Beautiful farmhouse, lovingly furnished, between Braga and Guimarães

Bedrooms 3
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday apartment in Guimaraes - Quinta da Tapada, Longos

Spacious, luxurious farmhouse apartment with stunning views over the mountains

Beautifully restored stone farmhouse set in the countryside but only 15 minutes drive to the historic towns of Braga and Guimarães.

Approved with flyiing colours by the Portuguese Tourist Board, with Registration No. 10308/AL.

The Roman spa town of Taipas is close by, replete with an abundance of cafés, outdoor swimming pools, parks and spa treatments at the soon to re-opened (after a year of building works!) 19C spa.

The farm makes its own red and white wine and there are fruit trees surrounding the property.

The accommodation consists of the entire ground floor of the farmhouse and is very spacious and tastefully decorated. All mod cons in the kitchen.

The owners with their 3 children live on the first floor and have their own side entrance. They buy in wine, bread and cheese for guests' arrival.

The sitting room was the original stone wine house and its double doors open onto a wisteria covered pergola with table and chairs. Next to this is a barbecue area.

There is Wi-fi if guests want to bring their laptops, ipads etc.

The gardens are extensive and walled in. Guests are welcome to wander through the vines and fruit trees and help themselves to the fruit. We have oranges, kiwis, tangerines and lemons all winter with peaches and plums in the summer months.

Behind the house there are many woodland walks, leading to Sameiro and Bom Jesus, with excellent walks around the Celtic settlement of Citânia de Briteiros only 10 minutes drive away. Alternatively, walk along the Santiago de Compostela trail, some still laid in stone and come back in time for lunch at our local taverna, Bar da Igreja, just next to the house. You'll feel you desserve a good lunch/dinner after all that fresh air.

Food: There are lots of excellent restaurants in the area with a local taverna down the hill from the house, a nearby barbecue chicken take-away and a restaurant 5 minutes from the house that only opens at the weekend.

There are lots of walks around, swimming pools and playgrounds in Taipas ( 5 mins away). The thermal spa in Taipas is being renovated and will open its doors in July 2015, with a new swimming pool and offering luxury spa treatments.

For breathtaking scenery, walking and water sports, Geres national park is 40 mins away.

Perhaps the best part of being here is just sitting outside in the sunshine, hearing the church bells chime every half hour, listening to the birds and in the early morning to the owls hooting, enjoying the view over the mountains and distant villages and going for walks - right from the doorstep.

Portugal has excellent undiscovered wines- the reds from the Douro and the Alentejo are sold in the local supermarkets and are an absolute treat. Oporto, and its port wine lodges, is only 1 hour away - you can either drive there or take the train from Braga, if driving into Oporto doesn't appeal.

Vinho verde (red or white) is very regional. The locals drink the red out of bowls ( 'malgas'). It's supposed to open up the flavour of the wine. If it's not mother's milk it is certainly an acquired taste....

We have a dog, cat, rabbits, birds, a large tank of goldfish and friendly geese - for now (watch this space).

If you want to have a relaxing holiday in a beautiful setting yet near everything in the north - this is a good place to be. The apartment is a real home, with the sounds of nature all around and unbelievably close to Braga, Guimarães and Oporto.

About Virginia Henry Martins

My children tell me to pass on this information: I'm very important, I have red hair, I do translations. I have 3 beautiful children; their names are Freddie, Emma and Olivia.

I've been living in Portugal since 1999. My husband is Portuguese and I was born in N.Ireland, but then moved to England when I was 18. So, now I'm a fine mixture of N.Irish, English and Portuguese - but I love France, S.Africa, Algeria, Scandanavia and South America - basically I love travelling and could spend my life getting to know all the places I haven't been to - hence my interest in receiving people from all over the world to my house (living vicariously).

I like walking, aqua aerobics, cinema, good food and wine, holidays....

I'm now a translator but prefer to be outside walking than inside in front of a computer screen - but noblesse oblige. I speak English, Portuguese, French and Spanish. My husband is a scientist (and a bit of a linguist too!).

I used to be a high flying city lawyer in London - no, to be honest never high flying, and now I live up a mountain in Portugal with my husband, children and a menagerie of pets...all a bit different to my life 25 years ago, but not a bad swap!

Virginia Henry Martins purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Virginia Henry Martins chose Guimaraes

It's well located, has great views, is very peaceful and has endless possibilities.

We restored it from nothing and so if we don't like what we've created it's our own fault!

The view cannot be criticised, looking out over trees and mountains, knowing Braga and Guimarães are so close.

I love hearing the sounds of nature all around - birds, owls, roosters and crickets in the summer.

And the sound of church bells chiming every half hour.

What makes this apartment unique

It's set in beautiful countryside, near two historic towns.

You arrive to a glass of wine and traditional Portuguese tapas. I have a list of places for you to visit and, if you'd like, I can put together a little itinerary for you. We live on the first floor of the house, but our entrance is separate to the guests - we're at the back of the house and guests come in the side.

I have a file with a list of retaurants and their price range, so you'll know where to go and won't be shocked at the price. There is a restaurant near the house, about 5 mins drive away/15 mins by foot - very traditional Portuguese cuisine and very reasonable in price.

Lots going on here - walks, gardens, churches, swimming pools, a spa with a beautiful indoor pool and offering different treatments (massage, facials, Vichy shower etc).

Make as much noise as you like - only one other house is within sight, and we don't hear a thing through the thick walls.

This is a great place to enjoy Portugal from and is also good to just sit back and do nothing.

It's ideal for nature lovers - with walks behind the house.

It's very safe for children - being walled in, with electronic gates.

If you want gastronomic delights at home, Virginia can ask a Portuguese friend to come in and cook you something traditionally Portuguese - you just need to pay the cost of the ingredients.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our second visit.

Quinta da Tapada continues to be a magical place for us. We will be back for the friendships, the walks, the food and wine! Highlights we missed on our last visit: Barcelos market, Valença, Tibães Monastery, Viana do Castelo and the long hike over the hills to Sameiro.

See you next time, here or in Canada!

Above & Beyond

  • 5 of 5

It was the detail in the description and the thought that had gone into providing the extra touches that first attracted me to this property.

When we arrived we continued to be very impressed. There was a welcome pack in the kitchen & Virginia & her family made us feel at home immediately.

The property was very spacious, clean & equipped to the highest standard with good quality items.

Virginia had prepared a comprehensive list of local ameneties & directions to the nearby attractions. The property is ideally placed for visiting several attractive cities(Porto, Braga, Guimaraes) along with beautiful countryside destinations such as the national park at Penedas Geres & the Douro Valley vinyards.

The approach to the property is initially a bit challenging because the road is very steep, but after the first couple of times of driving it you will become more relaxed.

I would not hesitate to recommend this property. It lived up to & exceeded our expectations.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this review - we try our best to make sure our guests feel comfortable and at home. Our aim is not to be too commercial but to make sure everyone has a super holiday. So far so good ! The north of Portugal is all windy roads and pretty mountainous, which adds to its charm but also makes sure the driver doesn't fall asleep ! When we first bought the house in the year 2000 I wondered if my old Honda Civic would make it up the hill - once I'd done it once or twice I actually got to enjoy the drive - it's like a long private avenue and you rarely meet any cars. Most people, when they get here, say it's like paradise on earth and ask me how I can bear to leave the place - it is indeed a very inspiring place to live and I don't intend to ever sell up and move on ! With three young children it's the ideal place for them to grow up. Lovely countryside, surrounded by vines and fruit trees but only 10 minutes from Braga and 20 minutes from Guimarães. We think we've got the ideal location...

superb location in north Portugal

This is a fantastic place to stay. It is well worth the climb up the hill for breathtaking views over the hills and valleys beyond. The garden is gorgeous with orange, lemon and lime trees to name but a few. There are even kiwi fruit growing naturally. The apartment is well equipped and comfortable. Your host Virginia could not be more welcoming and helpful. Lots of interesting places to visit locally so you may want a car as well. I hope to return to do it all again!

Owner's Response: I'm very glad you enjoyed your stay here, and hopefully you will indeed come back. We love the location as it's near Braga and Guimarães, but you really are in the middle of the country. The drive up to the house is at first quite a challenge- but once you've done it once it's really quite enjoyable, driving up country roads that are only used by those who live here. There is lots to see and do in the surrounding area - beautiful historic towns, celtic settlements, beaches, as well as a national park. Braga is known as the Rome of Portugal, so if you like churches, basilicas, monasteries, gardens and walks, you're spoilt for choice! If you simply like to eat out and enjoy good food and wine at a reasonable price, there are a range of good restaurants nearby.... I love living near the town of Caldas das Taipas (5 mins away) as it has swimming pools, a hotel with spa treatments, tennis courts, a lovely old park with swings and slides for the children, a riding school and loads of cafes. What most of my guests enjoy best of all is "coming home, sitting outside with a glass of vinho verde and taking in the view!" Best wishes, Virginia

A tranquil and beautiful farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We spent one week at this Quinta and we love it!! It is a beautiful stone wall farmhouse exactly like in the pictures. We were only 2 couples so each of us can have our own bathroom, which is a good treat as well. Rooms are spaceous and well decorated with a lot of nature light. and the ground is big so you can walk around and we ate fresh plums from the tree which are so juicy and fresh herbs for our BBQ meat and salad.

Even though Virgina and her family were not there, she still has her friend bought in some cheese, meat, bread and vinho verde to welcome us! It was a good treat to start our stay after a bit of challenging drive to the farmhouse. ;) We BBQ most of the nights and eat all our breakfasts and dinners outside on the patio as sunlight lasted almost till 10pm every night and it was really comfortable to be outside and listening to church bell music every 15 min. on the background. And since we were there by ourselves, we felt very free to stay up late outside and chat till stars in the sky.

My husband doesn't drive manual car very well, so it was a bit challenging to drive in this part of Portugal as roads are quite hilly and narrow. and road signs are not 100% clear especially going around towns. But Portugese are very friendly so we got a lot of help along the way. it is great at the end of the day when we drove through the gate of the farmhouse and totally could de-stressed with wine and food and the tranquil surrounding at the quinta.

We enjoy staying out so much, not once we turned on tv ;) but we wish weather was cooler so we could use the fireplace inside the living room!

Thank you Virginia for checking on us via email everyday and made sure we were comfortable in the house and we did. We wish we could stay longer!

Lynn and Wayne

Truly a Place to Remember

  • 5 of 5

The four days we six (three couples) spent here were too short by a long way. The farmhouse has been lovingly renovated and great care has been taken to make it comfortable and welcoming to the (perhaps weary) traveler. Virginia and her family are so charming you feel immediately at home.

Surrounding the house on every side are orchards and grape arbors, trees and shrubs make it so cozy, it's hard to make yourself leave. The beds are very comfortable and the mountain air makes for wonderful sleeping.

Nearby religious retreats, castle/fortresses and world heritage sites made for marvelous day trips...and then you get to come back to Quinta da Tapada to unwind and compare notes on the day's sights and treasures.

We spent five weeks driving around Spain and Portugal, staying in many different towns and villages. This stop was our absolute favorite, and we would love to come back here someday.

Owner's Response: Well, what can I say- many thanks! We do try our best to make sure everyone has a fantastic holiday here. So far so good. My aim is to give guests what I would like to arrive to when I go on holiday with my husband and three children. Renting out the ground floor apartment of our farmhouse is sort of a hobby for me - making sure it looks cosy and inviting, modern but not out of keeping with the look of the house. I always buy in food for guests' arrival so they don't have to go off shopping as soon as they put their bags down. I also send them a list of ideas of what there is to do and see in the area - before they come so they can plan in advance. In fact, I'm full of lists - best restaurants in the area, good food and wine guide etc! It is fantastic to be able to meet people from all over the world, a real delight! Best wishes, Virginia

Five stars that are worth six!

  • 5 of 5

A bucolic setting; a spacious, comfortable, tastefully decorated apartment; immaculately clean rooms; fully equipped kitchen (even with plenty of food to start the week!); a garden full of fresh oranges, lemons, plums, apples, nisperos, etc; a warm welcome from Virginia who will do anything to make you feel at home (and even provide daily nice and crisp vinho verde from their winery). Can’t ask for more! I give five stars because I can’t give it six!

What to do around Santa Cristina de Longos" zusammengestellt.

Es war für uns alle eine wunderschöne Woche!

Herzlichen Dank an Virginia und José für ihre Gastfreundschaft!
