The perfect getaway - brilliant holiday home

  • 5 of 5

We were expecting this house to be a pieceful residence in the natural surrounding of the Loch Ness. I have more than 20 years of experience in travveling all of Europe and staying in holiday homes (private houses rather than hotels) and I have been through both lovely stays and holidays in smelly barracks.

This house is an absolute 5/5 experience. Of course, as this is a countryside family home you should not expect any extravagant luxury, but that is not what a house like this is about, anyways.

Overall the house was VERY clean, apart from some hair in the bed and on the sofa, which however obviously got there using the houses washing machine. I guess in a dog friendly house you can never avoid this. It was no drawback to the general experience whatsoever.

The house itself is spacious with two bedrooms - one located beneath the roof (very cozy) and the other one (a kids bedroom) the ground level of the house. The living room is a rather empty room, which we hardly ever used, as we spent most of our time in the house in the winter garden, which is located directly by the houses entrance. It is a little room with window fronts at three of four walls, allowing you to sit on the sofa, watch TV (a high quality flatscreen TV), and watch the garden and the sea at the same time. It hardly gets any more comfortable and relaxing than this.

Speaking of the garden: This is a very very nice aspect of the house. The only aspects one could consider negative are the rather high hedge arond the garden, which leaves you having to stand up in order to have view on the Loch Ness and (maybe) the fact that most of the garden area is covered in little garden stones / gravel, instead of grass. But that is a matter of taste of course. Starting the morning in this garden with the birds singing and the sea waving... priceless.

If you travel with kids, be aware that there is a bird statue in the garden, containing some rather sharp prongs, which might be a potential danger for kids running and playing in the garden.

It should also be mentioned that the house owners were outstandingly friendy during all conversation in advance to and also after the stay. We did never meet or speak personally, but the e-mail correspondence was very friendly and helpful .

Summing up: This was a holiday to remember and an outstandingly beautiful cottage by the Loch Ness. The ideal holiday home and 5/5 stars.

Owner's Response: Dear Julian and Sabrina, Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and complimentary review and for the 5 out of 5 rating. We're delighted you found The Cottage very clean and were so enchanted by the cottage, the views and the garden. We are sorry you found a few hairs - we have invested in a new extra powerful vacuum cleaner so it doesn't happen again. Thanks for the feedback and the fabulous review. We hope to welcome you again some time. with best wishes - Turan

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Our third stay at the cottage just about sums it up! We never go to the same place twice but the cottage has a pull for us to return that no other has. The peace and tranquillity with stunning views is well worth the long drive up there. As soon as we get to the turning circle our dogs Marley and Kala squeal and howl with excitement they know exactly where they are and as soon as they are out of the car they head for the beach! The cottage itself is very comfortable and well equipped. We love sitting in the conservatory on an evening watching the birds and bats, listening for the owl etc. Its an excellent base to explore the stunning Scottish Highlands and we will return!! Thank you once again Iain and Turan for allowing us and our dogs to return again

Lovely cottage, breathtaking views.

  • 5 of 5

Have just returned from the most relaxing holiday we have ever had! the cottage is so homely with everything you could need ( the wine and biscuits went down well, Thankyou Iain and Turan).

Our little dog loved being able to run down to the beach every morning and we didn't have to worry about putting her lead on.

My husband was able to go out on the Loch with his kayak while I spent lovely walks with the dog.

We drove around the Loch Ness making a few stops along the way which was a lovely day out.

Only disappointing part of the holiday was not seeing Nessie! Oh well maybe next time.

Thankyou again Iain and Turan.

Lovely, cosy, beautiful location beside loch ness.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage for the week-end as part of my birthday celebration and we loved it. We will definately be back for a longer stay next time. Its a lovely cosy cottage in such a beautiful spot. We took our lab Duke and we did lots of walking. It was also great to take the path at the back of the cottage (not next doors path) but the path that runs infront of the cottage to the rear. This path is not marked initially but as you follow it you realize its marked by blue forest markers and you can follow these to Foyers. The Falls of Foyers are amazing and there`s a cafe and shop there too. Its a central spot for lots of walks and attractions so we will be back to explore more. Thank you for letting us stay and enjoy your lovely cottage.

Owner's Response: Dear Sheila and Richard, Thanks so much for the fabulous review. We are delighted you had such a magical time at The Cottage and we look forward to welcoming you back. Yes the walk along Loch Ness to Foyers is rather spectacular, isn't it ? And now there's a choice of cafes in Foyers (a new one with a farm shop down the hill the far side of Foyers, which is lovely) - so there's always a nice reward before you head back. Karen our cleaner said you left the place spotless - so, thank you ! We'd love to see you back again ! best wishes - Turan and Iain

Our second visit

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the cottage for 2 weeks in September 2012 and wondered if our second visit for a week would still feel as magical for us.......and it didnt disappoint! From the minute we arrived the cottage still had that special feeling for us. Marley and Kala our 2 German Shepherds were so happy to be back they certainly remembered where they were. This time we only visited Fort Augustus again and decided to drive to Nairn Beach something we didnt do last time and we loved it so much we went twice. The weather was very kind to us but it wouldnt have mattered we just Love this cottage so much. Thank you once again Iain and Turan for the welcome pack its always much appreciated and also for allowing our 2 dogs to come with us. We will certainly be back!!

A wonderful adventure

  • 4 of 5

Fantastic drive to the cottage via Glen Coe.Passing places and roads with no markings we have never experienced before not having holidayed any further north than loch lomond in previous years but after a couple of days husband was driving like he had always done it.

The location could not have been better and with a child and dogs having access to the private pebble beach and the well fenced in garden was just perfect. We discovered on day 5 that you can see Castle Urquhart floodlit in the evening from the garden.Views were spectacular and local sights were plentiful. We visited the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibit,Fort George(twice),Culloden,Inverness Castle and city,Castle Urquhart,Falls of Foyer. So much to do and see,we bought memberships to Historic Scotland and National Trust while we were there. We spent half our time at the beach and garden and the other half sightseeing.

Wildlife was amazing, pheasants strolling past the back of the cottage, bird table always busy, owls at night, bats feeding at edge of forest and at loch, deer at Loch Tarff nearby, midges came out after a warm day but didnt bother us.Fishing was fun but didnt catch anything this time,we think nessie must have eaten them all.We did see something unexplained in the water mid trip and watched for it the rest of the week, was it nessie?

Boats, lots of boats to watch,we didnt go a loch cruise this time but will next time.We saw an RAF Hercules fly low up the loch, what a sight!

Cottage was welcoming and cosy.Kitchen was not as well equiped as we expected and as we planned to eat in every night it wasn't really a cooks kitchen but we managed very well.I think the cottage must have been due for a pre season fix up as there were some things broken or missing which need replaced,3 of the 4 garden chairs were broken,no barbeque, the clothes airer was so rusted that it fell apart when I tried to open it and some of the kitchen cupboard doors need repaired,it looks like a new kitchen but doors not hung properly and didnt close. The rest of the cottage was very clean and tidy with new carpets, bed linens and towels.I'm sure these little things will all be fixed before we come again.Affter heavy rains a couple of weeks ago some of the steps down to beach had given way but trees were aptly positioned to use as hand rails to hold onto at tricky bits.It just made it more of an adventure going down to the water.

There is not a better location on Loch Ness and our wee family including the dogs had such an adventure.

Owner's Response: Thanks Donna - So glad you, your family and dogs had a wonderful holiday at The Cottage and that you found it clean and cosy. Thanks for bringing a few small repairs or replacements to our attention - we'll get them all sorted straightaway. We're delighted you'd like to come back to The Cottage and you'd get a returning visitors discount when you do. We agree - there's no better location on Loch Ness - especially as so many holiday homes by Loch Ness are on a busy road, whereas The Cottage has just the garden and beach between it and Loch Ness - total privacy and peace and quiet, and uninterrupted views. with thanks - Iain and Turan

The Cottage has its own private beach which is ideal for BBQs and breath-taking sunsets. Within minutes of The Cottage there are other lochs, mountains and forests to explore. The wildlife in the area will also amaze you with many bird species, deer, pine martens, osprey, woodpeckers, red squirrels, bats and at night you are guaranteed to hear the occasional owl. Nearby Loch Ruthven is an impressive bird reserve and dolphins are seen all year at Chanonry Point on the Black Isle (40 mins away).
