Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Monterchi - Casa Fontemaggio

4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps 8

Fontemaggio is a 17th century stone farmhouse villa or 'Casa Colonica' on a hillside, surrounded by 2 acres of mature landscaped gardens that merge into the sunflowers, vines, olives, pine and cypress trees beyond. There are terraces on all sides, each with its own dining table and breathtaking views of a landscape that seems to have changed little throughout the centuries, including a lake and a Renaissance castle on a hill. Sympathetically restored, the house retains a wealth of terracotta floors and chestnut beams. The 30 ft diameter circular pool, surrounded by fragrant rosemary hedging and lemon trees, benefits from the sun for the entire day. Set amongst mature pines, cypress and olives, it enjoys tranquil views of the Tuscan and Umbrian hills in complete seclusion. The medieval hilltop village of Monterchi, featured in 'The Most Beautiful Villages in Tuscany', is close by. You will find Casa Fontemaggio a blissfully relaxing home from home in which to enjoy the pleasures of Italian life.

The gardens: the gardens and grounds have been professionally landscaped and contain planting typical of Tuscany. Trees include some very old pines and almonds, cypresses, olives, acacias, oaks, figs and lemons in terracotta pots. There are box, lavender and rosemary hedges. The terraces have pergolas covered in vines, wisteria, Chilean bell-flowers and roses climb on the house walls. A wisteria entwined tiled loggia provides a shady retreat and alternative place to dine. The tranquil sound of running water is provided by a fountain.

Situation: although private and peaceful, is not remote. It is well placed to either luxuriate in the excellent cuisine and wines of the region or take trips to the historical and cultural sites of both Tuscany and Umbria. The timeless hill top village of Lippiano, crowned by the castle that can be viewed from Fontemaggio, may be walked to for breakfast or a drink at the friendly bar.

3 km away, the local hilltop walled village of Monterchi, a tiny triangle of medieval perfection, with its intriguing arches and alleyways, is Roman in origin. It is the birthplace of the mother of the famous Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca. His fresco the Madonna del Parto, of UNESCO World Heritage status, can be seen in the old schoolhouse museum. The landscape that appears in Piero's works is clearly recognisable in the views around Fontemaggio.

You will find the local community in Monterchi welcoming and friendly, particularly at the general store run by Marcello and his family. There are bars and good restaurants serving local specialities.

There is a market on Sunday mornings and in the summer there are outdoor classical concerts.

Florence, Siena, Cortona, Arezzo, Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio are all within easy reach.

"beyond my wildest fantasies"

"beyond my wildest fantasies"

Fontemaggio was even more beautiful than both the description and photos and the surrounding countryside was spectacular . The villa offers a magical escape with miles of walks and views as well as being set in an area that is rich in history, art, fabulous food and wine.
We were given a lovely welcome basket on arrival and never stopped feeling overwhelmed by the attention and care with which the villa had been designed and decorated both inside and in the surrounding gardens. The excursions and restaurants in the visitor's booklet were exceptional and we were grateful for and learned to depend on all the recommendations.
Not only would I highly recommend a stay at Fontemaggio to everyone but I would happily return anytime. When I asked a travelling companion if she wanted to contibute to the description she said that "beyond my wildest dreams" pretty well sums it up.

Expectations exceeded!

  • 5 out of 5
Our week at the villa will go down as a truly remarkable visit to a beautiful part of the world in a magical villa. The property was beautifully situated in the Tuscan hillside, ideal for day trips to charming hilltop towns and perfect for long walks in a lovely landscape. The villa was both comfortable yet rustically elegant. Just what we had hoped to find in Tuscany! Whether it was coffee or wine on the terrace, or breakfast on the high patio, the views were serene and beautifully pastoral. Sylvia and Martin were lovely, attentive and gracious hosts. They provided plenty of useful information about day trips, local restaurants and tips about navigating the road and rails. Certainly, one of the trip's highlights was the local chef Sylvia arranged to make a delicious dinner for our group of six. Homemade ravioli, delicious duck, local greens and a homemade fruit tart for dessert made it a wonderful way to ease into our vacation. The villa was everything we possibly could have hoped for. The attention to detail throughout villa certainly captured a feel for all that is Tuscan. Sylvia made us feel welcome and treated us like friends. We have and will recommend Casa Fontemaggio to all our friends. Ciao!

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to welcome Lynn and Bruce and their friends. They were really 'simpatico' to what makes Fontemaggio so special and made full use of what the property and location have to offer. I am delighted they felt their stay was authentically Tuscan. I particularly like the word 'magical' - an adjective many guests have used to describe their stay at Fontemaggio.

fantastic house

  • 5 out of 5
We have just spent the most fantastic week to celebrate my husband's birthday with our family
Such a wonderful position with superb views of the nearby villages
This lovely house was far more superior than the website could express and the pictures don't do it justice.
A brilliant location for easy access to the major cities for sightseeing.
Thank you to Sylvia and her husband for making our stay so comfortable.

Absolutely stunning and tranquil.

  • 5 out of 5
When we walked into the property, it was even better than the pictures. Sylvia was a great friendly helpful host. The tranquil setting of the very big farmhouse was just what our holiday needed. Supermarket very close as well as alot of the towns. You do need your own car and the driving wasn't to bad. Starting in Tuscany was the most favorite part of our holiday and with 8 of us, we all had plenty of room. Nice afternoons and night's by the pool.

Owner's Response: I am delighted that Deb and family found that Fontemaggio provided the dream Tuscan farmhouse they had long planned to rent. I have to say that Deb's was the most emotional response I have experienced on welcoming guests to Fontemaggio - tears of joy!

One enormous tick for my bucket list

  • 5 out of 5
Staying in Tuscany has been a long time dream that finally became real. And what a perfect place for it to happen. After travelling with a friend for 6 weeks we met up with 6 other friends for a week of relaxation, laughter, fabulous food and wine.

Sylvia & Martin are such beautiful people that are willing to help anyway they can to make your stay perfect.

The Farmhouse is just gorgeous, with all the things you need for a great stay. The views are amazing and start from your morning coffee out on the terrace to the evening wine around the pool.

There were so many 'pinch me know' moments as I was amazed with the beauty of my surroundings. We even worked out that the farmhouse has been around longer than white settlement in Australia. Such history and we lived part of it.

Sylvia organised a local guide Ann that spent a couple of days with us, showing us around Florence and other local smaller town gems. We also had Cinzia cook for us one night which was just perfect after a day out coming home to a kitchen full of amazing aromas!

I would highly recommend this villa for the perfect Tuscan experience! I know I can't wait to go back.

Owner's Response: How wonderful that yet again, guests have been won over by the magic of Fontemaggio and all that it has to offer. It is particularly satisfying, when guests who have planned long distance trips well in advance have their dreams fulfilled. I was pleased to be able to arrange the meal prepared at the house by the cooks - guests often say this is the best gastronomic experience of their trip. I know these guests and their friends particularly appreciated the services of Ann, a friend who is a professional tour guide. We look forward to welcoming Karen and Jeanette back!

Owner's Response: I was touched that Ann was so enthusiastic about her stay with her husband and friends at Fontemaggio, that she was moved to write a review while still on holiday in Europe. It was a pleasure to share their endless appreciation of all that makes a stay at Fontemaggio so special.
