Our second visit

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed in the cottage for 2 weeks in September 2012 and wondered if our second visit for a week would still feel as magical for us.......and it didnt disappoint! From the minute we arrived the cottage still had that special feeling for us. Marley and Kala our 2 German Shepherds were so happy to be back they certainly remembered where they were. This time we only visited Fort Augustus again and decided to drive to Nairn Beach something we didnt do last time and we loved it so much we went twice. The weather was very kind to us but it wouldnt have mattered we just Love this cottage so much. Thank you once again Iain and Turan for the welcome pack its always much appreciated and also for allowing our 2 dogs to come with us. We will certainly be back!!

Owner's Response: Dear Jude and Ed,
Thanks so much for the fabulous review and feedback. We were delighted to welcome you back for your second visit and that The Cottage still worked its magic on you all. In 15 years of owning The Cottage we are still not bored of the view ! Our dog loves the beach too.
Very pleased to hear you will be back, but book early. This year the summer (May to September) was fully booked already by January.
best wishes - Turan and Iain .

A wonderful adventure

  • 4 out of 5
Fantastic drive to the cottage via Glen Coe.Passing places and roads with no markings we have never experienced before not having holidayed any further north than loch lomond in previous years but after a couple of days husband was driving like he had always done it.
The location could not have been better and with a child and dogs having access to the private pebble beach and the well fenced in garden was just perfect. We discovered on day 5 that you can see Castle Urquhart floodlit in the evening from the garden.Views were spectacular and local sights were plentiful. We visited the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibit,Fort George(twice),Culloden,Inverness Castle and city,Castle Urquhart,Falls of Foyer. So much to do and see,we bought memberships to Historic Scotland and National Trust while we were there. We spent half our time at the beach and garden and the other half sightseeing.
Wildlife was amazing, pheasants strolling past the back of the cottage, bird table always busy, owls at night, bats feeding at edge of forest and at loch, deer at Loch Tarff nearby, midges came out after a warm day but didnt bother us.Fishing was fun but didnt catch anything this time,we think nessie must have eaten them all.We did see something unexplained in the water mid trip and watched for it the rest of the week, was it nessie?
Boats, lots of boats to watch,we didnt go a loch cruise this time but will next time.We saw an RAF Hercules fly low up the loch, what a sight!
Cottage was welcoming and cosy.Kitchen was not as well equiped as we expected and as we planned to eat in every night it wasn't really a cooks kitchen but we managed very well.I think the cottage must have been due for a pre season fix up as there were some things broken or missing which need replaced,3 of the 4 garden chairs were broken,no barbeque, the clothes airer was so rusted that it fell apart when I tried to open it and some of the kitchen cupboard doors need repaired,it looks like a new kitchen but doors not hung properly and didnt close. The rest of the cottage was very clean and tidy with new carpets, bed linens and towels.I'm sure these little things will all be fixed before we come again.Affter heavy rains a couple of weeks ago some of the steps down to beach had given way but trees were aptly positioned to use as hand rails to hold onto at tricky bits.It just made it more of an adventure going down to the water.
There is not a better location on Loch Ness and our wee family including the dogs had such an adventure.

Owner's Response: Thanks Donna - So glad you, your family and dogs had a wonderful holiday at The Cottage and that you found it clean and cosy. Thanks for bringing a few small repairs or replacements to our attention - we'll get them all sorted straightaway. We're delighted you'd like to come back to The Cottage and you'd get a returning visitors discount when you do. We agree - there's no better location on Loch Ness - especially as so many holiday homes by Loch Ness are on a busy road, whereas The Cottage has just the garden and beach between it and Loch Ness - total privacy and peace and quiet, and uninterrupted views. with thanks - Iain and Turan

Lovely Cottage and Views over loch ness

  • 5 out of 5
Very nice and clean cottage, ideal for a relaxing getaway. There is plenty to do in the surrounding areas. There were plenty of leaflets for different attractions in the area which helped us plan our stay.

There is a good amount of instructions and notices that provide helpful information as well as a landline that accepts incoming calls (we found getting a phone signal was problematic as you would expect)

Just a few tips for anyone thinking of staying:

The paths down to the beaches were very steep and slippery probably due to the recent amount of rain. I could only go about halfway down before starting to slide so I didn't risk it.

Internet is cable only so bring a laptop (tablets, phones etc may not be able to use it)

Bring a torch as the oil heating boiler is outside and occasionally needs resetting as per the instructions provided.

All the above is to be expected from a remote setting and did not detract from our stay. I would recommend the cottage to anyone thinking of staying in the area.

Perfect in every way

  • 5 out of 5
We just returned home from a fantastic week on the banks of Loch Ness. We knew the views were supposed to be good but we weren't prepared for siting in the living room and being able to see up and down Loch Ness. Breath-taking. And from other rooms too. Our kids couldn't stay off the beach - even in February ! They said they felt like film stars having their own beach. The Cottage is clean, comfortable, well-equipped, private and wonderfully warm. We couldn't fault it.

Great family break in idylic cottage

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed for a short three night break from the 12th - 15th Jan (2 adults, 1 child). The cottage was already amazing value for money but we were also given an late booking discount! The flexibility to be able to choose a short break was also excellent - most places demand a week. On arrival, the cottage was spotless and we were greeting by a lovely welcome pack. The setting on the shores of Loch Ness is stunning and the private beach is perfect for bbqs and open fires (but sadly not in January!). Great for a base to explore Loch Ness and the surrounding country and although close to Inverness, feels like a million miles away. I can't fault the customer service from start to finish. We left a camera at the property and Iain and Turan have bent over backwards to ensure its safe return. Overall, the perfect place for a family break in a beautiful cottage. We'll be back!

Perfect location

  • 5 out of 5
What can I say - 'perfect' sums it up nicely. If you want to relax in a quiet location away from the general hurly burly then go no further, book this cottage now. We spent nearly all our time in the conservatory just mesmerised by the amazing view over Loch Ness. A cup of Earl Grey and a view to die for, it just doesn't get any better. The cottage was well equipped and had everything you needed to make your holiday go smoothly. The welcome pack was most welcome and the scrabble was used every night. Make sure you bring some bird seed with you and you will be rewarded by a myriad of birds all scrabbling over the bird table.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the lovely review, Bev. We are delighted you had such a magical time. It is a pretty amazing location and view isn't it. As it is one of the few cottages on Loch Ness right on the waterfront, a long way from the street, with no road or traffic between you and the water - it is especially peaceful. Glad to hear the many different birds performed well for you on the bird table ! We hope to welcome you back again (when you get a discount and a VIP welcome pack !) . Many thanks for booking with cottagesonlochness.com - all our 3 properties are equally magical. - best wishes - Iain and Turan

The Cottage has its own private beach which is ideal for BBQs and breath-taking sunsets. Within minutes of The Cottage there are other lochs, mountains and forests to explore. The wildlife in the area will also amaze you with many bird species, deer, pine martens, osprey, woodpeckers, red squirrels, bats and at night you are guaranteed to hear the occasional owl. Nearby Loch Ruthven is an impressive bird reserve and dolphins are seen all year at Chanonry Point on the Black Isle (40 mins away). The Cottage is an ideal base for touring everything the Highlands have to offer.

Fishing is allowed from either of The Cottage's private beaches. Visitors regularly catch brown trout and occasionally salmon. Sunbathing is also possible on the shingle beach some weeks of the year ! Please note, the steps down to one of the beaches are a little steep and there is a hand rail to help.
