About this property

Charming converted farmhouse with private garden, garage and pool.

A farmhouse which was bought by our family in the early 1960's, reconstructed and fully refurbished as a holiday home for our use, retaining many of the original characteristics: the local granite stone surrounding the large fireplace, a carved oak ceiling in the 1st floor living room, 'alcove' beds (decorative only) in that room, and original oak beams in the large living/dining room. The house is in a rural countryside area which overlooks the river Cavado. beaches at Esposende and Ofir with its many attractions are within a 10 minute drive. A mature and secluded garden surround the house, with swimming pool and adjacent 'eira' (a cemented area originally used for beating corn - this was the miller's house!) is ideal for outdoor meals, with a fixed bbq near the kitchen door. Barbecue, canoes, bicycles are available. The house is for self-catering rental, is fully equipped, and there is a weekly change of linen. Changeover: Saturdays, arrival from 5pm departure 11am.


Arrival and departure times: We ask our guests to arrive at the property no earlier than 5pm on changeover days, and to leave up to 11am on the day of departure. This is to allow sufficient time for a thorough cleaning and change of linen, in line with recommended covid cleaning guidelines . Your cooperation is much appreciated.



Sports facilities: The swimming pool, canoes and bicycles as detailed below are available for guests' enjoyment, but please note that the use of any of these facilities is expressly at your own risk and liability for damage or injury to our property, yourselves and third parties.
Swimming pool: for your own comfort and safety in the pool area, please note that there is no trained lifesaver on hand; running and diving are not permitted; food or drink taken in this area must be served in the provided plastic dishes, 'glasses' and cutlery, with everyone's safety in mind. Please use the cemented area above the pool ('eira') for this purpose if required.
Canoes: these must be handled by adults only and care taken in their removal from and return to storage. Canoes may capsize easily in inexperienced hands, and the use of life jackets (provided) is obligatory.

Information: Detailed information and instruction for use of equipment available in the house, plus suggestions for local amenities, is in a plastic folder, to be found on the dining table. These are written in English, Portuguese and French. Please note that the copper pans in the kitchen, and the alcove beds upstairs are strictly decorative.

Spacious cool farmhouse - great for relaxing family stay
We had a fabulous relaxing stay in this comfortable spacious house - plenty of room for everyone to do their own thing or spend time together. Everything we needed was provided from the welcome pack of basic provisions and huge fruit bowl to plentiful towels for inside and the pool. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and tidy. The gardens were lovely and very lush compared to the heatwave we'd left behind in England and there were plenty of options for sitting in the sun or in the shade throughout the day. We ventured out to the Thursday market at Barcelos and to Esposende and Fao but could have easily spent our days lazing around the pool and garden. Although there were kayaks provided we decide to head round to ProRiver over the other side of the river and hire them so we could all kayak at the same time. The icing on the cake was great views of the blood moon lunar eclipse and Mars from the top balcony - perfect end to a very relaxing holiday.

A spacious farmhouse perfect for relaxing and entertaining
A lovely well equipped farmhouse with interesting garden and a lovely pool. We immediately felt at home and were made to feel very welcome by the generous gift of wine, fruit and essentials. There was plenty of shade in the heat of the day and three patio areas to choose from depending on where the sun was. There were a couple of small shops within walking distance and a large supermarket a short (5 minute) drive away that sold everything you could want. The farmhouse is in easy reach of the main roads for sightseeing further afield. We all had a lovely time and would recommend this place. Thank you

Family home, good for relaxing holiday.
The owner was very helpful answering preliminary queries; the description of the property was detailed and accurate, arrival instructions worked a treat; the kitchen is generously equipped and we appreciated the basic welcome supplies. It certainly has the feel of a well loved family home. We were not very ambitious exploring the area, but did enjoy walks alongside the river, the Chapel and 'beach' at Barca do Lago, lunch at the Golf Club, Ofir, Esposende and San Laurenco, Barcelos on market day. The nearest bar was our reliable supply of bread rolls! We spent quite a lot of time by the pool, which unfortunately does not have a shallow end suitable for very young children. Would be more than happy to recommend this property, with the proviso about the swimming pool.

Grote woning met leuk zwembad. Daarmee zijn de positieve punten benoemd want voor de rest viel het erg tegen. De woning is heel donker en zeker de benedenverdieping is vochtig en klammig. Het sanitair is gedateerd net als de keuken. De koelkast lekt water, een van de gaspitten werkt niet, kastjes beschadigd. Het buitenmeubilair is goedkoop en aangetast. Kortom geen goede prijs kwaliteit verhouding.

Why they chose this property

The property is situated in Barca do Lago, which means "Boat of the Lake". It is a small village where the river Cavado is narrow, and where travellers on the main road from Porto to the North and Spain, crossed the river by ferry, before a bridge was built in Fão. It was also used by pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela from southern Portugal.

What makes this property unique

The house was a miller's house, built using granite and tastefully restored and decorated, using wooden period furniture, but with modern comforts. Walled private and mature garden, a pool and garage, make for a comfortable family holiday.
