LUXURY SEAFRONT VILLA, STUNNING SEA AND HARBOUR VIEWS,ON UNSPOILT ISLAND OF VIS

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Vis Town - HOSTE HOUSE

Beautiful house with 2 terraces, 2 stylish bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 4-6

A truly luxurious four-storey villa, set back from a quiet, pretty quayside on the charming island of Vis. The island is one of the best kept secrets of Dalmatia, a gem in the middle of the Adriatic sea. This is an old house in the beautiful Venetian-style architecture of Vis, which has been stylishly renovated to a very high standard by its English owners. Fabulous views from our top-floor terrace over the picturesque bay of Vis with its monastery, islets, harbour side yachts and the turquoise Adriatic sea. From the villa's top terrace you can sip your drinks or have a meal watching the sun set over the far side of the bay. Both king-size bedrooms have similar breath-taking views, and there is a further sea-front sunbathing terrace with bougainvillea and wonderful views. You can choose king-size beds or twin beds, and there is also a sofabed for a 5th or 6th person. The house is extremely well furnished and fitted by its english owners, with plenty of everything you could possibly need. The house is very spacious in the bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas. Excellent broadband with wifi throughout. It would suit people who want a completely different holiday, dislike commercialisation, and enjoy really good food and wine. They may also have an interest in history (lots of naval history), sailing, diving (Greek, Roman and 16c/17c/18c wrecks), vineyards, ecology (said to be the only totally organic island in the world) and incredible ice-cream.

The island of Vis is one of the few genuinely unspoilt islands in the Mediterranean - no high-rise hotels or villa parks here - yet it has a sophisticated Dalmatian culture and excellent food. Not surprising then that it was featured on BBC2's recent programme Three Men Go To Venice when Griff Rhys Jones, Dara O Briain and Rory McGrath raved about the charm of the island, and its great wine and food. There are three main villages on the island - Vis 'Town' and Kut are on either side a a fabulous C-shaped bay on the north-eastern coast, while Komiza, a tiny fishing village is on the far west side of the island. The mountainous interior is scenic, well worth visiting. Great beaches near to all the 3 main villages, and a few smaller ones down the east and south coast of the island, near to Stoncica, Milna and Rukavac. There are a few isolated villas down this bleak, rocky coast but the views make this a great place to visit by car or scooter during the day - no shops, but the beach cafes are open for lunch.

About Jan Stewart

We are a semi-retired couple, who found the island of Vis by accident...and realised it was one of the truly magical places in the world! We fell in love with the island and set about buying a ruin and then commissioning a local builder to renovate it. No idea how we managed it, but we did, and now the house is a delight.

Jan Stewart purchased this house in 2004

Why Jan Stewart chose Vis Town

We didn't intend to buy a house, but like many holidaymakers we amused ourselves by asking a local agent to show us what was for sale, and as we walked up the steps of this house we saw the view and we knew we had to move heaven and earth to make it ours.

What makes this house unique

The view - it's glorious!

Wonderful accommodation with peerless view of Vis

  • 5 out of 5
This review relates to a visit in July 2013, although we have visited this house on a number of occasions.

The house is beautiful and, being tucked away on the Kut quayside, in a superb location. It has a 'townhouse' layout, with a well-equipped kitchen on the ground floor, a large bedroom and bathroom on the first and second floors (the first floor also has its own terrace), and a living room and balcony/terrace on the third floor. The views from the balcony are fantastic. Personally I could stay up there all day. Location is ideal for local shops and restaurants, and the communal car park is a five minute walk away. Vis town is an easy walk or even easier bike ride.

The house was immaculately clean and well-maintained. The practicalities are very straightforward indeed and could not be easier. We have been dealing with the owner for years now and sorting things out has always been a pleasure.

I would recommend the house to anyone - and indeed have done. I think the best I can say is that we have been coming to Vis since 2005 and the house is the only place we look to when booking our trips.

A great location with stunning views over the bay

  • 5 out of 5
Vis must be one of the most spectacular islands in Croatia and its capital is located in a gorgeous, horseshoe shaped bay surrounded by high hills. Though it still retains its unspoilt charm and beauty, it is full of life and activity. Kut, where the house is located, is just along the harbour front beyond the main town and it is a gem, full of narrow winding streets, line with charming old houses, but still with its fair share of characterful restaurants and cafes to while away the evening after a hard day on the beach. Indeed, one of the nicest ones is just next door, with excellent food and delightful staff.

The house is right on the waterfront, but in a traffic free zone so very quiet. Though very old, it has been tastefully restored and feels bright and modern inside, with lovely big bedrooms, well appointed bathrooms and all mod cons in the (two!) kitchens. The first floor bedroom where we stayed gave on to a pretty little stone balcony full of flower pots and trailing plants and with a wonderful view of the bay. A great place to chill out with a book or to hang out wet beach gear!

But its crowning glory is the top (fourth) floor living area, with its little kitchen and a balcony with an absolutely stunning view over the bay and the surrounding rooftops. A fantastic place to watch the boats coming and going while you enjoy a leisurely breakfast or a sundowner, especially as its westerly aspect gives you the chance to see some spectacular sunsets. Its actually quite hard to tear yourself away to go out and enjoy the islands other delights.

I would highly recommend this as an excellent place to stay, with just one proviso - that you are fit enough to manage the four flights of stairs!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this lovely review which is also hugely informative for other people. It is a tall house, hence the wonderful views, but there are only three flights of stairs really (if you discount the steps at the front door) and you rarely have to take them all in one go! But it's true that if someone is disabled or fragile then the steps could be a problem and we wouldn't suggest our house. I do hope you will take another trip to Vis some day as we would love to welcome you back.

A bit of paradise

  • 5 out of 5
Hadn't ever been to Vis before, heavenly. Jan Stewart's villa is idyllic, with its harbour location. Vis offers everything you'd want from a sea holiday. We hired bikes, cycled to a nearby beach where the sea sparkled, then a bit braver, we went for scooters and explored the whole island, with its hidden beaches, island history and countryside vineyards. Worth noting stunning meals at the vineyards. Finally, we took a boat trip around Vis and its neighbouring islands. Never at a loss for things to do. Must add that the villa is equipped with everything you would want from home, no chance of roughing it here. You are spoilt! Enjoy it. However, should you be so inclined, cook, wine and dine on the rooftop terrace or if not, perhaps the best restaurant on the island is literally next door, with its recipes passed down through generations. And not forgetting, the beds have wonderful mattresses and pillows, utter luxury. Finally, the local bakery every morning for freshly baked bread, as far as I got to being domestic. Really recommend this holiday. Guaranteed to melt away years of stress. Victoria Jones, BBC TV

Perfect Adriatic escape

  • 5 out of 5
It's not my first visit to this fab island in the Adriatic but this time I found the perfect villa to stay in. This traditional villa fronts the harbour with a view across this beautiful natural harbour. I love the location at the quieter end of the harbour but within easy reach of plenty of the island's best restaurants.
We loved best of all the wonderful rooftop terrace for sitting out enjoying an evening drink as the sun goes down.
The furnishings are very comfortable, tasteful and modern and our stay went without a hitch. There's a great area to bathe a lovely walk away but it's also worth renting a car or scooter to explore this historic island. We crossed the island to discover some truly remote beaches where it's just you, the sun and the clear blue water.
We're definitely considering a return to this villa and this island and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to others.

Luxurious week away

  • 5 out of 5
We had a fantastic week in this house, waking up and being able to jump into the harbour within seconds is fantastic! There were some lovely restaurants nearby serving traditional croatian dishes and seafood. The area was quiet and picturesque, absolutely gorgeous at sunset. We can't wait to come back again!

Owner's Response: It's lovely to hear that guests find the same things to love about our house - yes, we swim in the sea just in front of the house, too - the water is so clear and inviting.

Heavenly villa on a heavenly island

  • 5 out of 5
Arriving by boat in Vis is breathtaking and we were delighted to find such a beautiful and unspoiled island in the Med. The architecture is charming, the locals very welcoming and the majority speak english which was an unexpected bonus.
We were lucky in our choice of villa. In exactly to right spot on the bay a few metres from the harbour wall, a little apart from the centre of the town but within an easy stroll or cycle or, if we were too lazy, there is a bar and two restaurants within a few metres of the house, plus a bakery to buy breakfast. If you feel like a quick swim you can walk out of the front door cross the little paved area and jump in. The water is crystal clear.
The house has been meticulously and tastefully restored to a high standard, the beds are very comfortable. The bedroom on the first floor has it's own private terrace overlooking the bay with stairs leading down to the street. The top floor terrace is a wonderful place to sit with a drink and watch the sunset. The house is well appointed and spotlessly clean. We would go again in an instant!

Perfectly located, this beautiful house is on the waterfront in Kut, a charming hamlet of Venetian-built houses just 20 minutes' walk around the bay from the bustling Vis Town. In front of our house is a small quiet square, adjacent to the tiny quayside in Kut, where small boats moor up at night. From all the main rooms and from the two terraces you have uninterrupted views across the stunning bay of Vis, towards the monastery and the setting sun The Adriatic sea is just a few steps away. Apart from the wonderful Venetian architecture, the other big advantage to being in Kut is that you're just a few minute's walk away from all the good restaurants (most are in Kut) so no scary night-time drives around the hair-pin bends to get back to an isolated villa in a less populated area. And no need to get in a car and drive miles for your bread in the morning. A bakery and small grocery store are just a few minutes' walk away, while a fish market and fruit/veg market are in Vis Town.
