Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday cottage in Northern Scottish Highlands - Woodlands
5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, stunning views - from just over £7 per person per night

Situated at the head of the awesome Glenshiel in the shadow of the five sisters of Kintail, Woodlands is a spacious and extremely comfortable, self-catering, large, holiday cottage. With 21 Munros in its vicinity (the Five Sisters and Saddle being accessed direct from the house!), it is perfect for hillwalkers and ramblers. It is also ideal for families with children. With pool and basketball on offer plus many board games, children love the house and what it has to offer (happy, occupied children = happy parents!). Of course, many adults enjoy these pastimes too. For those wishing to tour by car or by motorbike it is extremely well-located for touring most of the Highlands and Islands. Finally, Woodlands' atmosphere, size and layout is great for large get-togethers.

Woodlands is a fantastic base for climbers, walkers and tourers. Apart from the multitude of Munros in Glenshiel itself, many other mountain ranges are reachable from Woodlands - the Cuillen hills, Knoydart, Glenelg, Torridon, the Ben Nevis range and Glen Affric. In addition, Glencoe is less than two hours away. For those who prefer to not go to such heights, there are countless mid and low level walks. Ramble through forests and isolated glens, wander alongside tumbling burns and cascading waterfalls, stroll along the banks of tranquil mountain lochs, or explore the miles of coastline the North West is famous for - all virtually on the doorstep!

Woodlands is also extremely well-placed for touring the Highlands and Islands. Enjoy the peace and tranquility of Applecross (made famous by Monte Hall's documentary series) accessed via the highest road in Scotland or take a cruise along Loch Ness and visit Urquhart Castle.

Closer to home there is the dramatic Eilean Donan Castle, the glorious Glenelg peninsular, the delightful Plockton or you may fancy going over the sea to Skye. Take a seal trip, sail in a glass-bottomed boat, go boating, pony trekking, mackarel fishing or just relax in the house and enjoy the views.

As mentioned before, children love Woodlands. Apart from pool, table football, basketball and many board games, there is half an acre for them to run around in plus woodland to explore behind the house (please note that small children will need supervising as one third of the garden is steep and a small spring flows down the hillside). When they are finally tired at the end of a hard day's playing, there is a TV, Video and DVD player. Lastly, the 12-seater dining table attracts adults like moths to a flame and the huge lounge is perfect for socialising. Families scattered to the four corners of the earth have reunited under Woodlands' welcoming roof.

THESE ARE THE SOME COMMENTS TAKEN FROM THE VISITORS' BOOK:

*Fabulous house - ideal for 2 families in gorgeous location.

*Thank you. Fantastic. We'll be back hopefully in summer to get some climbing done.

*Quite brilliant new year. The magnificence of the area can only be appreciated by those who have stood in it.

*Great place - love to come again.

*Great house, great weather, great walks, nearly bagged 3 Munros! A good selection of restaurants nearby. Trip to Applecross a bit hair-raising. Snow so deep on top of Sgurr an Airgid dog had to be put in rucksack for final ascent.

*A little piece of heaven in GODS country.

*Had a wonderful time in your lovely house. Enjoyed walking, spotting porpoise, birds and deer. Fabulous.

*Lovely place - bagged a few Munros.

*Not every day one hangs out washing or looks out of the window in such beautiful surroundings. A lovely stay.

*A perfect setting for a 50th birthday.

*Although it rained heavily for the first few days it certainly didn't dampen our time here. Scenery was awesome!!! House was large and comfy. Kitchen was a bit rustic by hey that's the way we like it, well equipped. Kids had a fantastic time and are already nagging us to bring them back. A big thank you.

A place worth coming back to again and again

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 03 April 2013 Date of Stay: March 2013
I first stayed at Woodlands in 2008 with a philosophy reading party that has come back every year since. Everything that 'Captain Philosophy' says about the cottage in his gushing review from 2009 (the earliest one on this site) is still true, and the place keeps getting better in small but useful ways - this time round, for instance, I was pleased to find a coffee grinder in the kitchen.

Paula has always been friendly, helpful, and (where necessary!) understanding. So much so, in fact, that when we arrived at the cottage this Easter, we found that she'd left us a card and a bottle of whisky in honour of 'Captain Philosophy', who died in August - a touching gesture that we greatly appreciated.

In short, if you're a largish group of people who want to spend a week in the Highlands, I can't imagine you'll find anywhere better equipped, better located, better priced, or better managed than Woodlands. I'm very glad we found it.
Owner's Response: I'm so pleased you still enjoy Woodlands after all these years and are carrying on the tradition - long may it continue. I was saddened by the passing of 'Captain Philosophy' and whilst I didn't know if whisky was his 'tipple', it felt right that he should be toasted with it especially in Scotland. I do try to continually improve the house so it is very gratifying that the little 'additions' are welcomed. Thank you for your kind words.

Absolutely lovely stay in a beautiful location

Review Submitted: 03 April 2013 Date of Stay: March 2013
Just come home from the most incredible week in Shiel Bridge. I'd never been to that part of Scotland before, and the scenery was just stunning, with so many really good walks which started either within walking distance of the house, or a short drive away , as well as the Loch right next door, which was great for midnight swimming. The house itself was perfect; really appreciated the Log fire (though was slightly worried we'd left a trail a soot around the house) as well as the massive dining table (we got 15 people around it!) and the unusually large number of showers. Was clean/well-maintained etc etc. Definitely definitely recommend to anyone and everyone- one of the best holidays ever. Seriously!

Christmas at Woodlands

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 30 December 2012 Date of Stay: December 2012
We have just spent Christmas at Woodlands. After a 12 hour journey we arrived at a lovely warm, cozy & comfortable home. The house was perfect for a large family like ours. The children had plenty to keep them occupied with the array of games & films provided. We adults spent our time sitting at the lovely large table in the kitchen, the heart of the home. The living room is very spacious with lovely comfortable furniture & an open fire that just had to be lit.
The house is very welcoming & has everything you would need, Paula has thought of everything.
The views are fantastic, the walks are amazing, we even had snow on one of our walks which certainly added to the beauty of it.
A good measure of success I believe, is the opinion of a teenager, My 19 year old son said it was the best Christmas he can remember and didnt want to leave.
We all had a fantastic time and loved the house.
Thank you Paula for helping to make our Christmas that little bit more special this year, it is one we wont forget.
Owner's Response: Hi Wendy.
I'm so pleased that your Christmas was such a success. It is very important to me that people enjoy Woodlands as much as my family and I do, especially at Christmas where children are involved.
Happy New Year to you all, Paula

Large family holiday

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 05 November 2012 Date of Stay: October 2012
Woodlands is the perfect cottage for the large family...We took 5 small children, 2 teenages and 6 adults. The cottage has all the home comforts you could want for. The kitchen table large enough for us all to eat together, the lounge with so many sofa's we could all relax after a long walk. Plently of room the children never got under our feet. Always lovely and warm and cosy.
The area is quite beautiful, plenty of lovely walks and views to die for!
To sum it up a perfect holiday home.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for finding the time to leave this review. I am really pleased that you had such a good time and I hope that I may hear from you again in the future.
