A charming 2 bedroom cottage to sleep 3/4,in peaceful location

A spacious and comfortable 19th century former quarryman's cottage set high in the Northumberland countryside, with open views to the Cheviot Hills. Wanney Cottage is situated on a private road, 250 metres off the A68 that runs through the village of Ridsdale. The cottage is in a peaceful location, offering modern facilities, large garden and private parking.

It is ideally suited for exploring the Northumbria National Park, Kielder Water, Hadrians Wall, the Pennine Way, the Border Reivers Country and the Northumberland Coast as well as day trips to the vibrant Cities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Edinburgh.

Wanney Cottage has been carefully renovated retaining its old charm and offering all modern facilities. It is centrally heated but also has a woodburning stove in the living room for cosy nights in. The sunroom offers great views over open countryside and has a large bedsettee for addiional sleeping space.

We welcome welbehaved dogs and other small pets by prior arrangement.

You enter the cottage through a porch into a well-equipped Kitchen providing an electric oven and four-burner gas hob, washing machine, dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave and many extras for the more ambitious cooks among our guests. There is a utility room containing the combi boiler and space to dry clothes.

The Lounge is a spacious, cosily furnished room, which has a comfortable settee, easy chair and dining table with four chairs. It is heated by radiators and has a wood-burning stove in an open fireplace. We provide a colour TV , DVD and music system.

From the lounge you enter the Sunroom which has a double bed settee and two traditional rocking chairs. It offers wonderful views of the garden, the surrounding countryside and the Cheviot Hills.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The Double Bedroom has a comfortable kingsize bed, dressing table and ample storage space. The second Bedroom has a single bed and storage in a built in wardrobe.

Bed linen and towels are provided. The Bathroom has a bath with shower above, fitted with a thermostatic mixer valve, WC and washbasin. Hot water is constant and (almost instantly) supplied via the combi boiler.

For guests with children we can provide a cot, high chair and stair gate.

Great holiday cottage

This was our first trip to Northumberland and certainly will not be the last. The cottage has the best views of surrounding countryside that I have ever seen, and it was so peaceful and quiet. We did not want to leave!
A fabulous cream tea awaited us on our arrival, which was very welcome after a long drive. Thank you Gaby and Peter :-)
Great base for visiting all the major attractions, our highlights were Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island and Hadrian's Wall. Book this cottage and you won't be disappointed.

Lovely cottage with wonderful views

This was our first visit to this very comfortable cottage which has everything you need. The scones and cream were very welcome after a long journey!
The views from the sunroom were wonderful and we spent some evenings just watching the sunset!
The cottage is in a good location for exploring the Northumberland countryside, Hadrian's wall, general sightseeing and lots of walking. It didn't take long for us to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.
We would recommend the cottage and hope to be back again before too long!

COMFORTABLE COTTAGE WITH FRIENDLY HELPFUL OWNERS

This year was our seventh two-week stay here. The carpets had been recently cleaned, a new comfortable leather sofa replaced the old one and some decorating had recently been done. The beds were extremely comfortable; bed linen and towels were immaculate. Kitchen worktops, large and small kitchen equipment and bathroom were sparklingly clean. The photographs shown were accurate, outside photos obviously taken on a sunny day.

Our other holidays here have been in May, sometimes in cold weather and the heating is more than adequate. “On Twice” gives you something like 0630 to 1000 and 1600 to 2300 but guests can override to “Constant” if they are staying in and it’s cold. All radiators have thermostats so can be individually controlled. Initial basket of logs and bucket of coal are provided free for the wood-burning stove (heater) which we have never used as the central heating is so good.

The cottage is at the end of a row and essential roofing work was being completed at the owner’s house next door. Parking is secure behind a bolted gate.

Toilet rolls, washing up liquid, soap & dishwasher powder, hand-wash and shower gels were provided in abundance, as were scented candles and tea-lights.

There may be some decorating still to be done but the cottage is not described as five star and immaculate with prices to match.

It is a lovely country cottage with welcoming owners who go out of their way to be helpful. On arrival a table set out with freshly baked scones, cream and jam was most thoughtful. Views of the beautiful countryside are outstanding. We look forward to our next stay, booked for 2015.

this property was one of the worst I have ever stayed in. The free wi fi is only possible in one corner of the property as its actually next doors. the sofa is not actually cream coloured anymore as its so grubby as is the carpet. I would advise you not to look under the bed as it hasnt seen a vacuum for a while,and the walls havnt seen a coat of paint in years. The dog friendly garden is not fenced off and leads onto what can only be described as a tip.Yes it has the iron,fridge etc,personally I would rather have a clean property but maybe my standards are too high. I tripped over the carpet twice as it wasnt fastened down properly.I was asked to turn the heating onto twice a day if I went out,as it is not unreasonable for the ...tenant...to help with heating costs. Rubbish,that is not stated and if I wish to leave the heating on then that should be my choice. There are holes filled everywere and not painted over. This property looks nothing like the photographs. The cable tv is actually 3 channels with not much choice. A plus point is we did get left one match to light the fire! An absolutely awful property

Owner's Response: This is the first time in the 8 years of running this holiday cottage that guests did not enjoy their stay. Unfortunately, the persons staying did not approached me about their misgivings other than writing this review.
Internet access is usually not much of a problem unless the hardware used is not up to date. However, internet speed is quite slow due to being in a rural location. We are making a great effort to keep the cottage clean and comfortable. We spend the best part of 4 to 5 hours cleaning the cottage between guests. We apologise if we have missed some dust under the bed. The carpets are professionally cleaned regularly, at least once a year. We have recently completely refurbished the sun room and the living room had been repainted last year. We have rugs in the living room and sun room and had so far no problems of guests tripping over them. We have fasten the corners to the floor now and hope that this has solved the issue. We provide wood, firelighters and matches for the wood burning stove. If there had been no matches we would have, of course, supplied them if we had been told. We do provide satellite television and all free sky channels are available without any problems, unless snow is collecting on the satellite dish in a bad winter. We are proud of what we do offer to our guests but are always open for suggestions to improve the holiday experience for our guests. We aim for providing a friendly, welcoming place, which is clean and enjoyable to stay in. The fact that we have many guests returning is evidence that we must be getting most things right. We particularly wish to thank those guests, who have been returning year after year, some more than 10 times.

Warm, clean and friendly - with beautiful views

A warm welcome and warm scones from Gaby greeted us! Quiet and unspoilt surroundings, but convenient for Hadrian's wall and lots of other local sightseeing and walking. Cottage homely, warm and clean. Thoroughly recommended.

The cottage provides an excellent base to explore Northumberland, the land of the “big sky”. The area is ideal for walking to suit all levels, photography, bird watching and rock climbing. Just step outside of the cottage and head for the hills or forest. Only two miles away are lake fishing facilities at Sweethope Lough.

Close by are the historical market towns of Hexham, Morpeth and Alnwick. The Scottish Borders are within easy reach and a day trip to Edinburgh is also possible.

The famous Gateshead Metro Shopping Centre is a 45 minute drive away, as is the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Visit Hadrian’s Wall, a world heritage site, with many Roman forts and remains along its path, including the Roman Army Museum, Housesteads and Vindolanda.

Take a drive to Kielder Water and Forest. Europe’s largest man made lake offers forest walks, cycling and water sports. Northumberland is also renowned for it’s stunning sandy beaches, sand dunes and castles.
