A sweet cottage near to great beaches

I have stayed at Ty'n Refail many times. It is a really sweet cottage, oozing character. It is located close to lovely beaches including Lligwy, a large sandy beach, and the pretty cove of Porth Eilian.
It is very cosy - a great place to come back to after a day out, and curl up in front of the log fire with a glass of wine (or hot chocolate for the children!).
The coastal path is close by, which goes right around the island, all 125 miles!
The cottage is very reasonably priced and the owners are great. We have had some fantastic holidays there and now have wonderful memories.
(I have just read the last review which I feel is really unjustified. It is a great cottage for a family holiday - read the other reviews. It is always lovely and warm as there is central heating and a log fire)

Lovely long weekend

What a charming cottage. We arrived on Friday evening and were very pleasantly surprised with the cottage. It looks just like the photos and was very clean. We soon had the woodburner going which warmed up a cold evening. We were staying with our 2 grandsons for the weekend and they had a great time. There was everything you need for a home from home break and what you didnt bring could probably be bought in the shop accross the road. Parking was not a problem as there was plenty accross the road, our car was too big to park beside the cottage. The cottage is ideally situated for sightseeing, the beach and getting around Anglesey. Beaumaris Castle is a must. Although due to the weather we couldnt use the garden but the views from the end were really good. We ate one evening at the Pilot Inn and had a great meal and nice atmosphere. We will definately be booking to go back in the summer. Graeme and Gail were both very helpful when we were making our booking.

Quaint and cosy but in need of some TLC

I have to admit that on arrival at the cottage we felt it looked a little tired and were quite disappointed. The side door is in very poor condition, the inside would really benefit from a lick of paint and the garden looks a little unloved. However, once we'd got our heads (quite literally!) around the height of the tiny doors and low ceilings upstairs, we found it to be very clean and it had everything we needed for our weeks holiday. The back garden was suitably secure to leave our dog to play, the lounge was cosy in the evening and the kitchen was perfectly adequate for our needs. With the bathroom being downstairs, we resorted to using the dining room as a dressing room because it wasn't practical to keep traipsing through the lounge to go upstairs after a shower (and upstairs it was quite diffiicult to stand up straight!) so we found this worked best for us. The shop across the road came in very handy and we loved the fact that the garden got the sun all day and well into the evening and was very private. We got a perfect nights sleep every night as it is blissfully quiet and the bed was very comfortable (if a little short for my 6' 2" husband who had to hang his feet through the bars at the end of the bed!!)

Its in an ideal location with some of the nicest beaches nearby and I can recommend the Pilot Boat Inn and the Trecastell Hotel & Pub on Bull Bay where the food was especially good with lovely staff and an amazing view. Also, the cafe at Church Bay is worth a mention with cream scones to die for!!

So, in summary, I would recommend the cottage as long as your expectations are not too high and for the price we paid we were very satisfied. We do feel though that for very little cost the cottage would benefit from some renovation.

very disappointed,on arrival at cottage. The drive at side of cottage is very small we could not park our ford focus.garden to rear was overgrown and of no use, also holes in hedge wich were a concern for our dog.on entering the cottage early evening it was very cold and damp,we had to phone housekeeper for instructions on how to turn heating on as no instructions were left.we also noticed many damp patches on walls.we holiday alot in cabins and cottages allover country and found it to be well below average.we enjoyed anglesey but left after 2 nights.
Owner's Response: Hi Gillian G,
Thanks for your review and taking the time to give valuable feedback. In response to your review, the cottage is not advertised to have off-road parking, and I'm absolutely certain that you had no problems parking on the street directly opposite the cottage as we do every time we go. There are clear instructions left as to how to work the heating, electric shower, t.v, DVD player etc. I'm sorry you seem to have missed them, but I must say that you are our first guest who has had this problem, as the heating system is pretty standard. It's great that you contacted our housekeeper, who lives it the village a couple minutes walk away, I'm sure she was as polite, pleasant and helpful as always.

With regards the holes in the hedge, the garden also has a ranch-style fence, so we do not advise that dogs are left unattended in the garden for any length of time. We keep an eye on our dog when he's in the garden which, as I'm sure you will have noticed, can be done through the kitchen window. We will ensure that our gardener is keeping the grass well cut. With regard to damp patches and the cottage being damp, this is also the first time that this has been noted by a guest, on the contrary, there have been many comments about the cottage being cosy and warm due to the thick walls which are about one foot thick. We have taken on board your comments however and are making a trip down to the cottage to ensure that our usual high standards are being met. Again, thank you for taking the time to review the cottage as we use these reviews to ensure things are how we think they are and we are happy that you enjoyed beautiful Anglesey.

Very kind regards,
Graeme and Gail

Ty'n Refail is a charming cottage situated in a very pretty village, with the addition of the well stocked local shop just across the road.
The accommodation was warm, comfortable & full of character.
We made full use of the places of interest mentioned on the dining room walls -seeing all of them - plus many more mentioned in the many brochures. In fact, Anglesey has lots more to offer than we realised.
As the weather was exceptional we really explored the island & saw a great deal of it during our weeks stay.
We have to agree with Sarah 70 that the Ship Inn is a must, but the Pilot Boat Inn, just down the road from the cottage serves excellent food also.
Thanks Graeme & Gail, we had a great week.

Visitors to Anglesey are often delighted by the beauty of the island, with its long sandy beaches, little rocky coves and dramatic cliff top footpaths, with the backdrop of the majestic mountains of Snowdonia.

Wonderful for walking, fishing, sailing, golf, windsurfing, boat trips and bird watching. If that sounds too energetic, there are numerous country pubs, serving food.
