Overview

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in St Agnes - Whitewalls Cottage

1 bedroom thatched cottage to sleep 2 adults

This pretty cob and thatch cottage stands at the end of a row and is situated in the very heart of the picturesque conservation village of Mithian. Reputedly one of the oldest villages in Cornwall, it has a cluster of thatched cottages together with a 16th-century inn with Elizabethan courtyard. This idyllic village is just 5 minutes from the A30 and 2 miles from the historic coastal village of St Agnes.

The cottage is Grade II listed as being of historic interest, built in about 1750. It has a private courtyard at the rear with plants and outside seating. The accommodation is on two floors, the bedroom being upstairs and living room, kitchen and shower room downstairs.

Why Mrs Sue Curtis chose St Agnes

We bought the cottage because it's a small piece of Cornish history of which we are the custodians for the tenure of our ownership. We love it's charm and quirkiness; it makes you slow down the pace of your days and thoughts. It's also set in a very dear little village - we love walking from Mithian Downs, over the old railway bridge and descending into the village, seeing the pub and old cottages. It's a delight.

What makes this cottage unique

It's a very relaxing place to stay away from the demands of modern life and we try to keep it that way. The local area is full of beautiful country and coastal walks where you can amble away a morning or a day. The beaches, cliffs and sea are spectacular in both rough wild winter weather and on hot summer days.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We arrived at the cottage on 12/02/11. The cottage was all we expected & more. Cosy, clean, comfortable & really well equipped. Parking outside was great. Where we live, we have to fight for parking every day !

The Miner's Arms was literally 2 minutes walk away & Anouska & her staff were very welcoming, friendly & efficient and the food was superb.

On Valentine's night we went to the Rose in Vale Hotel, approximately 10/15 minutes walk.

Again the food & surroundings were excellent.

St Agnes village, about one & a half miles away, had all the shops needed, more nice pubs & a very good Chinese restaurant.

Mithian village is an ideal base to explore the Atlantic coast & surrounding areas. We especially liked Truro ( lovely shops! Maybe I liked it more than Roger!)

We can't wait for our next visit.

Very Special! Amazing experience!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage lived up to all my expectations and more. We had everything we needed and were very comfortable. The location is beautiful and within easy reach of all the great attractions in Cornwall including The Eden Project and Newquay. Would stay here again on our next trip for sure! Thank you!

charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

this charming cottage in the lovely village Mithian is the perfect way to celebrate your holiday in Cornwall. we stayed here for 2 weeks and visited many gardens and other sites. All were within 1 hour drive from the cottage, some closes than others, which makes the location very central. It is wonderful that you get the opportunity to stay in a real Cornish cottage that is dated 1730s and is so well preserved. It has a well equipped kitchen, but if you do not want to cook yourself, there are plenty of ways to get some diner nearby. Also lots of information is available on villages like Truro, St Agnes and gardens, museums, zoos, you name it, so you can plan your days while staying in the cottage instead of in advance! We will definitely come back to Cornwall and have already decided that we will return to this cottage.

Excellent location and accomodation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at whitewalls last week and it was exactly as advertised. It was very central for travelling and the village and local pub were very friendly. Very comfortable accomodation and great value for money. We were very sorry to leave this idyllic village and would throughly recommend the cottage and location.

A glorious place- like visiting the past

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for 5 nights with my boyfriend in May 2010 and we felt the cottage had been slightly undersold on the pictures- it was more spacious than we were expecting and nice and cool during the hot days. It's very unusual to stay in a cottage of this age and the cottage includes many books on the village which were really appreciated. The cottage also had a lot of leaflets about local attractions in it- so we went straight to the pub with them on arrival for 'planning'! The only thing we didn't like so much was parking where we could find a spot on the road, but it wasn't a big deal.

The pub (100metres away) is very friendly and we ate at the Rose & Vale Country house (walking distance, 5-10mins from the cottage) one night which was very memorable.

The organising and admin of the stay was dealt with very efficiently and it felt more homely than a lot of rental places. This place is highly recommended, it really feels like you are in the wilds of nature.

Mithian, one of the oldest villages in Cornwall, is in a peaceful valley setting, yet only 5 minutes to the A30 road. It is surrounded by delightful countryside with numerous lovely walks. The nearest cove is a 35 minute walk through charming Jericho Valley.

The many and varied stretches of the spectacular coastal path are accessible; from the high cliffs of the North Coast to Lands End and the Lizard, the gentle Roseland Peninsula, and the sailing creeks of Carrick Roads and the Helford Passage.

Nearby St Agnes offers the renowned surfing beaches of Trevaunance Cove and Chapel Porth. There are riding stables in the vicinity and a golf driving range: the golf course on the cliffs at Perranporth is only 5 miles distant.

Truro is just 7 miles with its many shops, restaurants and theatre. The towns and art galleries of St Ives and Penzance are a short drive away as are Falmouth's Maritime Museum and the Eden Project. Many historic houses and gardens are easily accessible.

10 Favourite Places: These are 10 favourite places within about 45 mins drive of the cottage:

(1). The Pandora Inn at Restronguet Passage

(2). A boat trip along the River Fal from Truro to Falmouth and train back to Truro

(3). Walk from Flushing round to Mylor

(4). Trelissick and Gendurgan NT Gardens

(5). Minack Theatre at Porthcurno and Porthcurno Telegraph Museum

(6). Lewinnick Lodge on Pentire Headland for an evening drink and the views

(7). Walk from St Ives to Lelant and get the train back or vice versa

(8). Cycle or walk the Old Tramway from Portreath to Devoran for Cornwall's industrial heritage.

(9). St Michaels's Mount when the tide is right

(10). Walk from the cottage gate, down Jericho Valley to Trevellas Cove then round/over the cliff to Trevaunance Cove,a drink or meal at the Driftwood Spars pub then back again.

St Agnes: Charming little coastal town with a good supply of food shopping, banks, library and Post Office.

There is a craft trail taking in artists' studios and craft shops. The interesting local museum is worth a visit.
