Idyllic family cottage with garden in South Hams 'chocolate box' village.

Navy House is a family holiday cottage on the edge of the idyllic South Hams village of Kingston, recently voted Calor 'Best Village in West England 2009'. The cottage retains many traditional features including a large inglenook fireplace in the living room, exposed beams and an open fireplace in the dining room. To the front of the cottage is a large garden offering plenty of space for BBQs and alfresco dining and for those days when you want a break from the beach.

The village is picturesque with thatched roofs and traditional architecture. At the heart of the village is a 16th century pub offering an 'Olde World' atmosphere and traditional ales. The cottage is ideally situated for exploring the south coast and Dartmoor. The nearest beaches are Mothecombe, Wonwell Beach, Westcombe and Bigbury. The area offers a wealth of activities from walks, canoing, fishing, sailing, surfing, golf, shopping in Salcombe, Plymouth, Modbury and Kingsbridge, and great restaurants.

Navy House is let to sleep 6 people (although there are 8 beds available, two of which a small junior bunk beds). Upstairs there is one double bedroom, 2 interconnecting twin rooms, and one small room with bunk beds as well as the bathroom. Downstairs is another WC, the kitchen, the dining room and sitting room (both with open fireplaces). There is a large private garden. Bed linen can be provided, but guests need to provide their own towels.

The secluded and little known Westcombe Beaches are a 30 minute walk away, accessible by footpath. In the nearby village of Bigbury-on-Sea there is an 18 hole golf course and the famous Burgh Island Hotel.

Kingston is 20 miles from Plymouth and 10 miles from the A38. The nearest shops are in the village of Modbury, 4 miles away. There is an excellent 16th century pub in Kingston. Dartmoor is very close at hand and there are a variety of wonderful walks along the South Devon cliffs.

Two families with one toddler each could have been the holiday from hell but we had a fabulous time at Navy House...the house boasts a large secure garden with table & chairs for alfresco meals, a very comfortable living room with games, books, DVD player etc..., spacious bedrooms, a fully kitted kitchen etc.. all you need for a very comfortable stay in Devon!

Its location is IDEAL and really made the difference between a good holiday and a great holiday!

Navy House is in an ideal location and great house for a getaway holiday. The village is very nice though would benefit from a shop.The Dolphin Inn was quite expensive to eat there too often. Staff were friendly but landlord seemed to favour the locals. The house was very well equipped and the beds were very comfortable.W all enjoyed our staye

Navy House is a real gem of a place,full of character and very charming - like being in an Enid Blyton book.Local area is stunning -went to Hope Cove on a whim and were wowed by the scenery.

Local beach is great at high tide -often deserted which is rare.
Check out Salcombe if you've never been,quaint but with a real holiday buzz and gorgeous food shops.
Local pub as already reviewed is friendly,full of atmosphere and good food.

Points worth knowing on the house- 2 of the bedrooms are linked (good if you have younger kids).Also you have to go thru one of the bedrooms to get to the bathroom,but there is a downstairs loo.All the beds are comfortable and the bedrooms a good size.
The garden is great for kids and we had much excitement one evening when they discovered a "snake".We think a slow worm but worth pre warning if you're a nervous type.

The house details list Tesco Portsmouth as nearest but there is a Morrisons nearer.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Adventure Seekers, Girls Getaway, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway

My husband and I "found" Navy House 3 years ago and have returned twice a year ever since.
We love the house with the cosy sofas and large inglenook fireplace, it has all you need for a most enjoyable holiday.
The locals are friendly, the walks and scenery in that part of Devon are stunning.
The village pub is close by with good food and very welcoming with a very pleasant atmosphere.
The nearest shop at St Ann's Chapel is very well stocked with everything you need.
In our opinion Navy House is the best place to relax and unwind, we just love it there and would have no hesitation in recommending it.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway

When can we return?! We came from the U.S. and had never visited this part of England before. We were thrilled with Navy House as our base to explore the area. We took walks, we took drives, and we also enjoyed staying put. Navy House was comfortable and in a wonderfully peaceful environment. We do look forward to a return -- hopefully more than once!
