left turn to Vacationland, and you will find enormous coral to view. The only other place on the island for great snorkeling is Kealakekua (Captain Cooks monument), and The Royal Grounds in Captain Cook. However, because of the warmer water on our side in Kapoho, most people prefer the snorkeling there.
Where and when is the best Farmer’s Market? A: Maku’u Farmers market every Sunday between 8 & 1:00. It’s the biggest one in the entire island, and a few miles outside Pahoa on the 130 going towards Hilo. You’ll get live entertainment, great food, and craft booths. There is also a small farmers market in downtown Pahoa on Sundays if you don’t want to brave the crowds at the big one.
Where can we swim with wild dolphin? A: This is definitely a treat, and if you catch them in the bay at Kahena beach down Hwy 137 (only about 15 minute drive from Shangri’La), you can hike down to the beach and swim with them if you wish to brave the surf. Lot’s of interesting people hang out in Kahena, and they even have mass drumming there on Sundays. This is the absolute best spot to people watch in all the islands! There is also an amazing ecstatic free dance held on Sundays between 10 and 1:00 at the Kahena Inn about a mile from Kahena beach. Drumming usually starts in the afternoon after the ecstatic dance.
Do we need to bring our own Snorkel gear? A: If you would like to, feel free. However, snorkel gear and fins are provided at Shangri’La, as well as reef shoes to protect your feet from sharp lava rocks.
Can we order in food or private massage services? A: Yes. We have a private chef on call that can prepare meals for you at Shangri’La, or our Caretaker can deliver food to you for a nominal fee. We also have a man and a woman massage therapist on call that can come to the property for $85 per hour massage. Any other special requests such as a small luau, private hula dancing or lessons, or a day spa brought to you can be arranged through the Caretaker. No request is too big, so it you can dream it, she can arrange it.
Where are the best restaurants? A: The best restaurants are actually in Pahoa (10 minutes from Shangri’La). There’s Kaleo’s (specialty food with full bar), Paolo’s (authentic Italian), Ning’s Thai Food (closed on Mondays), Laquin’s Mexican (full bar), and a couple of great ones in Hilo… Hilo Bay Café, Coconut Grill, or Café Pesto. Note: for Ning’s and Paolo’s, bring your own wine or beer…they have no bar, and charge a small corking fee.
There is also a small farmers market in downtown Hilo.
