Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

Stayed as a couple for one week in July 2013. Really enjoyed and highly recommend it. Particular highlights:

- situation: very appealing setting just along the ridge from Callas, in an olive grove but surrounded also by plenty of larger trees; lofty but not vertiginous; very private but not remote;

- village of (and the walk to) Callas: definitely underrated; has everything you need; the 10-minute walk to the boulangerie each morning, along the track and through the woods past the old medieval springs/washing place, was a truly memorable pleasure; La Grupie good for dinner (if you can be tempted not to cook for yourselves in the outdoor kitchen);

- outdoor kitchen: beautiful views over the pool and across the pool to Callas - the sort of view you get back and find you took a photo of 20 times over; had an outdoor kitchen in a Majorcan villa last year and wouldn't now rent a place without

- local produce excellent (esp. the village rose (Bastide du Plan) and goat's cheeses, olive oil, jambons persilles etc.) gave a real sense of being there;

- pool: not huge but very nice and in good condition; the terrace it sits on is a very nice place to be, sheltered and lightly shaded by trees but with views; not one of those barren, sweltering hot pool terraces;

- villa itself – much bigger inside than it looks in the photos; reasonably basic

downstairs but has a kind of rustic charm of its era and everything you need, plus in summer you probably won't spend much time inside anyway; the two main upstairs bedrooms are bright and airy and have lovely views;

- the location: easy drive to Bargemon and beyond to Grand Canyon du Verdon; south only a short drive to Draguignan and the coast/St Maxime beyond

- the families of wild boar that occasionally pass through the garden in the evening! They were utterly endearing.

All in all, a great stay. We would go back.

Fabulous property

  • 5 of 5

La machotte is only a short walk from Callas, an unspoilt traditional French village with some great restaurants, shops and market. Great wine from the Cave too. The house is everything you could possibly want in a traditional rustic French style, warm and welcoming. Great for families. The outdoor kitchen and pool were a big hit. Lovely Bbqs overlooking the pool and Callas. Completely private too so great if you want seclusion. All large bedrooms and plenty of fans if too hot. Great base for the gorge du verdon, the hilltop french towns like Bargemon/ Tour Tour and the beaches at st Raphael and st Maxime. Friendly French caretaker too who kept the pool clean regularly and took the rubbish away. This is a perfect getaway peaceful location for everyone; families and couples alike. You would not regret spending your holidays here. If your kids are older teens Callas is probably a bit to tranquil...

lovely house, great view!

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly as expected and we felt at home instantly. Kitchens and bathrooms not hyper modern but everything you need is there, the outdoorkitchen is a big asset, we spent most of our time there. The house has lovely views, it would be even better if the bushes around the pool would be trimmed a bit more. And, with a bigger group, it is super that there are several terraces/places to be together as well as apart from eachother. Only disadvantage for us (but this was well communicated in advance and thus as expected) is that there is relatively little garden. The footpath to Callas is great, especially to go to the bakery in the morning. Some of the bedrooms were warm to sleep in but we had an especially hot week with hardly any wind, the ventilators were very welcome, without them it would be a lot different also because there are lots of musquitos in this time of year (as there are everywhere).

Clean, comfortable and extremely relaxing.

Arrive, relax, sleep, sunbathe, eat, swim, read, sleep.

Traveling by plane with a 1-year-old is not easy and renting a car at Nice airport isn't as fast or straightforward as it should be so we needed to get to our final destination quickly and thanks to simple and accurate directions Nice airport-La Machotte from the owner we did just that. We were relaxed and in holiday mode right away.

The house is very impressive with plenty of room for big groups (families and/or friends) for sleeping at night and round the pool or outside kitchen area during the days.

We spent a lot of time just hanging out around the house: breakfast on the verandah, sun-bathing by the pool, cooking up French-style in the kitchen and enjoying the peace and quiet of the evenings.

The village is just a 12-minute walk away (20 mins if you're ambling in the hot sun pushing a pram) and has the amenities you might expect: tourist office, cafe, bar & boulangerie plus a very authentically French look and feel and lovely church atop the hill.

If we couldn't find what we wanted in the house or local village shop it was a 15-min drive to a bigger shop (e.g. to find fresh full-fat milk for the baby). We spent a little over an hour in the car on the day we went to find the beach (in Frejus) but when we go next time we might just stay put and enjoy the house the whole time as it's just lovely.

The outside fully functioning kitchen/BBQ area Is great for groups but with a few mosquito bites already we tended to stay in the house where we were delighted to find the full series 1 & 2 of Downton Abbey - having never before seen an episode we became full-on fans. As a British sports fan it was a bit frustrating not being able to see England on TV in Euro 2012 but I used the Internet connection to download podcasts and keep in touch.

I recommend La Machotte to all my friends so it's only fair that I recommend it to you on here too. I just hope you don't want to book it the same week I plan to in 2013!

Perfect holiday villa

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 just spent 2 weeks here at the end of September. The description of the property is accurate, we found it to be equipped with everything we needed to make our stay very comfortable, including furniture for our baby.

The location of La Machotte cannot be beat. There are stunning views of the local town and the surrounding countryside from all the outside areas, which receive sun all day, and it is just so lovely and peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed preparing and eating most of our meals in the fully equipped outdoor kitchen which is nicely shaded until the late afternoon, and swimming in the well-maintained pool. The 10 minute stroll through the woods up into Callas quickly became a fun daily routine, well worth it as the boulangerie in the square makes the most delicious baguettes and pain au chocolat!

The coast is approx. 40 minutes drive away, we visited many of the beaches south of Frejus and found them all to be lovely (particularly Les Issimbres, where there is also a restaurant with a beautiful sea view called Le Cercle). Well worth the drive in the opposite direction is the spectacular Gorges du Verdon, makes a nice day trip.

We enjoyed some very good meals out in local towns, you can't go wrong with any of the owners' suggestions, but our personal favorite was the rustic La Campana in Bargemon. And if you like wine you're also in luck as there are many local wineries to visit, at least 4 good ones are right off the main road down to Le Muy.

We highly recommend a holiday at La Machotte.

This was our second year at the property and we would strongly recommend it. The accomodation is good and accurately described,the view from the summer kitchen is outstanding and the pool is large and very clean. We have booked at least 10 villas in previous years...this has been the best.

Callas is perched on a hill that faces down to the coast 30 kms away.
