Photos and Description of this 7 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Aspet - Spectacular hilltop Chateau

Hilltop Chateau with large pool 50 min from Toulouse, sleeps 16 in 7 bedrooms

An enchanting château in exquisite gardens, with yoga barn and large, secluded, heated pool.

First you come through the gate and see the lawns and the giant cedars of Lebanon, then the Pyrenean peaks on the southern horizon, and then the house, restful on its little plâteau, simple, elegant, perfect, with 18th-century proportions. Welcome to another world: one of art, beauty, serenity, fine museum pieces, and a dash of humour. The housekeeper is a treasure and can cater for you – though your kitchen, big, charming, classical but modern, would be an absolute pleasure to cook in. Salon, library, dining room and the grandest of bedrooms glow with French, English and Chinese antiques and the entire house is a work of art – there are beautiful parquet floors and magnificent plaster ceilings, a grand staircase and oriental designer stencilling. The rooms in the attic are more child-friendly and a perfect place for children to sleep, play or hide.

The gardener cleans the pool in the morning for you (open Apr/May to Oct, depending on weather)

Our Garden: The Chateau boasts magnificent, mature gardens & parkland; nature lovers may explore the grounds discovering hundreds of stunning roses, a sunken herb garden, a white wisteria-clad pergola, an exotic garden, a giant-bamboo walk, a green house & cactus collection, a large pond filled with Koi-Carp & Goldfish with bog garden, stepping stones & many ancient trees in fairytale surroundings.

Our garden is best enjoyed in the Blooming Season and in Summer.

It's easy to spot on the premises humming-bird moths, great white owls, falcons, hawks, dears, colourful butterflies, dragon flies, frogs, hedgehogs, pheasants....

The Chateau's situation on its own hilltop affords uninterrupted, breathtaking views of the valley & the Pyrenees in one of the most beautiful parts of France. The closeness to the Spanish border affords the house long, hot Summers with a gentle breeze from the nearby mountains and snowy Winters enjoying skiing in nearby resorts followed by cozy time by our fireplaces

Facilities include:: Large salt-water swimming pool with sun loungers, umbrellas, inflatable lilos etc. Steam room, bathroom with shower by the pool, table tennis, children swings & hammocks hanging from the mature trees around the Chateau, shaded areas, seating throughout the park and garden, tables and chairs for outdoor eating, huge yoga barn with amazing views of the Chateau and pool, massage tables, Gaudiesque mosaic wall and seating area, BBQ, croquet lawn and set..

Comfy sofas and chairs, 2 dining tables, huge, fully fitted kitchen, Juliette balcony on the first floor, Moroccan boudoir, 6 double bedrooms, 1 family room, 6 bathrooms of which 4 en-suite.

Why Owners chose Aspet

As soon as we saw the Chateau, sitting ever so pretty on its hilltop, we were wooed by its incredible views and stunning situation near the majestic Pyrenees . The area is full of beauty, light and colours and the Chateau and its ancient stone barns are so full of history, quirks, original features and the best old-fashioned workmanship created. It just took our breath away.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The estate is surrounded by ancient stone walls and barns and it's therefore totally private. It has incredible views from absolutely every window and every corner. The garden is beautiful, large and private, filled with flowers, rare plants, a lake, fountains, colonnades, roses and amazing features and it's filled with birds, butterflies and all sorts of wildlife.

The salt water swimming pool is large & heated, the area around it is paved and it's surrounded by barns and a scalloped hedge and colourful mosaics with seating and barbeque areas.

There's a huge yoga barn overlooking the pool and a beautiful mosaic steam room and shower.

Perfection, this Chateau has it all!

We spent a magical 2 weeks in this chateau...no words can describe it - so peaceful, a world of its own..
The views are fantastic, the garden is just unbelievable and so private, the saltwater pool a delight, the local area stunning!
We went to the Sat market in nearby Aspet, visited St Bertrand Des Comminges and Lourdes, went sea bathing in Biarritz and even popped into carcassonne: a fantastic holiday.
The chateau is so comfortable and luxurious and it's obviously a loved and very well looked after home.
We recommend it very highly.
try it for yourself!

The best week ever!

  • 5 out of 5
We have been fortunate enough to rent homes around the world for almost 20 years, and have never stayed anywhere as special as this home. The Chateau is furnished like a palace. The pool and steam room are immaculate. The gardens are like a postcard. The host and hostess are efficient and friendly. The owners were fabulously accommodating. The area is quiet and not full of tourists. We travelled as a party of 6 with kids of all ages including a 2 year old, and it could not have worked out any better. Wonderfully equipped kitchen (we love to cook), lots of fridge space to keep the Champaign cold. Games and ipod docs, lovely views, warm summer nights. Sunflowers, rosemary and wine. We believe life is too short to go back to the same place twice, this is the only exception we have ever found. Thank you for a truly spectacular holiday!

Wonderful residence

Gabriella Lebole

Opulent, comfortable, secluded chateau

  • 5 out of 5
I'm delighted we chose this chateau, and thank the owners for sharing their amazing home with us. We all adored the chateau and hope we can come back some time. The property has a superb atmosphere, we loved all the beautiful furnishings and objects, the rooms are so opulent and comfortable, and the whole place so well equipped. It was a real treat to stay in what is obviously a well-loved home, the personal touch is wonderful. The photo book in the kitchen gives a lovely glimpse into the owners' lives, it made it even more special staying in their house. It is clearly a house full of beauty and joy! The housekeeper was very kind to us and helped us have a very relaxing stay.
We enjoyed the gorgeous heated pool and the hamman very much. The heated pool and steam room were brilliant for when the weather turned from hot to cool, so we could use the pool whatever the weather. The grounds are wonderfully private. We played croquet, petanque, and frisbee on the beautiful lawns (brought our own frisbee), and ping pong and water polo round the pool, and the noodles are the best pool toys ever. We visited the donkeys and fed the beautiful koi (only as instructed by the housekeeper), and marvelled at fireflies in the stunning formal garden. I love that there is so much space to spread out if you want to be alone, and plenty of seating to dine together inside and out (all 14 of us). The spotlights on the trees at night are gorgeous. The kitchen is just fabulous, we gathered there for lazy mornings, and there is masses of equipment - glasses, crockery, pans and knives, plus a big oven and a good dishwasher. The yoga barn is amazing but we had so much else to play with that we did not use it.
I had plans to explore the area but the chateau is so perfect that I didn't want to leave the grounds all week! Others visited some cable cars and Spain. In Aspet, the 3 valleys restaurant served us a superb lunch.
Be aware that you have to walk through the red bedroom to reach one corner bedroom, but they each have a separate door into the bathroom - our party were fine with this, it's a constraint of the original building. Overall the house is amazingly comfortable, with great bathrooms - an impressive feat in an 18th century building.
We filled the house with laughter and made treasured memories. I was very sad to leave! I hope we can return some time, we all agreed it was by far the best chateau we have rented. What a perfect holiday.

Perfect Chateau!

  • 5 out of 5
As the other reviews attest, this chateau is a wonderful place to enjoy a lovely holiday. Our group of 4 couples (with children on the first night - they then went to a sleepover sports camp that week) thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful property last July. We were also fortunate to enjoy perfect weather - it had been very rainy prior to our visit, and got progressively hot during our stay, but generally was just right while we were there.
We ate every meal in the back yard, between the chateau and the pool. A caretaker who lives nearby was willing to fix us a delicious dinner (extra charge of course, but reasonable) one night, but otherwise we enjoyed taking turns cooking, serving and enjoying long lazy summer meals.
The grounds are spacious; the pool is refreshing. You could spend the whole visit lounging in the hammock or a pool chair. Inside is also most enjoyable, although we did not end up spending much time inside the chateau! The bedrooms are all unique, and thoughtfully furnished.
One small comment on the downside is that some of the beds are not as large or as soft as one might like - at least one of the mattresses was quite lumpy, and much of the furniture is antique, so not as comfortable as the modern furniture we are used to (inevitable trade-off between period style and comfort). Also, note that some bedrooms are 'ante-rooms' to other bedrooms (sitting rooms in former times) - which means that some bedrooms' access to a bathroom is through another bedroom (maybe the case for 2 of the bedrooms).
We enjoyed exploring the area, and it was extremely helpful to have the owners' detailed lists and recommendations for restaurants, markets, shops, etc. DO have a GPS, though, as the property was a tad tricky to find, and it's nice to have the extra help getting around the back roads.
You can really tell that the owners have poured their hearts into making this a special home, and we felt quite lucky that they have decided to share this as a home rental. We would definitely like to return to this lovely chateau!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely and in depth review: we are delighted you loved our home so much.
Please note that there's just one bedroom which leads into another, all other rooms have their own direct access: this reflects the original, historic design of the chateau, although we have added many bathrooms to cater to modern needs.
We have checked all beds after your review and we found the mattress in the Empire bed to be a little slanted to one side with a lump in the middle after the busy Summer, so the housekeeper has now turned it over to make it go flat again: all our mattresses were either bought in Harrods in London or hand made to order in France by local artisans using the best materials and are top quality, though they do need to be turned over periodically. We'll make sure that's the case from now on, thank you for letting us know.
Most of the mattresses are a normal UK/EU standard double size, we also have a King size bed in the Gold Room and and huge Super-King size bed in the Blue Room. The single beds are all standard singles.
The furniture reflects the style and history of the house and not all of it is antique: for example our sofas are all modern, though traditional in style; we have 7 different sofas and 2 banquettes, many large armchairs, 2 sets of large, padded dining chairs, 2 large dining tables and further chairs and foot stools in every bedroom to choose from, so there will always be a comfortable seat to be found.
We are delighted your group had such a nice time in our home and enjoyed the housekeeper's home cooking, as well as our large heated pool and we hope you'll come visit us again soon. Thanks again for your helpful thoughts.
