Skoorah: cosy but modern well maintained cottage

  • 5 out of 5
Tranquil setting,on the edge of this tiny hamlet of Errogie, surrounded by trees on three sides, with large garden between us and the single track road to Inverness. Skoorah is clean and well cared for, and we were welcomed by the friendly gardener and cleaner, as we were a little early, having wanted to find the cottage before dark. The garden is kept neat, but natural and made a wonderful area to play with our dogs. Morning walks to the loch across the road about a hundred yards up the hill and down through the woods, were peaceful and idyllic. Coming home to light the wood burning stove gave us that wonderful pioneering feel, although the cottage was pleasantly warm even without it. The open plan layout to the living dining and kitchen area made it easy to be together and keep an eye on the dogs, who were generally curled up on the hearth. It was rather lovely being cut off from mobile phone contact. We kept in touch with civilisation occasionally on the wi-fi internet. We had some great trips out to Inverness, shopping in the Victorian Market ( where we found an amazing butcher and bought a haggis to bring home) and surrounding areas, as well as the bustling shopping centre. We enjoyed a meal at Girvans and another at the bar attached to the Royal Hotel. Our favourite eatery was The Dores Inn, where we called for several lunches, after strolling along the beach of Loch Ness and up into the woods. It is always busy, poular with locals and tourists alike. Coffee and a scone at The Waterfall, at Foyers Falls was a treat after the clamber through the woods to see the magnificent view, and the proprietor of shop and café made us very welcome. A long trip out to the West Coast was well worth it when the day was reminiscent of summer and the highlight was a meal at The Applecross Inn where the seafood was to die for, and we just beat the Sunday Lunchtime rush. We enjoyed a huge sandwich and warming Whisky coffee in the Centre after our windswept tour of Culloden.
There is so much to see and do, but we also wanted to relish the peacefulness, so restricted our trips.
We are hoping to be back again in the spring, to see everything in a different season, and bring family with us to enjoy the amazing views and the joys of the highlands ( even the single track roads and the joys of being stuck in a jam with a huge lorry and local bus, were not a problem when so many people are so well-mannered, patient and thoughtful).

Totally loved this place

  • 5 out of 5
We booked this fabulous cottage for 5 days and wished we had booked for longer. There's loads of space, everything's new and clean, so quiet, 2 bathrooms, and Turan and Iain were incredibly helpful and friendly. We did day trips in all directions, to Inverness, Aviemore, Fort WIlliam, Ben Nevis (4 hours up and down - beat that !), and of course Loch Ness which is just round the corner. Great views of the mountains, saw loads of red squirrels. A really magical place. We felt we were in the Alps, not in Scotland, and the weather was fantastic. We also recommend the Dores Inn for lunch or dinner (10 mins back towards Inverness, but book a table). I haven't slept better in years. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Many thanks Tobias. We're delighted you and your family had such a great time at Skoorah. Yes, most people say they wished they had booked for longer, but we're glad you feel it was worth your trip from Germany. I'm not sure we can beat 4 hours up and down Ben Nevis but it is a great day out from Skoorah. We do say it is an ideal touring base and you certainly made the best of its central Highlands location. We hope to welcome you back some day. Many thanks for the great review - Turan and Iain

A perfect Highland hideaway

  • 5 out of 5
My family and I spent a week in May in Skoorah and had the most lovely week. The open living room/kitchen upstairs with its modern kitchen was perfect for the cooks (we take it in turns) not being left out of the fun. We recommend putting some bread on the table on the balcony (outside the kitchen window) and just wait for the carnival of birds that visit. Amazing ! And the corner bath in the en suite bathroom is a real treat. Everything is fresh and clean and lots of space. The 2 WCs and two bathrooms are very handy. We did trips in all directions across the Highlands - it's a perfect touring base. The Dores Inn (back towards Inverness) is a must for lunch, dinner or afternoon tea. Peace and quiet and mountain views, and pretty good value compared to other cottages in the area we looked at. Thanks for a fantastic week. The Dorey family.

Lovely place to stay.

  • 5 out of 5
Loads of space, everything new and clean, nice views and a log burning stove. We had a lovely highland country holiday here - an ideal base for touring over the whole highlands. It was the cheapest 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cottage we could find (we need 2 bathrooms with 2 teenage daughters !) but it is excellent value for the high standard of facilities. The kitchen looks new and is very well equipped and the internet is faster than we have at home ! Comfortable beds, big bedrooms, and a corner bath which is total relaxation. Thanks for a great bargain and making everything so nice. You clearly care about your guests (unlike some cottages we have stayed in).

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review Harry. We're really pleased you and your family had a marvellous holiday and found the newly refurbished Skoorah more than met your expectations. Yes Skoorah is better value than many 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom holiday homes, As a modern detached cottage it has lower maintenance costs than an old cottage and we are able to pass these savings on to holiday makers. Glad you found everything to be of top quality - we do try our best - and we hope to welcome you back sometime. Many thanks - Iain and Turan

We had a fantastic 2 weeks here

  • 5 out of 5
We booked a two week stay at Skoorah. We are from The Netherlands - no hills ! It is beautiful here. We could see mountains and woods from every window. Round the corner is Loch Ness (we did not see the monster !) and we travelled to lots of different places in the Scottish Highlands from here. This cottage is warm, comfortable, everything is new and clean and it is very, very quiet. We cooked a lot ourselves - the kitchen is very well equipped but we recommend The Dores Inn for dinner - it is 10 minutes away by car - lovely food and atmosphere.

Skoorah is in the village of Errogie in the unspoilt, sparsely populated South Loch Ness area with many woodland, mountain and loch side walks starting from the front door. Within a few minutes of Skoorah there are many other lochs, mountains and forests to explore. The wildlife will also amaze you with much to be spotted in the woodland from the windows or decking at Skoorah including dozens of bird species, regular sightings of red and sika deer, pine martens, pheasants, osprey, woodpeckers, red squirrels, bats and at night you are guaranteed to hear the occasional owl. Golden eagles have also been seen and the nearby Loch Ruthven is an impressive bird reserve. Dolphin watching is guaranteed from Chanonry Point on the Black Isle, a 40 minute drive away. Skoorah is an ideal base for touring everything the Highlands have to offer.

Red squirrels and pine martens populate the nearby Farigaig forest which stretches along south Loch Ness, and covers several thousand acres.
